Because this has nothing to do with hacking. Setz, mind moving this thread to, say, General Emulation? I would, but the POWAH I have not.

Since he's asking about why something hasn't been dumped I think it'd be better placed in general emulation.

[edit] That's what you said. I thought you said general gaming >.<

I'm pretty sure at least some data from a few 64DD games has been dumped... Since that F-Zero X editor guy seemed to have a bit of the track data from the 64DD version of it.

It may just be the dumps tend not to circulate much, due to the lack of an emulator that supports them? I don't remember hearing of any N64 emulator that would support DD games...

Isn't it just a CD-ROM? If so, then it'd be very simple to rip. Actually, someone probably already has. Also please note that dumping/ripping games isn't the same thing as distributing games, it seems as if you're question should be "Why hasn't any 64DD game ever been distributed illegally?"

The 64DD uses custom magnetic disks that hold both the game and save data. So, no ripping with commodity hardware is possible.

Eh, well way back when the emulation scene was strictly about emulation (not about "oh look you can get an illegal copy and play it on this fast, kludgey, buggy program!"), people made their own hardware to dump stuff through the serial port on computers.

God bless the early days of NES dumping where that's what you did and when there were still 200 American games that hadn't been dumped yet. (I remember the celebration when Dragon Warrior IV was finally able to be dumped, and the celebration that ensued when NESticle supported it.)

I can't see much use for a 64DD emulator anyways and I doubt there's enough information around about the schematics.

I actually remember pretty well when the rom of Sonic & Knuckles would never have been expected to work with Sonic 2... And then it did. And there was much rejoicing. (That's one of the odd things... the lock-on for Sonic & Knuckles worked fine for Sonic 3, but it needed a special seperate rom to work with Sonic 2.)

There are a few things the 64DD had that the 64 itself didn't... but none of it got very well distributed from what I heard. The fact that it was only released in Japan only hurt things worse...

The 64DD really didn't have a huge library... This is basically it.

It bombed, to put it lightly.

It got remembered though, lots of the games were remade or are being remade on other consoles, and some games were released through the Expansion Pack, which might of been the smaller, compact offspring of the 64DD
