Cara, thanks for the defense, though 2 parts of this hack are challenging (hells run, morphball diagonal bomb jump puzzle before crocomire) the rest IS EASILY solved by the fact that if you are perminently stuck n one room, the answer is IN that room. Shows how much games nowadays hold your hand the whole time.

Cecil99, if you are tired of playing the hack, but want to see it done, Atma did a speedrun and got 2:11....

I thought I should make amends for what I said about the wall jumping earlier.

In deciding to use the keyboard for wall jumping I discovered that it was not only easier than using a game pad, it was easier than it was in the origianl. So sorry about my earlier comment on the wall jumping... i think you did it jsut right.

Oh and I must say in general this hack is amazing. It just can't get broing. It isn't just fun but it's perfect on teh easy to hard scale. Hard enough that I have to do some thinking but not so hard that I just give up.

I know its in Norfair, but not exactly where it is. People say its in east Norfair, but I've been over there, but no grappling hook. Another person saids its in a long tube, but I may have been their, but couldn't get through the tube if thats the one he is talking about. Maybe someone can show me on the map, then I could figure it out myself.

I said the room with the tubes is above the room with acid. It's not the U shaped room, it's much further on.

It's not that this game is confusing, it's just that most people rush ahead. In this game you have to use a combination of logic(hmm, that looks like it Might be a secret passage), visual cues(a block might look out of place, or crumbly, or somthing else), good use of the wave beam to shoot through walls, and just plain patience. It's not a hack you can beat in 2 hours from start to finish. You have to master it first. Most hacks are like 1 or 2 hourse of wasted time. This game was designed to provide hours of entertainment.

I did say there were a couple of exceptions. Hells run as you cal it, was a bit rough.. I think it would have been better to make healing more obvious. (The beetles you can get life off of, simply were not apparent enough I'm afraid.) It was a very interesting way to go about it, I loved the concept greatly, though execution could have been tweaked a little better.

Oh well, I think you did a superb job honestly.. Absolutely brilliant overall. Hells run is forgivable when taking into consideration all else you did here, it really just blows my mind to think anyone pulled something like this hack off.. I honestly very rarely try hacks you see, but I had a good gut feeling about this one, and I'm so glad I did. Thank you, really.

My friend and I have been playing this for the last few hours now -- just like everyone else in the first few pages, we're at a loss about the bombs. It's pretty annoying to go past tons of things you can use bombs on and have no clue where to get the bombs at.

One real bug we've encountered is that if you grab a weapon power-up and your weapon count is less than max, the new max becomes the current count + 5 rather than the old max + 5, which Super Metroid does. So if you have a max of 5 missiles, go get the power up when you have 2 missiles, your new max is 7 instead of 10. I haven't seen this mentioned anywhere else.

It is now, 2:11 (according to the game) to be exact. Check out http://bisqwit.iki.fi/nesvideos/ and find the speedrun video for the SM:R hack.

That's because all the missle power-ups give you only +2 max instead of +5, he hacked that too.

By the way, awesome hack Drewseph, though a little hard. Did you use SMILE?

Drew, is there a specific version of SNES9x that you need to use? I've got both 1.41 and Evil Peer's 1.43 (other versions screw up my controller), and both have the same bug:

When you enter the area 7 blocks down and 8 blocks to the right, measuring from Samus' ship, the graphics are thoroughly glitched and since you've fallen into a hole, there's no way of going back out the door you came in through.

This is with the headered version.

Are you attempting that hell run with 3 energy tanks? Because really, if you have em, its not really hard at all. Have you read all the posts in this thread? You know about the little red flying guys whom you must kill a couple times to refill your health? You know you have to go back into that morph ball room and get the 4th energy tank?

Blah!

This is the most fun and challenging thing Ive done in a while... and now Im stuck.

I just got ice beam, and am currently in red brinstar... I believe Ive tried everything.

-I cant get out through Kraid, because I need power bombs
-I cant get out through Norfair, because Ill die
-I cant get out through the room east of the norfair elevator, because that needs power bombs.
-The room with the super missle that leads to the beginning needs power bombs.
-Icing the rinkas gets me to another place that needs power bombs.
-Climbing out through that room to the west of the beginning of Kraid's area gets me to a place that needs hi-jump.

Ive marked places that Ive tried to get out in green... theres one place I marked with a question mark and arrow thats underwater and seemingly impossible to get too...

Yeah, can someone point me in the right direction?

@Watery Brick
locate the dot which is not filled...
ice a flying creature and use a tube to get there.

the questionmark-way is not of interest right now, because you would need the gravity suite there.

Can someone point me to the 3rd chozo statue in Maridia?? I've found the one to the left of a broken tube after riddley and the one in the lower left corner surrounded by three dots.

Well I didn't know SMILE could do that much, although it confuses me to no end . Some help maybe?

I can tell a lot of work went into this hack. Playing this feels like what playing the original game would have been like if I didn't spoil it for myself by watching 43 billion too many speedruns before seriously playing it.
-
Any tips for this 'hell run' I keep hearing about. Every time I go into Norfair I die of spontaneous combustion. I hear there is a refill of sorts along the way, but this is the farthest I've gotten with looking for it:

Ignore the fact my energy was at zero. I paused with 4 health left.

ORLY?

It's hasn't been updated for years, but it is another SM level editor (and open source)...

Forget my last question. I've found the Maridia 2 statue. With a hint from the qamefaqs.com forums. It was damn well hidden.

@RT-55J:
You're gone too far. The refill spot is at the begining of the third room.
