^------ thank you for the feedback, I appreciate all opinions. Howver I cannot change the walljump, if you have trouble walljumping to high places, then it gets much easier when you get hi jump boots. as for the layout of the entire game, I would then need to go through every room and adjust the level design again, I am not gonna do that.

As for Hells run.... thats not gonna change, kraids reward is allowing you access to norfair, and revealing the pathway to take when you get powerbombs.

and I do not make the player do more than 8 walljumps in a row. 20 would be a nightmare.

...Also, I just want to say that I am finished with this hack, it requires one more release, and that will only fix a single bug where the player can get themselves stuck

The only reason that I would ever cheat is if I beat the game and I just wanted to experiment. If it's so hard for YOU that you end up cheating don't play the game! It's just a waste of your time!

Also this is a quality hack. I probably would've gotten father since my last post but I started to make RPGs xP. Pwned. I'll send you it when I'm done if you like.

Edit: Also I went into my profile and it said RPG Status, what is that about? Does this forum come with an RPG game like few others do? I can't find it if it exists.

Hey Drewseph,
Just finished the game at about 16:15 and 81.7%, and just wanted to let you know what I thought about it.

First off, you're a sadistic bastard.
And I like that.

Anyway, it goes without saying that you obviously poured your heart into this game. Every detail of the game screams a high degree of craftsmanship that is rarely present in the ROM hacking community. This hack, you, and the small team that made it possible demonstrate what breathing new life into old games is all about.

Super Metroid is my favorite game of all time (hand and hand with Tetris Attack), and being able to catch a glimpse of what it was like to play Super Metroid for the first time again was a real treat. I have been playing this game none stop for the past three days and my hands are hurting with joy from playing so much.

Now for the nitty gritty Review.

Like I said, I really enjoyed this hack. I had no idea how enormous a game this was when I downloaded it the other day for the second time or so (previously I just hadn't found time to play the hack). It first became apparent to me how large the game was when I looked back at the length of time and area covered after killing Kraid. In Super Metroid it takes me somewhere around 15 min to accomplish what took me a day to complete. This is clearly the most notable feature of your hack. However, I have mixed feelings concerning this. The world was richly developed, but often times the oversized world hurt the game more than it helped. Finding critical items that could be potentially anywhere in the game with no sense of direction often made me feel frustrated. I simply did not want to reexplore 500 rooms worth of area looking for someting a 1/128000 the size. I didn't want to look on the internet for help, but I eventually broke when I couldn't find that damn third energy tank. Also, much of the map was a onetime indever, making me wonder if the size of the game was really needed. Don't get me wrong though, I still enjoyed exploring the vast world you created.

With a game of this magnitude, I wish there were someway to mark 'location of interest' on the minimap. Perhaps one day I, or someone will make such a patch.

I really liked some of the features this game had to offer. Simply put the level design was top notch. The Shinespark hack was amazing, and the puzzles were too. I really thought the blocks that could only be destroyed be enemies were nifty. Creative use of blocks, such as the grapple blocks to get into overhead doors, made this a joy to play. Cool enemy placment, like the bridge to the bombs were awesome. Tougher enemies made this game more challengeing. Hell's run was hellish and a great use of heat rooms that were used previously as just 'you made a wrong turn' of sorts. And playing areas lower Norfair brought a huge nostalgic grin to my face. I wish I could think of more, but the hack was so immense, I know I forgot a dozen other things I enjoyed.

For all the cool stuff, there is also the ugly. The one problem with this hack that pissed me off so bad that I ruined the chance to play honestly and resorted to save states were the horendous number of terminally fatal situations that the game put me through miles away from a save point. Half of Norfair falls into this category (at first). I could have 8 Energy tanks worth of life and fall into a two foot deep lava pit with no escape. All I could do was curse, and watch for the next minute and a half as Samus melted with NO chance of getting out. That constitutes poor level design. Or I might be going happily on my way when a Elephant sized Sidehopper, with absolutly no warning, plows thru my face, and leaves me with a game over screen. Not cool. These were remedied once I had gotten the Gravity Suit and Space Jump, but as you know, that doesn't happen until 2/3's thru the game. Also, half of the Shinespark puzzles were far far far too hard (though many, like the alternate Spazer approach were challenging and fun).

Also, I can not agree with you limiting Samus' movement so much. I understand this is an integral part of the game, and I am not asking you to change it, but part of Super Metroid's genius was the versitiliy of Samus' movement. For instance, Limiting the number of bombs you can drop in any given time. At first I thought this was resonable for the sake of preventing sequence breaking, but when I found that you could still infinite bomb jump, I was left bewildered at this choice. Compounded with the fact that you placed restrictons on when and where Samus could only assume the Morph ball left me feeling a little upset (especially in situations like the ultra difficult to get Power Bombs in Norfair in the room with a Morph Ball maze on the ceiling and lava flooding the entire bottom) The restriction of Wall Jumping on rough surfaces also left me miffed when sometimes a tile was used to denote 'rough' in one area, and 'smooth' in another (i.e. Red Brinstar at the top of the room with lots of spines and the room with third energy tank next to it.)

My last gripe was the location of the third energy tank. Without it, Hell's run is impossible, and since there is no indication that Hell's run is the next step in the game or that I was missing this energy tank, I thought I had gotten stuck in Brinstar somehow. The requirement that you locate this third energy tank is against the non-linearity of Metroid. I stongly suggest that at the very least in your next revision of the game move the Energy tank to the room after Kraid as a reward, or give the player more options on locating another Energy Tank to get the job done.

All else aside, this is easily the best hack of a video game I have ever come across.

Well done sir.

Glitches and Traps:
----------------------------
1)You can get trapped in the lower half of the shaft leading up to the Spazer if you shinespark in the room directly under the Spazer and run over the Speed Booster block on the floor.
2)You can get trapped as a ball on top of the head of the Chozo Guardian in East Norfair (not the one in the lava)
3)Maridia's map in the pause screen wraps by one room if you scroll all the way to the left.
4)The Squeepts above the West Norfair Chozo Guadian make freezing noises when attacked with a Spazer.
5)In the room with the Speed Booster, once the rising lava has reached its peak, the surface of the lava overflows/underflows as a result of the tide. This results in moments of vanishing lava.
6)I know I saw a few more bugs, but nothing comes to mind right now.

Forgive me for asking, but as both a hacker and a cartographer, I couldn't help but notice that SMILE does not render your game (all security measures aside). I was wondering if you had modified the header of the room data in your hack, or maybe added some extra security measures to prevent prying eyes from looking at your baby with such a tool. It's stange beacuse everything seems to be intact except the actual tile map of the room and background.

in maridia, on the way through the bottom section, after the mapstation, but before the western tube, you use space jump to get back to the north east.....

There is a room very close to there where, if I remember right, there are a few water zoomers. There are two platforms in the room that you would have previously jumped over and never messed with. Here, you need to tuck and roll under both for a jump puzzle. Hip hip hurrah.
