the specific obsticles I made easier is a lowered ledge on craterias surface that doesn't require a 1wj or a crouch jump, and most importantly the double diagonal bombjumping badness in norfair before crocomire

also, that tube doesn't break until you beat ridley

Damn. Getting that one energy tank by shinesparking in Crateria is next to impossible. I'm sorry if I sound harsh but its freakin hard gettin the shinespark to hold over especially when you have such a short chance to pull off the recharge.

Seriously, Drewseph, modify the text on your site so it reflects the changes that you made to the hack yesterday. v1.7 or v1.61; at least make it so that people know there's a different version.

Not that i didn't enjoy the Lost Caverns but i atleast knew what to do with the double diagonal bomb jumping compared to caliber of difficulty in the Lost Cavers where i don't see how anyone could figure out the "code" without an explanation. After i got the Hang of the diagnol bomb jumping it was quite easy.

Hiya, Drewseph. I just signed up to lavish some praise on you and your team, hehe. What you've created here is far beyond being a simple custom map (the like of which you'd see in some arena-based FPS); it actually achieves something that should delight any long-standing fan of the series, and something that even the more recent games in the series have been less successful in doing - it gently prods you into unravelling the world for yourself at your own pace, and in doing so evokes the true spirit of the first 3 games.

You've expressed some anger at the people who are cheating or who are unwilling to just get stuck into it by themselves, but without wanting to sound elitist, I tend to see that as a sign that you're doing something right. You've made a sort of unofficial semi-sequel (certainly in terms of the quality) that's aimed very directly at serious Metroid fans who wish they could play SM for the first time again, and who are fed up of the concessions made in the newer titles, like the excessive heavy-handedness of the storytelling (i.e.: via countless cutscenes), the lack of focus in the musical and atmospheric direction, and the general level of hand-holding (or just the easyness of the newer maps due to their tendency to be self-contained and smaller).

At first, I was rather displeased that you'd chosen to foist your own physics preferences on us (I personally love the fact that Samus' falling speed and terminal velocity is very low, and have grown to expect it as a quality of her suit... another thing the Prime games failed to interpret was Samus' agility - her suit is now heavy and clunky), but after playing the game for a while, it actually feels fairly streamlined, and I'd say your take on the wall jumping approaches improvement! I find that the heightened inertia makes it easier to pull off, as the immediacy of it is making me react more quickly and do it more consistently. It's also much more fun, seeing Samus blaze back up massive chasms in 2 seconds flat. Single-wall jumping is much more difficult, though. The jumping in general isn't too short or quick like in MZM, the suit doesn't feel too heavy, and overall your physics heighten the sense of this game being a brand new, alien experience.

The level design generally induces the same kinds of thought processes that the original game does, and gets the old Metroid-intuition juices flowing. I also find I'm nudged away from my goal quite often. Well, not in any tangible sense, but there's always enough places to explore that I'll forget to come back to a certain room and check the walls - stuff like that. I'm absolutely loving it. A lot of hacks tend to over-egg the pudding, but apart from the steel piping in Crateria, your design feels quite careful and reflective of SM's style. One thing a lot of hacks fail to capture is the aforementioned 'prodding' of the player into finding their way around and finding the items they need to progress, but yours does it in almost the same ways that the official game does it. Very cleverly and unintrusively, in case I sound too vague.

So, yeah, fantastic work! This deserves the eternal kudos and respect of any Metroid fan. If only all hacks were done with this level of understanding for the subject matter!

Keep it Gradius,

-Mike.

Embarrassing truth which I feel compelled to mention:

I forgot that you could run without special boots in Super Metroid.

(Hey, it's been over a decade!)

Consequently, I found the escape from Ceres space station to be quite a challenge. On my fifth attempt, I finally got out of there with 0'00"14 remaining. I suppose a truly perfect run (er, walk) could get it done with a fuill second left, but that was quite difficult and left me wondering how hard the rest of the hack would be.

Fortunately I remembered about dashing when exploring Crateria!

This is so embarrasing, but I'm having really early trouble getting anywhere. I have the ball and the missles, but that's it. Here's my total progress:

I've tried shooting everywhere that looks like it might be a hole to no avail. My only path appears to me a jump that I've been trying to make for two days:

Should I be able to make that jump, or am I looking in the wrong place?

I'm not sure if this has been covered, but there are two grey doors in Crateria that I cannot figure out how to open. I have found all twelve of the guardians( by the way, the Norfair sector 1 was very well hidden, good job) and cannot understand why they haven't opened yet. One is in room with Samus's ship and the other is just a screen or two below there. Is there a hidden entrance I'm missing because I've X-rayed just about everywhere.

Oh man. This hack is awesome. I'm currently running around after getting the space jump in Maridia searching for missile - super missile - power bomb - and energy tank powerups.

Complete list of powerups I've collected so far in order:

morph ball
wall jump boots
bombs
super missiles
ice beam
varia
power bombs
grapple beam
speed booster
xray scope
high jump boots
gravity suit
space jump

I'm looking forward to seeing the new level layout in Ridley's hideout and Tourain. Great hack Drew.

After all i've gotten through i think i'm finally to an area that i just can't handle. I'm stuck in the second room of Tourian with the grey door to the far left and with regenerating metroids i just don't know how to get it to open. (I've searched the entire room and it's the only exit besides the bottom one that leads me back to water crateria) If it's killing alot of metroids then i suppose i'm just not good enough, i could hardly scroll through my items fast enough to access the bottom exit of the room the first time.

Anyways, i just wanted to extend another sincere thanks to Drewseph for one of the best single player experiences i've had in my life. I couldn't imagine going back and playing the original super metroid after playing a game of this caliber.

You cannot access those rooms (and the one behind the Torizo room) until the escape sequence. I suggest that you just forget about them.
