It was an unpopular war and you didn't want to be flown over to beautiful Laos to become known as a baby killer when you got back. The stigmas attached to veterans following the war (by the anti-war lobby for being involved in a reprehensible war and by the war supporters for them losing the war) were seen before the conflict ended. Soldiers didn't want to come back to an America that wouldn't forgive them.
