Google has recently released a basic HTML page creator, much like what Geocities and other freehosting sites offer. If you have a Gmail account, you automatically can get this. I tested it out this afternoon and I wasn't very impressed. You can't seem to take advantage of the Webspacefor your own custom Websites (like what one might put together in Notepad or some other text editor) and their system is pretty iffy. It makes... semi nice layouts, but it's horrible to try and customize or edit. You're pretty much very locked into the original layout. I got "malformed request" pages when I tried to "Change Look", and at least five times when I was trying to publish, it claimed I wasn't connected to the Internet, when ... well I was. =\ This isn't going to be revolutionary as far as I can tell, if anything, it's only mildly better than some other free page creator atrocities. Could be worse, but it could be A LOT BETTER.

In short, DO NOT WANT. Thanks.

Well, it's a beta, so you have to expect bugs, and the closer you are to the announcement date (really close right now) the more bugs you're going to run into.

I don't tend to like these kinds of things myself, but I can see their usefulness for some people. This kind of thing allows the non-technical to create a webpage. I'm fine with that.

I hope that Google improve theirs so that it's one of the easier ones around. Even easy web page creators seem to confuse end-users, so I hope they put a lot of effort into their usability.

I'm starting to wonder if it's better off even for the non-technical to learn some basic HTML, afterall, most of these pre-fab type things put out websitest that just aren't very nice looking most of the time. =(

Eh, what to say. I was bored, while I don't like the idea of... page creators like this, this is a good page creator and the pages it creates looks rather good, if just little impersonal.

I work on a Help Desk and I deal with the non-technical on a full-time basis. Unfortunately, I'd say that there are a vast majority of the non-technical that would not be able to even begin to get their heads around it.

If they want to learn, sure, but most don't want to / aren't able to, and that's why I tend to accept these site builder things and other general WYSIWYG tools.

It's Google and it's a product that's in beta. Therefore, it's guaranteed to improve by some margin at the least. :\

I understand some HTML but only because I made the effort to when I was in high school... a bunch of people taking basic classes in university are absolutely clueless about the subject.

See the previous messages, that kind of defeats the entire purpose. Page Creators are meant for people who don't have HTML knowledge:

See?

It's not meant for people who have experience with HTML. =p The only thing I hate about page creators like this is the way they can be so limiting. I wouldn't mind a page creator if it didn't force you into certain setups.

But is it possible to create something this simple without limitations??

I'm not sure if it's possible to offer both creative freedom and extreme ease of use. There has to be some kind of middle ground and generally it errs on the side of basic usability and not creativity.

Sad situation, but maybe as the population grows into the age of the "information super highway" this may not remain such an issue.

It is a bit on the easy side, not enough power options, etc...
At least it's easy to create simple little pages that aren't too awful looking.

Here's hoping that it will improve quite a bit.
