I voted Wii for one reason: It's different.
I honestly believed Nintendo would go for another abreviation, like DS, PS3, PSP, etc. something like RS, for Revolution System
Besides, it's not like Wii doesn't have a meaning, even if it is a little strange

There is a 1up.com article about the name has it being quite looked down upon by the Japanese industry insiders. An odd turn, to say the least. The article is here and is okay, I guess. I mean, this people are far more qualified to speak on general market trends than a bunch of gaming enthusiasts that are out of touch with the reality of the GENERAL public.

Ultimately I've thrown my cards in for the oncoming systems and if I'm going to buy one it is going to be the Wii. If only because I don't really play that many online games anymore and I just want something I can pick up and play and have some quick fun with. Like Smash Bros. or if Halo 3 knocks my socks off perhaps the 360 will come to me. I'm a little unsure right now, but for the simple fact of economics (and the fact that I just pre-ordered a DS Lite) I'm leaning towards getting the Wii.

Remember, I was underwhelmed with the Gamecube this generation when compared to my chosen system, the X-Box. Thus far I've not been happy with Microsoft's strategy. Nintendo's has been so weird and bouncy (and the fact that it is easy to make fun of) that I adore them right now. Sony, as always, has been underwhelming me with their gross arrogance.

My, how clever of you! Yes, that certainly was a clever play on words. I'm sure your mother constantly tells you how cool and witty you are.

You know, it is stupid to refuse to buy something because of its name, but... this is a poll about which name you prefer. Granted, it could use a "who cares?" option, but all these posts saying the name doesn't affect the quality of the games don't really have any place in this thread.

Iīve never complained about it as a console as I doubt itīll be bad at all. I just donīt think the name fits.

As for my other opinions, you can see them in my eraly replies in this thread.

I go with Trapster's opinion on this. Wii just doesn't fit!

Revolution sounds MUCH better. And it's harder to make improper jokes with it.

Revolution sounds a bit better to me, but... Wii is definitely more unique. Wouldn't make much difference, either way, though...

Just wait it out a few months or a year or so. Then you won't even give a shit what it's called. Hell I was kinda dry on the name at first, but here I am saying (as in verbally spoken in real life) "Wii" quite freely with no problem, and that wasn't something I'd expect.

Don't get me wrong, I make "Wii"-like immature jokes all the time, but I'm still good with the name, and like how people thought names like DS, XBOX, or even sticking "64" at the end of freaking every game name was completely stupid...well here we are with the "stupidity" again, although maybe it's a little harder to accept since apparently "Wii" is not quite so culturally dandy to us, or perhaps end up with overdone immature jokes taken too far.

So the Japanese don't like the name either, that's fair dinkum. I guess there are a lot of things in life where we don't particularly like (or understand) the names, however I understand this wasn't your point and this is just a standalone comment .

Anyhow yeah, with HyperMackerel on this, going on to say the name is going to affect quality of games is a little too far.

That's it for the name-related stuff. As for the system itself, this is one of the rare times I actually plan to buy a system when it's still fresh (and not a year or two after). I even convinced my friend to get this (he absolutely hates the name, btw ) over a 360 (I didn't even intend to xD), but one of us needs to get a 360 anyway because I'm suddenly interested in what Halo 3 would be like .

Rentals ftw!

For the record, I didn't think DS, Xbox or *64 were stupid names.

I think Project Reality sounded cooler than N64, since that would be the relevant comparison in this case. (Nitro sounds slightly more amusing than DS, too.)

I didn't think they were either, although DS was a little iffy for a bit, like Wii..but soon got over them. I didn't think they were "stupid" as such, just a little weird to start off with .

What about Project Dolphin and the GameCube.. I found it kinda amusing (but nice) how the SDK installation has a page about saving the dolphins along with a photo.

Didn't N64 have an Ultra64 name for a while too?

Yeah, it's codename was the Nintendo Ultra 64. I think I have an old Nintendo promo tape where they call it that.

Actually, Ultra 64 was supposed to be the name of the console, but Nintendo changed it for some reason.
The codename was Project Reality.
