I wanted to make some money selling old things I never use anymore. Figured I'd look on eBay to see what kinds of prices I can get. The prices things are going for there are ridiculous! Sega Genesis games for 50 cents, an MP3 player (that cost 100 bucks brand new) for 2 bucks, a working Intellivision system with 30 games for 20? That's great if I want these things but how do you make any money selling things at these prices?

People bid on them, and the prices go up.

Duh.

...Yeah. What he said.

If you have it at the normal price to begin with, nobody is going to bid. If you keep it really low, lots of people will bid, and it will go up quickly.

Your ultimate goal is to sell it, so attracting bidders is important.

Basically, the more valuable or rare, the cheaper. That way more people will want THAT one. BUT, you must take the chance of only a few people or just one person wanting it, then you're screwed, but that's less likely to happen.

Another way you could coax buyers is to set the ending time sooner than others, [but still reasonable.] so people will "panic" when they see it, and bid. But that's not AS good to do.

DON'T set the buy it now price too low, and make the shipping cost reasonable. Just think of what YOU might look for as a buyer. Allow expedited shipping. Etc.

If someone set a good item low for the buy it now price, THAT'S crazy [for them ].

Another rather important thing to note is how much shipping on an item is.

See, you have to pay eBay twice: when you list an item, and when you sell it (if you don't sell it, I think you get the listing money back, or something), and both the starting price and the ending price affect how much you have to pay eBay.

However, shipping isn't included in that. So you can sell something for $.01 and charge someone $20 for shipping that really only costs you $5, and you don't have to pay eBay as much for the item.

However, many people stray away from items with high shipping costs, so you shouldn't do that with a particularly good item or else it may sell low and you won't make a profit.

Well, you need to take a middle course of action, of course. Still, I would imagine that most people have a set price they're willing to pay for an item, say, $20, and bid accordingly. That is, if the shipping is $10, they won't bid higher than $10, and if the shipping is $5, they'll bid up to $15...and if the shipping is $19.99 then they'll bid on a $.01 item.

At least, that's what I do, and I think it's reasonable...

No, I mean even the current bid and Buy it Now prices are really low on almost all of them (and the ones that are high don't have any bids ).

The other thing to note is that on most auctions, the price goes up a lot towards the end, in the last couple minutes, often in the last 10 seconds, particularly as more people use "sniping" services...

In order to see the prices items are actually going for you have to look at auctions that are actually finished...

Trust me, you're just not looking at the right things. Final Fantasy 7 usually sells for around $38, usually more. And Beanie Babies usually sell for around $200, despite actually only being worth around $20-$30! The collectors are crazy.

I really can't imagine FF7 being sold for $38 unless it's completely new, as it sells for only a fraction of that price at GameStop and the like.

As for the beanie babies, that's only the really rare ones that sell for that much. Then again, seeing as they "retire" them often, that makes a lot of them really rare

I wonder why they do that, though. The companies don't stand to make a profit based on what goes on in the secondary market... Unless they make a reputation on it and cause people to buy them in mass quantities in expectation of them being retired?

Yup, that's pretty much exactly why they do it. Some kids probably still collect Beanie Babies, but at this point it's become very much a collector's market, as well as those who want to profit by selling *to* collectors. So TY makes them artificially rare to drive up demand that way.

I don't trust eBay as much as I used too... had a friend of mine -- her name was Alice. She's a student I know at Scott Community College -- who used to perform an auction on eBay, and her account was hacked.

Story is that she had lots of furiture, garden tools, stuff you'd normally have around the home to sell on eBay, and when her account was hacked. After she found out the next day, her credit account bankrupted after an `02 truck was sold. She was apparently screwed since she didn't perform that auction and never sold a truck since she never OWNED a truck. She called up the company in various states before she finally managed to contact the head honcho in charge of eBay sales and stuff, and was able to straighten out this whole thing out in after two months.

She got the money back that she had apparently lost, but the guy who hacked her account was never caught (cause the guy never lived in the US). So, she got the account changed, password changed, and guess what... she was hacked yet again. She went through the whole BS once more, then after she was able to get this crap straightened out once more, she sent them a letter, told them "Screw you, I'm cancling my account."

But... as for the original topic; certian things sold on eBay have different prices. I mean, I've seen those Beenie Babies auctions, and one time, I've seen this auction where someone in California paid over $500 just to have the mallard duck Beenie Baby. Talk about spending cash... Though I must agree with Skydude, FF7 being sold for $38? I doubt it... unless they want to be as cheap as humanly possible.

The trick is to have a secure password. At least 8 characters, and making use of numbers, letters, and symbols helps. And not having it be the same thing there as anywhere else.

I really seem to recall FF7 being much, much cheaper. I imagine the demand went up a lot recently due to the hype about Advent Children, leading to a big price increase.
