Most of the CPS-2 games in MAME have the same characters every single time, with little change. In fact, most of the changes are in the game as a whole and not in the characters themselves. The way I see it, the characters are each stored in a seperate package, changed only marginally to fit the game in question. The only things that are unique from game to game are their portraits and endings!

What I'd like to know is how the characters are stored, and how feasible it is to transplant them from one game to another. I always thought that having Morrigan in MVSC as the only Darkstalker was kinda lame, and have been pondering the possibility of replacing another character with Felicia.
Some basic information on the Capcom Play System II

CPU: 68000 11.8 Mhz
Z80 8 Mhz
Sound: QSound 4 Mhz
Screen: 384 by 224 pixels
4/3 ratio
59.63 Hz
4096 palette colors
Players: 2
Control: 8-way joystick
Buttons: 6 - 3 punches, 3 kicks (+ Start/Taunt)

Game list
#01* Super Street Fighter II - The New Challengers (SSF2)
#03* Super Street Fighter II Turbo (SSF2T)
#05 Darkstalkers - The Night Warriors (DSTLK)
#08 X-Men - Children of the Atom (XMCOTA)
#09 Night Warriors - Darkstalkers' Revenge (NWARR)
#11 Street Fighter Alpha (SFA)
#12 Marvel Super Heroes (MSH)
#15 Street Fighter Alpha 2 (SFA2)
#18 Street Fighter Alpha 2 Gold (SFZ2AH)
#20 X-Men Vs. Street Fighter (XMVSF)
#22 Vampire Savior - The Lord of Vampire (VSAV)
#23 Marvel Super Heroes Vs. Street Fighter (MSHVSF)
#26 Vampire Savior 2 - The Lord of Vampire (VSAV2)
#27 Vampire Hunter 2 - Darkstalkers' Revenge (VHUNT2)
#28+ Marvel Vs. Capcom - Clash of Super Heroes (MVSC)
#29 Street Fighter Alpha 3 (SFA3)

* SSF2 is probably not compatible, completely different style.
SSF2T has Akuma, and I understand it's the same Akuma
as in XMCOTA, which was "released around the same time"
according to the MAME history file.

+ In Marvel Vs. Capcom Ryu, Ken and Akuma are one
and the same character with a special "switch" move
(QCB+punch) that changes Ryu's color scheme and
skill list. Morrigan has a brand new Super attack,
"Eternal Slumber". These are ofcourse only two examples.
Aside from these, each character plays more or less
exactly like in any other game.

PS: Eternal Slumber is fun to watch. On
standard MAME settings and assuming you're on
the left with three Super levels: Ctrl Z Left A X

It's not so simple. We can only guess at the methods used, and each and every game could've used a different method. Even if it were possible, the CPS-2 games have a dreadful encryption method that only one single human being in the planet (outside Capcom) knows how to break .

Yeah, eternal slumber is fun. have you played the new Samurai Spirits? Iroha's super is kinda like eternal slumber.

...I always wondered why the sprites were so funky in TM.

Anyway, if it's MAME doing the decrypting, we could cheat and use the MAME source, right?

Actually I think that even if the capcom fighting games might have the same code (which I doubt), you would have to find Felicia's code for her movements and such, plus adding her graphics into MVSC...I would just say that this is nearly impossible, but it's just a guess. The best solution for you would be to find MvsC2 iso for dreamcast and play on Chankast, you'll have the choice for characters...
However, the cool thing with cps2 games is that the different parts (gfx, sound, code...) are in separate files, so it's 'easier' to find what you're searching for.
Anyway, Kawaks comes with a built-in 68000 debugger so...have fun

Well, getting MVSC2 would solve the character problem yeah, but then it wouldn't hacking, right?

Actually, if we punch the CPS-2 fighting games, which are indeed too goddamn similar to ignore, there'd be no stopping! It'd be like the next romhacking milestone and it's not even a Mario game! All we need is some experts who know what they doing, to paraphrase Captain.

wrong.
only the program code is encrypted and you can easily decrypt the program roms with the cps2shock xors.
graphics are always uncompressed.

to make the decrypted roms run on real hardware, you need to move accesses to the sprite registers, iirc.
razoola has these patched roms ready for dropping in as replacements into dead gameboards, just ask him.

Viva d4s! But if the graphics are uncompressed/unencrypted, why does TM give me gibberish?

TM most likely doesn't support the CPS2 tile format. Arcade games tend to use non-standard tile sizes and color depths, compared to home consoles. A large number of games use 16x16 tiles, for example...

Good point on the tile format. Maybe the MAME source can help.
