Forgive me for not putting this in the "Music, Movies" and the Tube", but I wanted to put in here, considering this is more of a "psychological" thread more than the discussion of favorites music and artists...

I feel great about life right now!! I am so happy!!

But did you know that music can influence people?

A well established fact is the human body and mind can be controlled and altered with music. Many scientific and medical studies have proved conclusively the tremendous effects of music upon the human physiology and anatomy. Music is used to lower blood pressure, treat mental illness, depression, mental retardation, insomnia and many others.

And on the other token... the negative music will result in an unruly mindset. Some are stronger than others, and this could be one of many reasons why we have a lot of crimes. Someone that listens to Rob Zombie, could end up losing himself, if he is vulnerable and extremely depressed... Think about it guys...

I wanted to test this theory...

I have had some poetry published, and I am a runner up for an award. So I used this gift to test this theory. I decided to write this depressing poem, in my happy state of mind, BUT............. I was listening to the depressing words of Evanescense and other dark artists and this is what I got...

Cold, dark, tasteless; my years
Growing weary of my fears
Enduring the pain of shadow
Loneliness leaving me all but hollow
I’m empty with no heart anymore
My soul nothing but a ruptured sore
Death is the only excitement now
I tried to succeed but I don’t know how
The mystical amethyst-black aura harbors me
With no beauty of light to see
Take me out of this nightmare
I want a piece of life to share
A cold blade would be exhilarating
Because the world keeps hating
I’m bound to be alone eternally
The ugly journey is my destiny
Nothing but the umber prevails
A tale of light I will never tell……

... and I'm freakin' happy in my life right now!!! I believe music in fact DOES influence us, and I also think it depends on the person's situation...

Thoughts??.....

I do believe music can influence people, but unless you're insanely stupid, I don't believe it could make you go kill/rob/poke someone with a fork. Infact music is more likely to make someone happy than make someone angry, it's the person's surroundings that do all that. I listen to music alot when I'm working, if I'm doing art for a specific area, I listen to the music and it helps me feel the theme and soforth.

Also, music rocks.

When I listen to some hard stuff, I usually develop an attitude while driving, and if someone cuts me off or anything stupid, I freakin' get insane...

When it's techno, I feel like moving, playing sports, or doing something active, it uplifts me and makes me feel like getting something acheived...

I did my Final High School Project on this subject.

I believe music influences people to a degree. Not to literally push someone to commit crimes and do things that are otherwise considered 'extreme' but like most sources of media, it affects them a bit. The range of this solely depends on what kind of person it is, their environment, mood, etc..

For me, personally, music does not alter my mood. It may go hand in hand with it, but just because I have Metallica in my car doesn't mean I will develop a sudden case of 'road rage'

That is pretty stupid in itself.

But setz is right. Music does rock.

Well, these are the effects it has on you, Ghost. When I listen to music I pretty much just feel like every other minute of day, albeit feeling a bit more satisfied inside and/or relaxed and/or les angry, but not to the point that my whole attitude toward stuff changes drastically. Music can't affect everybody the same way, even though the effects might be similar for a lot of people.

Edit: Have to agree with setz and Thought too, music does rock.

Yeah it is... I know, but I'm not like SO bad...

I work in construction.... around the most arrogant people on this planet!

And one day my boss said I had to go work under this guy that everyone considered a "dick", and he was. He would rip on your hide for nothing, and be a fool about it... So I one morning put in some hardcore rock, and as I was driving I started imagining how much crap I had to take, and after a couple of songs had passed I felt this wierd rush come over me like "I am the man!" I felt as if I could take the world, but seriously.... I knew that these morons were nothing, and it transformed me to into a totally different person! AND I LOVED IT!!! I felt like a super saiyan! LOL just kidding!!! But I was definently going to take NO crap from this guy whatsoever, and when I got there.... sure enough he started "dicking me between the cheeks", I launched a verbal assualt on this dude, and he flipped out, and not to mention he was surprised that someone actually got in his face! Oh how I loved it!!! It was one of the most exhilerating times of my life.... to stand up to one of the "dickiest" foremans in this trade that no one else would stand up to. I felt good, and I was kicked off that particular site, and had to work at another site.... but I wouldn't trade it for nothing.... pride is one of the best things you can have on a construction site.... LOL

That is an interesting point! You're probobly right... it doesn't necessarily make me feel "evil" per se, but if I listen to dark music during a dark mood, the feeling emphesizes with an extreme rush....

I believe that the music a person listens to, in a way, reflects their state of mind.

Alot of the music I listen to is pretty aggressive, but I do not feel that it makes me more aggressive. Instead, it is somewhat like Ghost explained..a rush, a kick of adrenaline.

The only real effect it has on me, is making me feel better.

To me it's like.. working out.

It's classical music that gets me. Mr. Beethoven in particular. That stuff is so well constructed beyond anything I could ever put together myself. It's like looking at a building that is so prefect that one misplaced brick would bring the whole thing down.

For me it's not that it alters my mood but some things like really good jazz or some killer rock and roll are like good wine. Full of flavor and zest and sublime after-tastes and undertones. I could live without it, but why would I want to?

I think music influences people. I mean, have a child listening to happy music, never hearing one of the many emo bands out there, the dark depressing bands... and have another child listen to nothing but those bands. The children would grow up and represent what they've listened to. Now I know this is largely a generalization, I'm just saying it to state my point.

As for me personally, I listen to a large variety of music. I know that when I'm sad, I can put on some cheerful, uplifting music and I'll feel better. If I'm angry or frustrated, I can put on some "angry" music, so to speak, and I can vent a little. It's a wonderful thing, music.

...

I like classical and big band... not old stuff though... just... you know, piano and strings... ensembles... that kind of stuff

...

Its what I listen to to calm down

Or get in the spirit...

And, yeah, Im assuming playing a musical instrument has a positive effect on your life as well (Better grades anyone?)

Either way... might I mention that once you develop an ear for pitch when playing an instrument, those shortcomings in music become more obvious (One instrument being slightly more flat or sharp than everyone else... not fun )

I myself have a good ear for music. I play drums in a band, and percussion in orchestra. I am THE best. [not bragging]. I suppose it makes me calm unless I'm doing some big time performing. It makes me happy because I'm doing what I like.

I listen to heavier music: Rammstein, System of a Down, Slipknot, DevilDriver, Lamb of God... etc. It makes me feel bad, and cool.

Though I also listen to stuff like, The Killers, Chevelle... etc. They make me appreciate music as a musician.

As for REALLY changing one, I must disagree.

When I want to really push the bad feelings out of me I dive in my Death Metal, industrial, grindcore and noise tunes collection (A.C., Nurse with Wound, Carcass, Dying Fetus, Skinny Puppy, and the like) . When I need to do schoolwork I settle for Jazz (Herbie Hancock and Andreas Vollenweider come to mind), classical (Stravinsky anyone?) and ambient music (Eno, Boards of Canada, Tangerine Dream). Then, if I'm feeling neutral I can listen to anything.

P.S.: Eyeless, I'll consider you the best drummer/percussionist when you will provide proof that you are better than Terry Bozzio, Joe Morello, Buddy Rich, Lionel Hampton, The Bonhams, Mike Portnoy, Neil Peart and Walter Keiser (don't take that meanly, just teasing you)

I play the keyboard, and I love to put together the scariest organ type of music that ends up fading to a beautiful angelic theme, it can be so cool how music can fade to another type, just like a rainbow...

A good example of this happened at work tonight. We were getting killed in terms of the volume of orders that were being made, and everyone's patience was beginning to wear thin. One family came in and ordered 6 crunchwrap combos, which had to be the worst time of the night. In all, they got their 6 crunchwraps, 6 bags of fries, and 6 drinks. The latter two were easy enough to prepare, but the crunchwraps are a pain. Each one takes at least 1 minute to make, and when you've got drive-through orders, as well as other ones coming from people in the dining room (and with most orders having been on the monitors for at least two minutes), it can take quite some time to actually get everything done and given to whoever ordered it.

Anyways, that's not the point. About 9:30, I was ready to walk off line (where the food is prepared), as I was tired of the constant stream of orders. However, right then, a ceratin song came on the radio (Animal I Have Become by Three Days Grace, if it makes a difference), and I was suddenly happy being where I was Upon thinking about it a bit though, that could very well be because I wanted to hear the song, and moving would put me in a position away from the speakers. Whatever the case, after the song was over, I wished I could go home again

The only other example that comes to mind is the following. When I'm doing computer work at Heart and Stroke, I find it next to impossible to concentrate on what I'm doing for a long period of time, unless I'm listening to a long song (long generally meaning an hour or more). I can still get work done if I'm not, but it takes a lot longer

That's about all I can think of to say for now though. It is nearly 7 in the morning, after all

:lol

Listen to Necrophagist, Sleep Terror, Into the Moat, Hate Eternal, Dying Fetus, Dream Theater, Symphony X, Racer X, or Cacophony for musical appreciation, not post-grunge pop music.

Also, to add to the great drummers list: Derek Roddy.

Music can accentuate a state of mind, but it can't change one. Depressive music I find very boring if I am not sad or lethargic, but I can identify with it and really enjoy it if I am. Likewise, listening to death metal just won't affect me at all if I'm not in the mood for it.

It takes a full on sensory assault to change a mood, not just one of the five.

Chevelle is NOT pop. They are Hard Rock to Metal... And you know what, Rammstein, Slipknot, and Devil Driver beat ALL those bands...

Ever heard of... "The Heretic Anthem" ...? Do so. You'll see what I'm talking about.

It all comes down to personal preference.

It's clearly shown that both of you have your own definition of what is 'good' and what is 'heavy' just leave it at that.

Either way. Does anyone else find themselves listening to the "Eye of the Tiger" Theme from the Rocky movies when doing strenuous activies?

No. When I do strenuous activities, I listen to stuff like "Orange Crunch" by Green Jelly. or "Carnage Rules."
