We went to the mall...

Yeah, I know, strange way to spend fathers day.

Go to the mall to buy him something?

For those of you who hate today, take solace in the fact that it's almost over and you can rest easily for 365 days.

Well, guess what I got my dad for Father's Day? Nothing.

He didn't seem to mind, though.

I'm a good kid; I got my dad a card. He always says he doesn't want gifts, but we suprise him, and he enjoys it.

I think he likes his birthday more though, since he actually gets something wheather he likes it or not then.

Why bother with material gifts he probably won't want?

Money is easily the best present.

It's the thought that counts, Alastor. Even if it's a gift certificate, it'd show that you care. Cash...doesn't really show much.

Don't bother, asdf. We already talked about the money thing and it's like trying to reason with a brick wall. Unacceptable, end of story.

Yeah, it certainly does show love to mindlessly go ahead and assume you know exactly what they want. That's not an arrogant mindset at all, and I'm a fool to have ever thought that it was a good idea to guarantee a good present with considerably less effort.

Seriously, guys, I just.

I don't understand the logic you're using. I just... Your arguments just don't make sense.

Then you know what? If you can't think of what to get someone, then give them a card and tell them that you had no idea what to get him/her but that any suggestions would be welcome. Simple.

I wished my dad a Happy Birthday today.

Only to take five seconds of silence to realize that I had the days mixed up.

He didn't eat his cake though. (Not yet)

It says "I love you daddy"

Clearly, I must've been drunk when I picked the cake because for me to choose this cake over the "Super-dad" cake is just wrong.

You do realize. You pay more for those gift cards than you get from those gift cards. And they are only good in one store.

That is just strictly worse than real money.

Gift cards don't get taxed.

Gift cards are more personal than money.

They tell the person that you had an idea of what to get, but didn't want to choose for them (ie you were thinking of a book, but didn't know which, so you got a Borders gift card).

To me, that's acceptable.

Just plain cash? No.

But then it turns out someone else got them the book, and they laugh at you for wasting money when they also wanted DVDs which Borders doesn't sell.

Gift cards aren't personal. There is no tradition behind them, they're too recent. You are being manipulated by a marketing campaign.

To share my unwanted thoughts.

I agree with Kyouji on the whole "Money as a gift being acceptable" thing.

It all comes down to how your own father reacts. I know my dad would not care if I gave him money as a gift. Would most likely appreciate it more than that stupid mug I thought he wanted.

Yeah, but in most cases you don't have to take care of your parents. Just... have an idea of something you want to get him. Don't take the lazy way out.

It may be lazy, but it's still better than gift cards. Lazy is infinitely more desirable than stupid.

I consider money to a "I couldn't think of what to give you, so I gave you enough money to go buy what you want, and you won't have to worry about getting something you never wanted."

I give my brother money for his birthday to buy what he wants, because when you're thirteen, 40$ is a lot of money to give away. You don't to buy something they'll enjoy for three days, you want to give them something they'll enjoy for the life-time. Y'know, so I don't feel like I wasted my money.

Pff. While it's nice to get stuff and such... I think gifts are a rather lame idea. I mean... You won't really earn from it in the long run, because at some point, it will be your turn to give. Well, ok. Father's Day might be something else, but it's something that we don't really have in Denmark. Mother's Day, though.

Yeah, but there's a difference between your brother and your father. :\ You don't really need to spoil your father.
