Great. I can never think of a good thing to give my dad. Maybe some Hotwheels and an alien calender or something...

I'll probably get him something nice, but I don't know what. Any ideas?

Having my dad's birthday and father's day within a week of each other every year is a pain in the ass. I already got him what he wanted, and now it's like... you know he's not going to use/enjoy anything else to waste money on.

Argh.

If he got what he wanted, then let it be.

You're not obligated to honor both occasions separately if they're so close to each other.

Of course, this does not mean that you shouldn't neglect them both, either.

I did not neglect his birthday. I spent $100 on it and he and I don't even get along.
But I know for a fact that he'll bitch at me if I don't get him something on Father's day. He's just... like that.

I hate finding gifts, especially for my own family. I never know what to get them. But I guess it sucks more when you get a gift, give it to them, and they still sulk.

Sometimes I wish people wouldn't count so much on materialistic gifts. It's just too much trouble trying to read minds.

Amen.

Most of the time I end up getting Dad some socks and underwear. And maybe a shirt or two to go with it.

Getting money is just so EASY, though. And it can be used to purchase something he wants!

I'm of the belief that you should NEVER give your parents MONEY as a gift. A GIFT CARD, on the other hand, is acceptable.

I've been taught that giving money to your parents is extremely rude. If you want to get them something open-ended, you do the gift card thing. ($20 at a bookstore so that he can get a book or two, for instance.)

if you earned the money from some other source like a job, then it is okay. If you earned the money from your parents, and then give it back...then it is like returning the money

Well, still... if you're going to give a gift to your parents, wouldn't you rather have it be something you put at least a little thought into?

Yeah, I agree with Colin. I thinking giving anyone just plain dollar bills is tacky. At least show that you put some thought into it, you know? Pulling your wallet out of your pocket is not the kind of thought I'm talking about.

although, in asian cultures, once you are already married, you are expected to give money back to your parents and in-laws... and that is what is probably going to happen for father's day this weekend in my extended family...
