Gay fairy tale sparks civil rights debate

Was the teacher justified in reading the book without notifying the parents?

Now, see, I've read the book, and it's no more "sexual" or explicit than, say, Cinderella, or Snow White (you know, that harlot that slept with seven dwarves).

Well this seems to be rather hypocritical. I keep hearing that schools shouldn't be teaching moral values, that parents should be doing that...so why should the school be teaching moral values in this case? Is it "ok" because of the particular ones involved?

I have to agree with Skydude....

parents should be teaching their kids about sex and sexuality not schools

I know I don't want my kids growing up thinking it's natural to be gay, whether or not people think it is natural.

there is a difference between tolerating a behaviour and accepting it.... I don't want my children to be accepting of homosexuality.... they will tolerate it, but not accept it

I tend to agree with geogree and Skydude on this one. I'm suspicious of any government attempts to use its forums to push a certain point of view on a moral or social issue. Call me a nutty libertarian, but I don't think it's right for the government to do this with their school system. (Of course, I don't think there should be a school system period, but that's just neither here nor there.)

Well, I doubt this is the government pushing it, but rather the teacher him/herself doing so. I think the answer to whether it's "ok" is the same either way, but if the answer to that question is "no" then the root of the problem, and hence the solution, is different.

well, I think it's safe to assume that it was the teacher that did it and not the school board or government

but why are the teachers values being pushed onto the students? just because the teacher is okay with homosexuality or thinks it is equal etc etc etc doesn't mean he/she should be allowed to teach young children those same values.... let the parents, or at least the sex education teacher try that. At least in sex education it won't be slipped into stories. It will be outright and obvious what is being talked about and suggested and hopefully the kids will be old enough by that point to make a judgement on their own about homosexuality and not adopt the teachers opinion when they are 6.

Even though I agree with children being taught to be accepting of gays, I don't agree with that being taught in schools. In schools, people are to learn knowledge. Home and the religious building/altar of a person's choosing (if applicable) are the places for moral lessons.

Edit: Had to break up that last sentence with some sort of punctuation.

contratiction here, in other word, you want your children to adopt only YOUR opinion and not the the teacher one, wich is as bad.
...
yeah, its not the school work to teach that, and its also not the school work to teach religion, but they still doing it

So if schools aren't to teach morals, and parents aren't to teach morals (as you just said), then who is supposed to teach morals?

wow.... I just noticed Chev posted in.... thanks... that's about what I wanted

and yeah, I'd want to teach them MY morals.... and not the schools, or the governments ideas of what morals should be

my children will also be part of the religion I'm a part of, until the age of 18 when I will set them free to choose as they see fit (since they are adults and legally I have no control or required influence anymore)....

moral is something personnal, you should discover your own morallity from yourself since I consider it part of each person devloppement. see, my parent is christian, school tried to make me christian, but, I'm atheist, and will alway be, its my own choice, not somebody else one

so you suggest that kids should not be taught morals? no idea of right and wrong?

I'm not talking specifically religion.... but morals in general

they should just pick it up on their own then?

Honestly, if you really think a little 5 year old kid is ready to develop his or her own concepts of right and wrong, I hope that you never have kids. To most young kids (we'll go with ages 2-4), "right" is "getting my way". Likewise, "wrong" is "not getting my way". Without being taught anything about morals, that attitude will more than likely continue throughout life, probably resulting in a few jail sentences, since once you get past the early stages, it's even harder to change a child's behavior.

I've not raised any kids myself, but I've helped take care of many cousins throughout various stages of their lives. I see what happens when they're raised properly and when they're not.

not 5 year old, but maybe in around 12-13 year old, when they will have more life experience, when child will start to learn various thing about life, its normal for a 5 year old child to think that way, since they don't realise the result of anything they do, seeing the result of his action will allow him to devlop his moral

ex:he insult a youger child causing him to cry

it is the same thing for religion, if you kid is really christian, you won't going to need to force him to read the bible, he will read it himself

but, if you keep forcing him to adopt your moral until 18 year, he may never devlop his own moral, because he will believe his own is worthless when compared to your

I'm going to teach my kids principles and values, and allow them to reason for themselves what their moral code is going to be.

My kids are going to be damn rational people.

The teacher was just reading a picture book... most picture books tend to be filled with lots of things you probably don't want your children to emulate.

Do you all want your little girls to have their self worth totally based on their beauty, and the the fulfilment of their lives dependent on some 'Prince Charming'? Do you want to teach you children that all step-mothers are evil?

What about if the school has a 'family day'? Do the kids with gay parents have to be excluded?

And we complain about people being discriminatory...It's being bred in our schools, for crying out loud.

Without being taught from a young impressionable age that this is not a bad thing to be (Gay, I mean), how do we expect change in our society? Our future is learning from our examples, and if no toleration of this is being taught, then perhaps our future is a bleak future indeed, and the masochists and satanists were right.

Excuse me for one second, but I do think we're missing something incredibly obvious here.

IT'S A FUCKING FAIRY TALE

Thankyou.

A whole bunch of people need a good hard bash on the head from the Grow The Fuck Up Fairy (Maybe I need to write a fairy tale...). What do they want, to deny that gay people exist?

Fairy tales are fairy tales. Let's just get a bit of perspective here... they all perpetuate massively sexist caricatures of human relationships of the sort no-one should want their kids emulating. They all peddle the idea that beauty is the most important thing ever, and usually, that ugly people are basically evil. They often promote murder and absolute monarchy. And witchcraft.

Truth is, all fairy tales are probably harmful to kids self-esteems and value-formation. But really, whatever. They're god-damn fairy tales, and this point cannot be stressed enough.

What difference does it make if we throw one more story into the mix, especially one which on the surface of it sounds a lot less objectionable than many of the others.... sure, fairy tales aren't that good, but it's not like the stories we hear at 5 or 6 maddively affect us in the long term. THEY'RE FAIRY TALES.

How about because it's rather obviously politically motivated?
