I had all four taken out yesterday. Three were simple extractions. The fourth was horizontal under the gum. The simple extractions are pretty much done being owey. The fourth is sore and giving me a chipmunk cheek on the right side of my face. I have a prescription for generic Vicodin, but it didn't seem to do anything other than give me a nasty dizzy/cold sweat/nauseous spell that (thankfully) went away after a few minutes lying on the floor and praying I wouldn't hurl. Screw that...I'll stick to good old standard ibuprofen.

Yeah, yesterday pretty much sucked, what with the nasty taste in the back of my throat, the grogginess, and the general feeling of grumpiness from not having been allowed to eat for 6 hours before the operation. I didn't do much other than keep falling asleep on the floor.

At least today is much better now that the anesthesia is out of my system and the mouth pain has gone down. And I have a good excuse to live off pudding for the near future. Mmm...pudding.

Ouchies.

Friend of mine had hers removed, and I remember calling her after the surgery to have to yell "UHCUHTUHGUHWUH," which is wisdom teeth talk for "I CAN'T TALK GO AWAY."

I fear the day I need mine removed, if I do have to get them yanked.

Ummm...

You know ibuprofen is not a pain killer right?

It is an anti-inflamatory. It hightens blood flow, and in some cases thins it out. You take it for swelling, or sometimes for headaches because sometimes headaches can be caused by too much/too little blood flow to the brain.

As far as it being a pain killer... not really effecient. However, if you have and open/healling wound, something like say... holes in your gums from having your wisdom teeth pulled, you do not want to take ibuprofen. It could cause the blood to thin out and not heal properly. Nor would you want to have any alcohol (ethinol more precisly, the kind that you drink) for any pain because that does thin the blood. And don't use straws... causes pressure in your mouth and could open those suckers right back up.

Enough of my lecturing... sorry about that.

Well... I hope you feel better. Get some rest and such... and please, have some pudding for me

Hehehe, Iīve gotten all wisdom teeth already and have not had a single problem with them. Until now. Iīll probably remove one in the summer since itīs a hole in it.

I will get anaesthetics so donīt worry about me.

Good that it went well, Rydain.

Danielle - Sounds like your friend had an especially bad case. Depending on how yours come in, you might have a much easier recovery. It can also help to get them out when you're young before the roots form.

1174 - No worries...it was a polite lecture, so I appreciate it. I thought that, as a NSAID, ibuprofen might help with the swelling in my mouth and any pain related to that. It has worked well for other inflammation-type pain I've had. That cranky spot in my mouth is feeling better, but if it starts getting on my nerves, I'll find some acetaminophen. The other ingredient in the generic Vicodin must have been what was making me feel sick. Normal acetaminophen never bothered me, and I'm aware that it actually is a painkiller. I'll save you some pudding...my friends brought over a ton of it, and I don't know if I can eat it all myself.

Trapster - Some people have enough room in their jawbone for all of their wisdom teeth. If yours are all aligned properly, maybe you can just get that cavity filled.

Ziff - Were you lucky enough to be born without any wisdom teeth?

Oh yuck, at least the worst is over with now.
What happens if you don't do anything about wisdom teeth?

Unless they're properly aligned, they can be difficult to clean and get cavities easily. They can also become infected or cause damage to the neighboring teeth and bone. I'm not sure how that works, but I thought preemptive surgery sounded much more pleasant.

I remember this topic coming up a while back.

All I have to say after getting two of my wisdom teeth pulled is, if I were inclined to do some sort of drug, nitrous oxide would be my drug of choice. Heh heh.

I need to pay a visit to the good ol' dentist.

Two weeks ago, I got a serious infection around one of my wisdom tooth.

Had to take antiobiotics, pain killers and anti-inflamatory for a week or so.

Very pleasant it was.

My anesthesia experience wasn't quite that interesting...more like "amazingly efficient". I got an IV of something that hurt as it circulated throughout my hand, then I started counting backward from 100 and then the next thing I knew, I was awake and done. What exactly is nitrous like, anyway?

I know my brother got his wisdom teeth out probably a couple weeks ago now, and for the first couple days he didn't hesitate to let you know how his mouth felt. Given that he couldn't talk very well though, he had to write out whatever he wanted to say. There's still a sheet of paper somewhere in the kitchen with "My mouth feels like a cloth" written on it

He's actually been the worst of between him, my sister, and me in terms of having to get teeth removed. He's had probably 5 or 6 appointments now for such a procedure, whereas my sister's had to get all of two teeth (I think) removed so far, and I've only had one taken out I don't know about her, but I clearly remember being told at the end of an appointment that I likely wouldn't have to get my wisdom teeth removed, because they've come in in such a way so as not to cause problems. Whatever the case, I feel fortunate there

I wish I had some sort of personal point of reference but, judging from my friends' descriptions of the effects of various drugs, it resembles marijuana or mushrooms. What I remember was having a sense of time, though it was terrible distorted. Voices all registered, and I knew what each person (the dentist, his assistant, others around the office) was saying, but they seemed to be saying very unusual things. In retrospect, and to the best of my memory, they were speaking of completely normal things, carrying on casual conversation or talking to a patient over the phone or asking me to open wider, but it seemed bizarre at the time. There was strange music playing, too.

All in all, a great time .

Actually, wisdom teeth are vestigal, which would make the people whose mouths have room for them less evolved.

My wisdom teeth are still coming in. I think the top two are in fully though. I've been told I don't have to get them out unless I have problems with them which I haven't had. So I get to keep mind.

No, my mother and all her family simply didn't get the damned things. It is weird, but my mother's didn't come in, at all. And the dentist said that the same will probably be for me.

Whoever 1174 is: When I had my wisdom teeth taken out, I was pretty much PRESCRIBED ibuprofen to take afterwards. It was a "painkiller" but really just a strong aspirin.

Rydain: I'm surprised you got put under. It was technically an option for me but that would have to be done in the hospital and would cost a lot of cash. :\ So we went with what is generally Plan A... 4 needles full of local anesthetic that conveniently started to wear off an hour or two after the surgery. :\

But at least it's done now for both of us.

I keep thinking I need to go to a dentist and find out if I need mine removed. After all, I'm 25, I'd assume I'd need to do something about them by now.

Not particularly worried about it all though. I'd rather have a general anaesthetic in the hospital when it's done, maybe I need to check my insurance so I can do so.
