Topics like abortion, religion, and politics (and one of the many combinations), are good for heated debates, but how about a break with a topic that doesn't get people too riled up, but can still be very interesting.

First cryptozoology:

Do you believe in bigfoot? Nessy? chupacabra? yeti?

What about aliens?

Do you beleve there's life on other planets? Intelligent life? What about UFOs? Alien abductions?

I think you get the idea.

I believe in the Flying Spaghetti Monster.

I also believe that Global Warming is caused by a lack of Pirates.

This thread is already borderline Crazyness Domain material. If things start to take on a nurttier aspect in here, I'm going to move this thread. Just keep that in mind incase you find the thread has vanished from this forum, that's where it will be if it does.

I think God is an Alien, so to speak. I think he is physically real, and he created humanity through technology.

In high school I harboured a vague belief in Aliens, but I guess that was more in an X-Files sense than REALLY considering the possibility of life elsewhere in the universe.

Now, I don't believe in much of anything, besides science. And looking at this from as logical a stance as I can, I believe that the universe is too vast to not have other forms of life in it somewhere, and that it may be arrogant of us to think otherwise (or of course you may believe otherwise for religious reasons, which I'm not touching).

The Flying Spaghetti Monster is cool though. Not for the silliness of it all.... look up the FSM and you'll see why I like him

And Arwon, no, it's the decline in Pirate numbers that have led to Global Warming... We don't currently have a surplus of Pirates. Or Ninjas. Sheesh you two! Go look up Flying Spaghetti Monster, now!

I'm a bit more open minded on the concepts related to cryptozoology then UFO's and aliens.

The trouble with cryptozoology though is that anyone who becomes a cryptozoologist tends to already believe in these unconfirmed species, so they set out specifically to prove their existance. While any expedition done by a traditional zoologist almost always have the purpose of debunking the possiblity of their existance. Either way, any study where a particualar outcome is specifically sought tends to create skewed results.

Of course, as far as actually proving te existance of any of these species, the only way it will happen is that an actual body is found. However, I think there is enough circumstancial evidence at this point to warrant much more serious interest than there is.

For instance, two expeditions to the Himalayas have turned up hairs from a previously unknown primate. I'm not saying it's yeti, but isn't anyone curious what it is? Even if its some small species of monkey, isn't that worth looking into?

Alot of zoologist say that pretty much all the large mammals have been discovered. Maybe this is true, but in the 1800's Europeans traveling to Africa dismissed the native's accounts of a huge ape that lived in the jungle, and of course the gorilla was eventually discovered. No zoologists took the idea of the giant panda seriously until 1912. And as recently as the mid-90's two new species of bovine were discovered in Vietnam, which of course, the natives new about all along. Yet, zoologist still refuse to seriously investigate the claims of the natives of the Himalayas.

The Himalayas are vast, and mostly uninhabited, so its not too hard to accept the possibilty that a substainable population of large primates could live there for so long and go undiscovered. However, bigfoot of the American Northwest is a little different. And it stands to reason, that the more wilderness we replace with homes and businesses, the more often we would encounter them. But all we really have is a few hundred foot castings, a lot of not nessicarily reliable witnesses, and a suspicious film. Its possible however, that we've simply been pushing their population farther north in to less densely populated areas, or maybe we've just drove another species to extinction without knowing it.

As far as aliens go, I can only assume there must be some other life in the universe. Intelligent life though, I'm not sure. I mean the universe may be huge, but so is the amount of variables involved in the development of intelligent life. And I find the idea that they've came here even harder to believe. And then of course alien abductions are even less likely.

There is, however an Air Force base at Groom Lake, in the former nuclear test site area arbitarily numbered 51. Most likely though, the crafts people thought were UFOs were more likely unusually shapes prototype planes such as the stealth bomber. Actually the most sinister thing to go on there was the use of it "nonexistant" status for illegal burning of toxic waste, which led to the eventual death of several base employees. But that's a seperate issue.

Wow, yet another site I've gone to many times that is in fact maintained by a boarder.

For all the cryptozoological creatures and aliens, I'll believe them when i see them. And even then...
