Granted, but even IN the Mario universe, Podoboos can't do anything but jump out of lava and fall back in to lava.

Originally but if you look closely at the poodobos in Mario RPG you'll see that in Barrel Volcano the poodobos will jump out of lava a few times and then chase after you thus starting the fight scene. And being that Paper Mario is an RPG as well.........

Actually, they're not called Podoboo in SMRPG. There's Sparky, Pyroshpere, and Fireball (and he's blue). Besides, those have cores in the middle where as normal Podoboos are merely ghost-shaped lava blobs/fireballs.
