KNOWN BUGS: Palette issues with Mario/Luigi when going into/leaving a level at times. The game over screen isn't complete, thus, a game over crashes the game. The
Save the King castle at the end of World 1 Mario's side looks ugly, I know.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone! As promised, here's a demo release of Luigi vs Mario. A lot of things are included in this hack, but a lot of things are not. Most of world 1 for Mario side is available and a few levels from each world for Luigi's side. The other levels have been scrapped in the demo so you cannot access them. What's all changed? Good lord that's a lot to list here, so I'll just put the Manual/ here and let you guys read for yourself. The Manual/ is not extensive by any means, like the new enemies aren't put in here, nor are some of the new blocks, but most of the hack SHOULD be self explanatory, but what isn't has been put into this Manual/:

Please excuse the shoddy HTML work. This document was created with the purpose of providing a clear explanation of Luigi vs Mario. This isn't aimed at changing every aspect in the game like Mario Adventure did. Rather, this hack's purpose is to create a fun hack that people will enjoy playing through.

The Story

Bowser, being tired of being thwarted by the Mario Bros., has once again kidnapped the Princess. However, Bowser realized that the key to the brother's victory is team work: Mario and Luigi's combined strengths are Bowser's weakness. Bowser realized that to beat the brothers, he must seperate them. Bowser lured each brother away from each other. Then he told each one that they must get to him before the other brother does, else the Princess's life will end! So, Mario believes he must make it to Bowser before his brother does and vice versa. And thus, they're off on opposite adventures for the same destination thinking they must get there before the other...

Character Select

At the title screen, press [SELECT] to switch between Mario and Luigi. The character shown walking is the currently selected character.

Luigi:

Mario:

Character Differences

The main difference is that Mario and Luigi have unique levels and worlds. There are 8 unique worlds for each brother, so in essence, there are two completely different quests to go through! The differences don't end there. Each character has different Mushroom Shops, items to earn in the bonus levels and specific powers for each.

Luigi World Select:

Mario World Select:

Luigi World 1:

Mario World 1:

Character Powers

* Mario *

Mario retains the item reserve from Mario Adventure, however, this new one is improved. Now, when you press [SELECT], the power-up sprite is generated on screen, much like Super Mario World.

Mario has a Fire Flower in his reservation:

Mario has pressed [SELECT] to use this item:

Note: The current item reserved will not appear on the map screen because a couple of items will be shown in this box instead. Items in this box on the map screen show that it will take effect in the next level.

Mario used a Kuribo's shoe to take effect in the next level:

* Ice Flower *

Rumor has it that Mario has developed a new technique: Ice Powers. He has supposedly found the rare Ice Flower and harnessed it's power to turn enemies into throwable ice blocks. It's a very rare flower and rather expensive, however, rumor has it that Mario has gotten interested in alchemy and is learning how to mix items to create a new one...

Mario using ice balls:

The ice balls at work:

Using the ice blocks:

* Mega Star *

This item gives Mario invincibility for an entire level.

* Luigi *

Luigi has sharpened his skills with the Fire flower and has the ability to throw up to five fireballs at once, rather than the two limit of his older brother. He has also become more skilled with the Boomerang Suit, allowing him to throw 5 boomerangs at once. Along with these extended abilities, Luigi can now equip some items from the map screen to be used in a level.

This is the current item equipped for Luigi:

This is the number of uses left for this item:

* Level Pass *

This item can be used to clear a level at any time. Just press select anywhere in a level and you will exit it, completing that level. However, this only works on normal levels, not Fortresses and Airships.

* Item Bag *

This item has unique powers. When equipped, pressing select will take your current power-up and take it away from you and store it into your item box. This can be used up to 5 times, making it easy to obtan rare items easily, however, it's very expensive!

* Star Equip *

This lets Luigi use a Starman at any time in a level, but it only has one use. This is very useful to get past those difficult areas.

* !-switch *

This lets Luigi use the !-switch at any time in a level. However, the !-switch abilities do not include changing enemies into coins, only changing switch blocks and bricks into coin.

* Savior Wings *

This wings will save Luigi if he happens to fall into a pit. If he touches the bottom of the screen, he'll be given the Raccon suit, thrown into the air and given a short amount of flying time to recover from the fall.

* POW Block *

With this item equipped, press [SELECT] to clear all the enemies on the screen. You only get two uses out of this item, however, it's stackable. Equipping 2 POW blocks gives you 4 uses. 3 gives you 6 and 4 gives you 8 (limit).

* Ice Blocks *

This item lets you generate an ice block out of thin air by holding [SELECT] and pressing . You only get 9 uses out of this item.

* Stop Watch *

With this item equipped, press [SELECT] to freeze all sprites on the screen for a small period of time. There's only one use for the stop watch, but this item is stackable. You can equip it multiple times for a greater effect. Equipping a stop watch twice will give you the effect twice as long. It can be equipped up to 8 times for 8 times the effect.

* Star Feather *

The Star Feather grants Luigi very unique abilities. It grants him the same powers as the Raccoon Suit, with many additional ones. First off, by holding , you can charge your P-Meter, even from a standing state. By holding [DOWN] then pressing and continuingly holding down , you will turn into Star Mode. Star mode makes Luigi invincible from all enemies. He can also destroy bricks and eye blocks by being over them from above, but not from the side or under. However, under Star mode, the timer runs down 4x quicker, so using it too much will shorten your length of time to complete the level, so beware! This item is very hard to find and very expensive to buy, however, Luigi has been seen taking alchemy classes and supposedly can mix items together somehow to reproduce the Star Feather effect...

Breaking a brick from above (note, not seen because he is mid-blink animation due to time running out in this mode):

Breaking an eye block from above (note, not seen because he is mid-blink animation due to time running out in this mode):

Shell Kicking

There are two new ways to kick shells.

* Upward Kick*

Holding [UP] before letting go of will send shell into the air. Be careful, you cannot catch an airborn kicked shell! The speed that the shell will move depends on the speed of the moving character.

* No Spin Kick*

Holding [DOWN] before letting go of will send a shell forward without a spin. A non-spinning shell will stop on the ground on. This is useful for carrying shells for long distances.

Goal Cards

Goal cards will soon serve a new purpose, right now collecting three yields a coin bonus, but this will change soon. The effects of 3 leaves is unknown, so beware of glitches.

There's now a 4th goal card you can collect:

Mushroom

Flower

Star

Leaf

Your two current goal cards are shown in the lower right hand corner, the third is not shown at the bottom since your cards are cleared after three levels:

Fortresses and Keys

Fortresses usually contain a Boom-Boom at the end of them. Defeating a Fortress level for the first time will cause the Boom-Boom to produce a key, which is to be used later in the world to get further into it.

Fighting a Boom-Boom:

Obtaining its key:

The key is in your item box now:

Using the key to unlock the path:

However, you can re-enter fortresses for replaying them, but defeating the same Boom-Boom another time will yield a generic ? ball:

Mushroom Shops

Mushroom shops are placed in each world. Entering them lets you spend your hard earned coins to buy items. Different houses yield different items and prices. There are six chests in the shop. The farthest left chest contains the first item at the top of the list and continues to the right in the same fashion. If you don't have sufficient coins to buy an item, you will not be able to open its chest. If you decide not to buy anything, just simply leave through one of the doors to the left or right of the house.

!-switch Powers

The !-switch now has new powers that extend beyond the orginal. Now a !-switch will deactivate/activate certain blocks, and in some levels, turn enemies into red coins. Red coins are worth 5 times the amount of regular coins.

Inactive and active blocks:

Activate the !-switch here:

Orange blocks are activated:

Blue blocks become deactivated:

Kuribo's Shoe

Kuribo's shoe now has the ability to stand on lava.

Vines, Fences and Ladders

Some fences can now be climbed on. Ladders in some levels may also be climbed on. A new feature added for climbing these and vines is the ability to jump from them.

Clinging to a fence:

Jumping from a fence:

Clinging to the fence above:

New Suits

* Mouser Suit *

The Mouser Suit makes the wearer a bit speedier than normal. He can also generate exploding bombs by holding [UP] and pressing . You can also do a spin attack by holding [UP] before jumping.

* Panda Suit *

The Panda Suit lets the wearer defy gravity. Hold [UP] + [A] when you touch a ceiling to flip upside down and stick to it. Continue holding [A] to remain on the ceiling. Very useful to getting to some secrets or by-passing hard situations. You can do a spin attack by holding down [UP] before jumping.

* Boomerang Suit *

The Boomerang Suit makes it's wearer completely invulnerable to fire balls and lava (yes, you can walk on lava!). You can also throw boomerangs that can destroy many enemies.

Bonus Stage

The bonus stages are indicated with a star on their level tile. The include bonus stage has you collect falling red coins for thirty seconds. If you fall down one of the gaps or if the time runs out, the stage ends and the prize appears at the bottom of the screen.

Collect these coins as they fall, number left to get the 1st prize shown in the status bar:

Don't down fall these gaps, else the stage ends:

Collection prize chart:

0-2 Coins : 4th prize

3-5 coins : 3rd prize

6-8 coins : 2nd prize

9 + coins : 1st prize

The 3rd and 2nd prizes differ between Mario and Luigi.

That looks super awesome... when I came to this thread I figured "it probably won't look that great". First couple of screenshots: "yep, I'm right"... game set up and world/level screenshots "hell yes!"

I want to try this game sometime. It looks very nice! Good job.

Whoa.

This feels more like an SNES game than NES, really. Both from graphics and gameplay.
(And that is quite the best thing one can say about NES games. )

Still, I found some kind of bug... when playing as Mario, after I passed three levels, the passed level tile turned into Luigi's "L" tile
edit: Also, the Airship in the end of Mario World 1 is passable without being beaten.

Anyway, kudos.

Good work.

But, looking at it again, I still don't see the point of having the three different kinds of mushroom houses within one world, unless there's some secret way that Mario will later be able to enter the green Mushroom houses, or Mario will later be able to play on the Luigi worlds.

Anyway, as far as the demo goes, I enjoyed it a lot, very interesting, very professional looking.

The only unusual things I noticed were that

1) after I got a Game Over, it went back to the original SMB3 opening sequence (with Mario catching the leaf, Luigi hitting him with the shell, etc.), which may be a bug or may just be something that's there -- it went back to the character select title screen as soon as I pressed start anyway, so no big deal.

2) The palettes on the Mario world/level seemed really dark. Actually, the darkness isn't bad, they just had extreme contrast, I guess, with the highlights seeming really bright against the other dark tones.

3) All the new graphics look pretty decent too, with one exception (and this is just a personal opinion, naturally): I really don't like the giant eyes on the hills in the background! But that's just me.

In all though, it's a lot of fun, and really impressive. Playing it, it feels like you enjoyed yourself making it, which is probably why it's turning out so well (so fast) and is interesting to play.

Good luck, keep us posted -- Happy Thanksgiving!

A small bug I discovered accidentally : in giant levels, you can actually enter the background flowers which are the same size as a door (which bring you to an empty level where you fall down to your death)

Other than that, great news, good job, etc.

Perhaps you're using the wrong patch? He gave two patches that depend on the type of rom you have. Could also be a header issue (I was pretty sure NES roms had headers too but I'm no expert in that area.)

DD, I'm tempted to play this. But I don't want to spoil anything for when it gets finished. It looks really appealing so far.

So far, this hack is really cool, DahrkDaiz. I found some bugs while playing Mario mode (I didn't play Luigi mode yet ):

* When you get the third card, one of the tiles for the third card appears at the bottom right-hand corner.

* When you use SELECT to generate a mouse or panda suit on the screen, the suit turns into beetle junk.

* Messed up panda suit graphics.

* The blank tiles for collecting coins don't match the BG....

I'll report any more I find after I finish Luigi's world 1. You've done a great job. Keep it up!

I know this is just a demo but there is so many little bugs that I just can't enjoy it properly.

EDIT: Some bugs
When Mario grows with a mushroom, he grows with luigi's appearance.

In the giant level, I kicked the giant beetle shell into the air, when it fell to the ground I attempted to kick it but I got killed instead.

In the same level, I kicked an ice block and it broke on the other side of the screen.

In the level where you have to defeat the 3 ninjis to progress (on luigi's quest), I jumped on one of the ninjis later in the level with big luigi and he shrunk as if I jumped on a spiny.

There are a few more and the ones I was going to mention next have already been posted.

Another bug: For 1-7 Luigi mode, In the pipe surrounded with blue ! blocks, going inside makes you go to a level and fall to your doom. I think that that pipe is required to continue the level or finish it. I'll try to find another way to exit the level.

EDIT: More bugs tile misplacements:

* One of the pipe tiles look weird.

* Messed up water GFX (when !-switch is on).
