Basically, this is a thread about platformers released for the PS2. I'm mostly a fan of RPG/Adventure games and some action titles, but I enjoy platformers from time to time. I thought to make this thread after playing through a bit of Maximo: Ghosts to Glory which I bought a few weeks ago for a mere $5.

If any of you have played Jak & Daxter: The Precursor Legacy, know that the gameplay feels somewhat familiar, though in a different setting and obviously not identical mechanics (though they feel similar oftentimes). The difference is not only in the difficulty, which is itself very different (Maximo is rather tough even towards the start), but it seems to me like the developers went out of their way to make the game as frustrating as they possibly could, in several senses. As such, I felt the need to put it down for the sake of my sanity.

I absolutely loved the Jak trilogy. Just wonderful games. Does anyone have any games they would recommend?

Jak is pretty decent from what I've played. But let's not detract from this thread.

Tell us all of Maximo. For truly, it is glory itself!

God of War. If you can call it one. I believe so. As my friend put it, that game is the quintessential penis to all, well, I don't need to finish that...

I love the Ratchet and Clank series. Platforming action, lots of amusing and useful weapons, RPG elements (killing enemies gets you experience that levels up your life meter and weapons).... I haven't played the first game, but I was addicted to Going Commando (replayed it multiple times) and got through most of Up Your Arsenal. I liked Going Commando better, but Up Your Arsenal is also great if you don't mind a more action-oriented focus. The developers implemented the increased action very well. You have a series of self-contained missions in a smallish, enclosed area. Even if you fail a mission, you'll get weapons and character experience and more than enough bolts (money) to refill your ammo, so you're getting stronger as you keep trying. I had to try many of the missions multiple times, but for the reasons I mentioned, it was an enjoyable experience. I haven't finished Up Your Arsenal because the last boss is difficult and I got distracted by other games, but still, it's fun.

Both games start out easy and increase in difficulty in a reasonable, fair, and doable way. Dying (which is going to happen often ) puts you at a continue point, and you essentially have unlimited lives, so this will never force you to restart the level. Theoretically speaking, you might have difficulties if you run out of ammo and have no way to refill it, but this never gave me any problems. There are certain points in the game where I had to make multiple trips to complete an area (for instance, I didn't have enough ammo to get all 100 desert crystals at the same time), but you can do a lot in one round, so it never gets annoying. The game also provides shortcuts to let you skip difficult stretches of an area that you already completed. I like a fair, fun challenge and detest unfair cheap shots, and I loved these games. This should tell you that the frustration factor is low.

Eh, Kingdom Hearts is more RPGish than anything, though the original is a lot closer to platformer than the sequel.

I will definitely have to check out the Ratchet & Clank series. It sounds there quite a bit like the Jak games in some of the general gameplay elements, and I've heard good things in general.

And Rydain, if you haven't played the Jak games, I HIGHLY recommend them. Just don't be too disappointed that there aren't any guns in the first one

I played Tak 2 on a demo disc I recieved from EGM. In spite of it being a kids' game, I actually enjoyed the clean environments, funny sounds and hilarious characters. It's a pleasent escape from all the 'M'-rated games stacked up on my shelf. I actually consider buying it now that I have kids over my house alot. Keep them from playing my bloody games.

Ico. Just Ico. It's not a traditional platformer, but if you liked the puzzles from the original Tomb Raider, and you want a pure 3d platforming game, get Ico.
