Is there any way to change the order of Dr. Wily levels in the first Mega Man for NES? Like when you select Dr. Wily in the Stage Select screen, you'd only have to fight the Yellow Devil before Dr. Wily, and not the Copy Robot or CWU-01P.

Sorry for not getting to this post sooner; I hadn't noticed it until now.

I've never had a need to look into what determines what boss corresponds to what stage (though I do know that the stage ID is also used as the boss ID in that stage for all bosses beside the repeat bosses in the Wily stages); it's possible they all have their own IDs and can easily be switched by changing a couple bytes, but again, I just don't know. What you CAN do, though, is put in some code to (assuming you want to make the Wily section of the game be only TWO stages, as it sounds like you want to do) increase the stage ID number when you complete the first Wily stage to the ID for the last Wily stage, therefore bypassing the other 2 stages and their bosses. What normally happens is that you beat the Wily stage boss and the stage ID number is increased by one, but this can be fixed easily enough, since there's plenty of free space in the ROM for something like this and the code is simple. Just check for writes to $0031 when beating the first Wily stage and change that routine around to give the next stage the desired ID number.

On a side note, this thread is a perfect example of the very thing I find problematic about having an advanced ROM hacking forum. Questions like this that I can answer, for example, might go overlooked because the majority of the time the things in this forum are things I don't care about. This is something I can respond to and offer help on, but because this forum almost never has anything I find interesting or anything I wish to offer help on, I don't really visit it (read: this forum consists much of things like Super Mario World crap that I don't give a shit about). I feel it splits up the standard ROM hacking community. You want to have separate forums for different games that are getting an excessive number of threads? Fine. I don't, however, feel that a different forum is needed for 'advanced' things. Nothing is gained by splitting these up. The only exception I can understand is an exception for sophistocated programming-related things for ROM hacking and homebrew. If it's not a very in-depth assembly hack or something of that sort, it doesn't belong in this forum. Currently, it's not even very clear as to what is advanced. The description says using a hex editor is advanced. Yeah, right. I maintain that the basic hacking and advanced hacking subject areas should be merged back into one forum, or alternatively an assembly forum can be made. As it is, I feel the current setup decreases activity (I'd rather have the main hacking forum be busier; splitting it up only makes the forum slower and makes people check it less often) and makes it so that the people who can help won't necessarily see the question because they don't necessarily check BOTH of these hacking forums where a question that they could answer might pop up as a result of lesser interest in one of the forums.

This forum really should be removed, yeah. It was originally designed to divert good threads from being buried in SMW Hacking by the n00bs, but now that it's not even Advanced SMW Hacking anymore its purpose is lost and now we've got ROM hacking and SMW Hacking threads spread between the their forums and this forum and it's a bit of a mess.

This problem don't seem too advanced.

iamstillhiro/Glyph Phoenix: thank you for your absolutely useless posts.

The board of cool romhackers has spoken and decided this wasn't advanced et al. moveded. I have nothing useful to add to this thread.
