Sometimes, but a Rewind/FF key is used far more often.

I believe rewind is nothing more than a series of savestates kept in memory or some other spot. Something like that. Some emulators with these, such as newer ZSNES WIPs, don't like to have a lot of these states for some reason, and thus have somewhat limited rewind capabilities.

Savestates are essential for ROM Hacking. I do my best to never use them when actually playing a game, but when I get frustrated I can't help myself.

I use save states just because they're faster than going through the game menus to save and load. Not so much to save when you couldn't normally save. I try to avoid that.

Yes, I do use sav states. I, as many typical gamers, am very prone to stupid errors.

One game though, in which I really could have kicked myself in the butt, was Sumari (an NES pirate hack of sonic 1 that used mario as the main character instead). What made the game especially difficult was that even though Somari (Sonic/Mario) could carry up to 99 rings just like on the Genisis, the hardawre/ sprite limitations of the NES only allowed a maximum of 3 rings (sprites) to escape, causing me to instantly drop to almost nothing whenever I got hit. While I finally made it to the Boss without losing even a single ring, and only after about 35 minutes of F5 (save) & F7 (resume), I forgot to change the "state slot" on JNES from "default" to some other number (0-9) before I entered the Robotnik fight. Whenever I dodged getting hit by the "swinging ball", or after making a hit, I hit F5 to save. Right after the second hit on Robotnik (3 strikes he's out), I landed on the ground, hit F5 (save), and then immediately got smacked by the ball and died a quarter of a second later. I think I hit F7 (resume) like a dozen times after that, only to rewatch Somari "die" every time. Since the twirly thingy (level progress) either didn't work or was just for plain show in this pirate game, I was forced to start over from level 1 beginning, and I just said F*** it, and gave up.

So sometimes the save/resume feature can really come back to haunt you if you use them carelessly, hit wrong button, etc.

I use savestates much more than I should. Usually when I begin a new game, I swear to myself that I will not use them. However, it is usually not long before I save after completing a difficult part, so I won't have to do it again if I die. Before long, I find myself saving every five minutes, if not more frequently. Maybe I should make the savestate directory read-only so I'm forced to play it through normally .

All the time. I would never be able to beat any game without using them.

Well, when I experience hard levels in SMW, I use them... but I actually, mostly, use the rewind key.

I use them to get directly passed the menus in SMW and straight to the levels I'm testing/editing.

I use save states but I don't depend on it like an overused drug. I use them whenever I feel like saving quickly (Such as in an RPG Battle) or whenever I mess up. I just don't like using save states on VBA 'cuz I usually mess up. On ROM Hacking, save states are my friends.

Yeah I use a lot of savestates, but only when I am playing an SMW hack. About other games... sometimes. Using a savestate is a big spoiler to most of the games, but in some insanely hard hacks that's a wise choice so that you won't end up with "GAME OVER" or going mad

Yes, I use savestates a lot.

It doesn't help that I really suck at playing SNES games though. Strange though that when I play these games on the real thing I have no problems with difficulty
