ROM hacking requires the use of a lot of different tools to get results. So what I'm interested in is, what (non level-editor!) tools do you use? Hex editors, debuggers, graphics editors, you name it.

Personally, I use YY-CHR for graphics (and making AVG have a heart attack), and the free version of Cygnus for hex-work.

So, whadda you use?

I use Hex Workshop... Although it's not very stable on my comp, it crashes often... Also, it can't do wildcard searches, while they can be quite useful.
Looking for a hex editor that supports wildcard searches, I found 010 Editor... It doesn't have the flaws of Hex Workshop, but has other flaws instead: the program won't warn you if you shorten or expand the file size by mistake, and you can't copy the hex data on the left, it will simply copy the symbols on the right instead, if you know what I mean.

As for graphics, I do everything in an old program called The Games Factory (aka Klick and Play 2 or Click and Create), which is originally a program to make all kinds of games, not just graphics. I'm used to it and it lets you view animations, which is quite handy, especially since I'm working on a SMK hack, where animation matters a lot.

Hex editor: Hex Workshop
Emulator: ZSNES
Debugger: Geiger's Snes9x Debugger
Graphics editor: YY-CHR (Tile Molester for stuff unsupported by YY-CHR)
ASM hacking: Hex Workshop (Yeah!)
IPS patcher: Lunar IPS
SNES->PC->SNES: Lunar Address

It's not uncommon for me to make a program to view/hack things in a ROM. For instance, I've got a program which shows an entire SMW ROM as Layer 3 graphics, which is really practical when searching for Layer 3 data.

Following Smally's format:

Hex editor: XVI32, or the hex editor in Geiger's if need be.

Emulator: Snes9x

Debugger: Geiger's Snes9x Debugger

Graphics editor: Anything that works for my purposes. I like the look of Tile Layer Pro the most but it is prone to some weird bugs. Fatilety (sp?) is also pretty neat. YY-CHR seems like an unfriendly program to me. I just don't like the feel of it for some reason.

ASM hacking: xkas.exe. Hex editor for very minor testing edits.

IPS patcher: Boo to ips patches, but if I need to use one I use LIPS, or I let the emulator I'm using autopatch which is actually way easier than trying to apply a stupid patch.

SNES->PC->SNES: My brain. Yes, I do it that often that using a tool would actually slow me down.

I like Translhextion. It has a nasty memory leak where it crashes if you extend the file by much, there's a little square of glitched graphics that appears where your cursor is sometimes, and it only shows up for me when maximized. However, I use roms where you can't extend the file so easily, The little square is only a mild annoyance, and I tend to maximize my program windows anyway.

XVI32 worked for me, and it has wildcard searches. I intended to switch to XVI32, but its inability to extend files simply at all (even the defualt empty file) combined with the bizarre allure of Translhextion's colorful GUI turned me back. (XVI32 has wildcard searching, if Stifu or anybody else cares.)

For graphics, YY-CHR FTW.

I'll check it out...
Ok Impala! (my hacking partner, for those who don't know) uses Winhex, which allows wildcard searches too... I think I didn't like that program very much, but I don't remember why, I'll have to try it again. I yet have to find a hex editor that suits me totally...

Um... XVI32 can extend files. You need to hit the "insert" key for it to activate though. You can also use the insert string feature to pad in extra bytes from any location, regardless of whether you are in insert mode. The default empty "file" cannot be written to until you choose File->New, thus declaring it as a file and not an empty control.

I see. Well, it still doesn't have hypnotic red and blue patterened text or Magus as an icon. My hexadecimal editing needs are complicated and involve the king of monsters adorning my task bar.

Alternately, I'm just too lazy to switch. Whichever explanation is acceptable to you is the correct one.

Hehe.

Good ol HexEdit. Certainly a wonderful Hex Editor. I basically use it for everything I do, as I'm not much of a graphicy person. And of course, Boycott Advance 0.2.6 (It's an old version, but it runs about 3x as fast on my old laptop).

Mac Hacking yay.

Transhexlation, ZSNES, YY-CHR, and... well, that's about it. I would use Lunar Address for ASM hacking, but I keep forgetting to download it...

For hex editing, I use Hexposure. For graphics, I use Tile Layer sometimes but mostly stick to Nesticle. IPS patching, if I ever get around to completing something enough to mess with it, is done with SNEStool.

And yes, I'm running an older system, for those wondering.

FCEUXD for my debugging, hex editing, hacking purposes.
Tile Layer Pro for desiging my levels
And Lunar IPS for making backup patches. I used to use SNES Tool ever since until I expanded my mm3 rom and it would screw it up .....that's when i switched to lunar ips ...and i don't have those problems anymore.

Hex Editor: WindHex32
Tile Editor: YY-CHR

That's it, other than that they're all game-specific or rarely used.

I thought it was because you're a sick, twisted, evil bastard. I mean, come on, you like Jigglypuff (apparently), wtf!?

Hex Editor: Translhextion
Graphics: TLP
IPS Patcher: Lunar IPS
Everything else: Game-specific, and I even try to avoid the hex editor. I'm not really a dedicated rom hacker, obviously, I just toy around with shit when I feel like it.
