Don't be afraid to judge, and do not be afraid to be judged.

In every decision, every choice in your life, you make judgements. Positive and negative judgements that reveal just a little bit about your character and about your mind.

Each false move you make betrays your soul to all those around you who bear open eyes. By watching carefully the decisions and judgements of others, you can determine their worth as a person, and, more importantly, their motives, mind, and drive.

But almost all of you have been taught to close your eyes to judging others, so that you would not be judged as well. This begs the question- In a room of honest people, who but a theif would ask for them to close their eyes? Who but a liar would ask for them to forget their judgement? What soul other than one completely decayed from corruption would beg to bypass judgement?

Who wins when you withhold judgement?

This is indeed a good point, except that you may be oversimplifying the situation.

My understanding was not to ignore what others do, which is what you seem to suggest it means, but rather that "don't judge people" refers more to looking at them first as people, as equal human beings deserving of respect, rather than wrongdoers of sorts. You might condemn their actions, but don't condemn them as people when you do so.

That's how I've always understood it, and it's not quite so bad when you see it that way.

Well... first things first: That's not begging the question. The term you want is raising the question, if anything.

The point of avoiding judgment deals more with the irrational knee-jerk reaction that a lot of people have when presented with certain things. If you hear about someone being a criminal, would you not assume that they're bad people? What about the ones who merely made mistakes, or did things needed in order to survive. A felonious robber isn't always one who broke into a bank and stole all of the money, it could just be one who stole small goods three times. Or, a felon in general could be someone who forgot something in their car when they went to school.

The point is not to pass judgment without all the relevent information.

If you judge someone, expect them to judge you back. All it helps is make insensitive people feel more secure.

If the point of the saying, "Do not judge" were to get rid of prejudice, then why doesn't it simply say, "Don't be prejudiced"?

Rom- You are using the word 'judge' as it had only a negative implication. you judge people all the time. By saying, "This person is my friend", you are judging them. By choosing to hang out with one person over another, you are judging.

You're trying to change the meaning of judge here...

1. To form an opinion or estimation of after careful consideration: judge heights; judging character.
2.
1. Law. To hear and decide on in a court of law; try: judge a case.
2. Obsolete. To pass sentence on; condemn.
3. To act as one appointed to decide the winners of: judge an essay contest.
3. To determine or declare after consideration or deliberation.
4. Informal. To have as an opinion or assumption; suppose: I judge you're right.
5. Bible. To govern; rule. Used of an ancient Israelite leader.

Yeah...

To call someone your friend is just describing the relationship between you to others. It isn't judging them.

That is the definiton of judge which I am using.

And I hope that it would be judging them to be calling them your friend; after all, you wouldn't call someone devoid of any value a friend, would you?

I uh... bolded part of my post for a reason...

When people say don't judge, they learn that from the bible, or from someone who learned it from the bible.

Make all the judgements you want, and evaluate the world as you will, but do so in silence.

Seek not to crow of your virtue by decrying the faults and deficiencies of others, nor castigate them as though you were their parent and they your child, but merely act on the knowledge of their vices as you must.

Why does it strike me that this particular one is the definition that's used for the whole "Judge not lest ye be judged" thing?
