Japanese ROM hackers have been doing some amazing stuff with Rockman and Mega Man hacking for quite a while now. I just visited Kuwata's site again recently and saw that there's a fairly new RM2 hack called Rockman Exhaust which is pretty cool. Screenshots can be seen on Kuwata's Japanese homepage and the hack can be downloaded from this page on Dhi's site. The hack is really quite neat. It has new music and graphics and whatnot and extensive edits of most everything in the game. I did encounter a bug where Bubble Man lodged himself in the ceiling and I had to reset the game, but overall it's been a really fun hack. There are also some other cool looking Rockman hacks on his site I've not yet gotten around to trying, like Rockman RX, whicn seems very promising.

What do people think of these hacks? I'm having a lot of fun playing through Rockman Exhaust right now. It's very well done, and Quick Man's stage is the coolest thing ever.

Funny you mention that, I just found out about this yesterday as a matter of fact, i've already finished playing entirly through exhaust, and it's superior to Rockman Exile.

I loved seeing how some enemies looked exactly like they were off kirby games on Crashman. Generally speaking, the main bad guy of those games found throughout the stage a few times spitting out bullets constantly. hehe

that thing is awsome too, except that it's just got a very minor strange glitch showing megamans face 10 times or so every couple seconds, but it's still fun though.
I could tell that originally was the giant blue dog that was found 3 times in the woodman stage.

i really digged the music on most stages too

I'm keeping the IPS patch on my comp for this one.

Based on the screenies, I think this will be fun. I wish they made SMB3 hacks like these .

I'll have to try it when I get home tonight.

There are more here also.

I'm surprised no one has tried hacking in Time Man and/or Oil Man into the original Mega Man game while keeping the original six Robot Masters there.

It's like Kirby and Megaman got together, had a monstrous cross-breed, tried adoption instead, and got the most beautiful baby in daycare. God, this is awsome with a capital S! =D

Be my guest.

I'm surprised that you're surprised no one has done this. You think something like that is easy? The boss select screen has to be redone (I'm pretty sure it has some wonky hardcoded format), the new graphics need to be made and inserted somewhere in the first $10000 bytes of the ROM (unless you want to rewrite the graphics engine), more level slots need to be made, new music has to be composed and inserted, and the bosses need to be programmed in. Yeah, I'm really surprised no one has done this yet. This is no easy task. There's no space in the original ROM for 2 more levels (maybe for 1, if you reuse graphics from elsewhere in the game), no space for all of those graphics, little space for music, etc etc. If you want to expand the ROM, you'd need to rearrange TONS of the original ROM in order to put those bosses and their levels into the game. It's not worth it. At all.

[Blah blah]

That's why it's smarter to use Rockman 2 as the base ROM instead.

A bit on the ludicriously difficult side...wayy harder than the original RM2..but very entertaining nonetheless. That Kirby level is inspiring.

You guys need Rockman ROMS. These patches are not compatible with Megaman ROMS. I did have Rockman1 ROM for the first one but the second one I need to find it (Already found it). Play the first one and I believe that GutsMan level is been altered as an upward level and not downwards. How do they do it?

Anyway already beaten 2 bosses, BombMan and GutsMan and using NESticle for my save state.

Uh, well, if you don't have a slow computer, there's really no reason you should be using NESticle. In fact, you should delete that emulator off of your computer. It's crappy and ONLY good for its speed on slow machines. There are so many better emulators nowadays; there is no excuse for using that outdated program.

As for how they do it, it's easy. Not only do both visine and Rock 'n Roll have support for editing scroll, but the format is beyond simple. Each corridor is defined by a single byte, where a few of the bits define direction and the rest define the number of screens to the scroll. Making it a vertical level requires only changing a few bits in easy to locate data.

My computer is a bit slow but not much and can't run FCE Ultra without directX 8.0 and higher. It's too bad that the download is large and unable to play with the FCE Ultra. In other words, the .dll files won't work without them either.

NesterJ or RockNES v1.7 and higher are my best bets. I only use NESticle for MegaMan games and nothing else.

Every time i find any japanese website containing data for any rockman/megaman game...i try to use many online translators and most everything does a bad job.

google is the WORST choice for translating japanese.
worldlingo is the only website that does a "decent" job in my opinion

That hack was SO cool. Up to Wily level already but having trouble with FlashMan level. CrashMan level reminds me of the DarkNecrobat level (1st Part) from MegamanX5 I played regarding the Kirby Sprites. I've never stop playing a second or two.

Heh. I've really come to like this hack in the week-and-a-half I've had it. It looks a bit odd, yes, but plays pretty well, with a nice difficulty.

Video I made of myself playing through the hack, just for the hell of it (and maybe help anyone that got stuck at a choke point, like THAT DAMN HARD LASER SECTION THAT WAS SO CRUELLY PUT IN FLASHMAN'S LEVEL, ENSURING THAT YOU CAN'T TIME-FREEZE IT. YARGLBF).

Made using NESVideos' modified FCEU 0.98.15, but no slowdown or savestates were used; this was just an uncut playaround, basically.

(I did use autofire, though...that should be obvious during the Sniper Joe fights. )

Oh, and feel free to shoot me in the nuts with a fully-powered Mega Buster blast for not recognizing the Cave Story balcony tune until Valcion brought it up, despite immediately noticing the ripped Sacred Grounds blocks in the last level the first time I played the hack. D'OH.

Well I enjoyed watching your play through the game. I watched the entire thing.
The bubbleman fight (first time) was funny the fact that you killed him, and yourself at the same time. Then he got stuck in the ceiling so you had to die again. hehe.

And yea the lazer part in flashman is ridculously hard. Took me like 30 tries to get through that part.

The hack has, in my opinion, too many cheap parts. For example, though most of Wily 1 had very clever use of items, the very beginning was near impossible and definitely not something that could ever be beaten by anyone, regardless of skill, their first time through. The Flash Man beam segment is like that, as well. I feel that this hack crosses a fine line regarding difficulty; this hack is hard, but at times it simply becomes cheap, and I think it suffers as a result. If a segment can't potentially be beaten in one's first attempt (barring sheer luck), then it is cheap and should be fixed. One should never be put into a position where you have to have prior knowledge about a section to complete to complete that section. That's bad design, plain and simple.

I was very impressed with what was done with the Wily 4 boss. I disliked the original boss because of its reliance on the player having a lot of Crash energy. The Wily 4 boss in this hack was very creative, in my opinion, and definitely an interesting technical feat. Kudos to Dhi for that.

I pretty much like it too. But it was fun. And the Wily level storyline is quite good as well. The last level gave a surprise that MegaMan found out the secret entrance to Wily's control room.
