I'm not sure if this fits in Rom Hacking or General Emulation, but it doesn't really fit here. *Moves to Rom Hacking*

Zsnes has the option of ripping the current sound track that is playing. If I recall correctly, you press F1 and there should be an option for ripping the SPC or something of that sort. Kepe in mind that you need to do this right at the beginning fo the song, since everything that occurs before you rip the SPC won't be included on the track.

I haven't ripped an SPC in a long while, though, so maybe it's changed since then?

Actually you do it just BEFORE the song starts playing.

.spc files, very much like the ROMs you play, are a kind of ROMs themselves. Particularly, they are dumps of the memory/processor state of the SPC-700, the SNES' sound coprocessor, which, as suggested, is a separate processor that controls a Sony-made DSP to output the sound.

Depending on the game, an SPC dump can contain all or parts of the "music data" in it, along with the code to play it back.

I think SPCs are perfectly legal, since they are hosted on Zophar's Domain as well - although I never understood what actually is the difference between these and the MP3 format (like if you converted an existing SPC to MP3 with Winamp's DiskWriter plugin directly), concerning the fact "legal" and "illegal". I have no clue about the technical thing, but maybe the "engine" (the plugin itself) is slightly similar to MIDI and the SPCs just contain the data - of course both formats are completely different ...

You can get everything with ZSNES' ripping method, only in Tales of Phantasia you won't be able to get the voice of the title song, since I think it actually is a huge/long sound effect (?) - as only the background music will be recorded. But usually it is easier to download them via the mentioned snesmusic.org homepage. The nice thing is the easy way to make SPCs play forever - so you can listen to youe favourite song as long as you like

I would imagine since they are copyrighted works they are just as illegal to download. But then again if you have the music, you more then likely have the rom. Stealing the same thing twice (the music engine/data) is irrelevant and is such a small portion of the game itself that I think companies just let it slide. I also think there's much less demand for music files versus actual rom images. So less demand = less attention from authorities.

It's more like the music files can't really be used to pirate games so the authorities don't care.

Yeah well the game companies still have rights to the music. Just think about all the RPGs that have had OSTs released. That's a cut of the profits, albeit a small one.
