| In the United States, ALS is often called Lou Gehrig's disease because of New York Yankees' star Lou Gehrig, who was diagnosed with ALS in the 1930s.
You may or may have not heard of this. Its a semi-famous disease that Stephen Hawking was diagnosed with over 40 years ago, and the success rate of anyone living even past 10 years is almost unheard of. The chance of anyone even having this disease is 2 out of 100,000 people. Today I have learned they my mom was diagnosed with it. I've been crying even since. My mom is really the only family I have left. My grandparent died over 10 years ago and I have a sister the lives pretty far from me and I hearldy ever see her. I always though of my mom as one of those people I would never lose...until now. I have no idea how to even handle this. I'm terrified. I don't want her to go....not now. There is so much I still want to do with her. My gf is pregent again and I want my kids to at least be old enough to know there grandma... I got million things going though my mind right now... | Well I don't want to doubt the skill of your mother's doctors but perhaps you should get a second opinion if you haven't already done so? Diagnosis of a terminal illness is very hard for everybody involved (family, the patient, friends.)
Aside from that, I wish you the best of strength in coping with this. If i may ask, what is the cause of this disease? Viral / bacterial / something genetic? |

| Speaking as somebody who has lost a parent, and has regrets because of it -- make sure to support your mother.
I was a kid when I lost my Dad, I didn't understand what was wrong, why he was sick, and I drew away from him. I don't even remember it being a conscious thought or anything, I guess it's just what kids do, but I feel horrible for it now. Make sure to give your mother all your love and support. And try to be strong for her. |

I have a friend of mine with some chronic disesae I forgot the name of... where muscles keeps getting weaker but I know for sure it's not ALS. He was diagnoised when he was six years old, and he kept getting worse over the years. He's twenty years now though, and I kind of lost touch with him. People with his disease usually die around their 20's. I'm starting to feel really bad about it nowdays, as I almost never see him. 
Give her the support she needs, while there's no real treatment yet (there might be something in the next decade, or next few years), sheer willpower might be one of the reasons why Stephen Hawking been able to live with his disease for 40 years. I would try to suggest you to think optimistic, give your mother hope and a reason to live, and yourself too. (Even my parents, who both works at a hospital says that sheer willpower is the best treatment.) |

| To some people this may sound weird.... But I have known Paul 13+ years...
I would do what MathOnNapkins said and get a second opinion. Your mom is a strong woman and im sure she will be just fine. Im always there for you Paul. You can call me if you wanna talk... I hope all goes well man! |

| That's horrible news, man.
Just try your best to stay strong, and give her all the support you can. Don't let the disease put a limit on her life or yours, she can be the next miracle. And like others have suggested, get a second opinion. No doctor is ever always right. |
