You ever watch a movie that everyone said was great? Maybe its a classic or it won an award, or the critics went on and on about how great it is. And it wasn't good at all?
The most annoying part about movies like this is that if you try to give your opinion on them, people tell you you didn't get it, and act like you're some kind of idiot for not liking something everyone else did. Although, admittedly there are times when people actually don't get a great movie that they're bashing.
Many times, though, it seems like everyone only says a movie is great because they don't want to come off as the idiot who didn't get it (kind of an "Emperor's New Clothes" type of thing).
So what are some movie you don't think deserve to be called great, but are anyway?

I didn't "get" Napoleon Dynamite.

I tried to, but I just... didn't get it. It was amusing, but I really can't get how it's so... "great" like a few people think it is.

Titanic was awful, i thought.

Also, The Grudge made me laugh more than anything. I don't know why everybody I know though that it was the "greatest horror film ever".

The Nic already mentioned it but Titanic was overrated. I don't get the hype. I simply don't. The Oscars it won don't shock me as much as how much it made in the boxoffice.

I agree very strongly with the two already brought up, as they are my two textbook examples of overrated movies at this point.

Napoleon Dynamite was amusing, this is true. But it was hardly hilarious, hardly brilliant, hardly anything really notable. And I really didn't like Titanic much at all.

Those are the two that I can think of off the top of my head, but there are certainly some others deserving of the dubious honor of being known as the most overrated ones. Good Will Hunting comes to mind for me.

Labyrinth... The only argument that I ever seem to hear about this movie is from is from teenage girls (mainly those drama club, theatrical types) stating this and only this: But it's David Bowe... in tights.

That is at least a third of the reason why it sucks.

Oh... and Rocky Horror Picture Show + Greese = Overrated.

I don't have a damn thing against mussicals, just these movies.

Ghost in the Shell was severely overrated also. I really tried to like that stupid ass movie, but I really couldn't. At least Akira was good. Even if the manga was vastly superior.

Really, Good Will Hunting, I guess it's agree to disagree cause I most definately love that movie.

The one that I always thought was overrated was Gone With The Wind. It was a good movie, but in no way would I consider it the greatest movie ever made or anywhere near that. Maybe it's just because I can in no way relate to the story.

Good to see I'm not alone. GITS was a complete utter mess. I liked Akira a lot, but it still wasn't anything "amazing".

I agree with The Grudge also. That was probably one of the dumbest movies I've ever seen. Was it a comedy, or thriller?

Both Kill Bill movies are also INSANELY overated. I have no idea what the big deal is / was about those two movies.

Oh, and the films of Kubrick. Spartacus, Clockwork Orange, Eyes Wide Shut, Full Metal Jacket, etc. way too over rated.

Scarface. I mean, it was a good movie, but it seems to be talked about a lot more than it did when it was actualy new. Same with Fight Club: most people have never even seen it, but they go around boasting about how great of a movie it is, and ranting on and on about it's memorable quotes ("We don't talk about fight club").

Let's see, the list of the stupid ass movies that I never got why they were so popular..

Napoleon Dynamite, I never got what was so funny about that movie. Usually I have a good sense of humor with a lot of things but..yeah this movie didn't do anything for me but just waste my precious time.

The ring and the Grudge weren't scary for anything. I laughed at the Grudge because when I watched it my friend got scared and I was like okay..

The Blair witch project..HA my parents and me and my sister saw it at a drive in (I was young) and that movie was stupid as hell.

Scarface was pretty cool actually, yeah, I don't know why they made such a big deal of it either but it was a decent movie but not like OMG LETS WATCH THAT AGAIN.

The first Kill Bill was the shit, the second, not so much. I needed that continous action to stay interested. I should watch the second one again though..I kind of forgot what went on ..

Many overrated movies out there. Many of my choice opinions already stated.

Ghost in the Shell, I've tried to watch this, I get bored out of my mind at how stupid it is.

Napolean Dynamite, this was funny, but I wasn't laughing with the people in it only at them.

Titanic, I can kinda see why people like it but even then I don't see how great it was, it had a good scene or two, but not very great.

Saw and Saw 2, I know I might get my head cut off for saying this one, but I hate these movies so bad. In my opinion two of the worst movies I've ever seen.

I'll say this after saying those movies. If anyone thinks differently and thinks I'm wrong, I could honestly care less what you think. But anyway, seems not everyone's alone on their opinions.

Most of those movies were widely panned critically. Even a piece of shit can do well commercially. If they did okay at the theatre doesn't mean that they are over-rated. Rather, it simply means that people are idiots. Very few of the movies in your list have any critical supporters.

Of course, the majority of this board has a disimal command over understanding film. So I'll reserve any critiques and mentions of technique for people that are better equipped to understand them.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (the 2005 movie). The first twenty minutes were great, but it went way downhill from there. I was expecting a garishly entertaining black humor film reminiscent of Beetlejuice. (Wacky devices, a highly disturbed and amusing master of ceremonies...) I got piece after piece of spoonfed slapstick (look, kids, Mr. Wonka ran into the glass elevator AGAIN!) and meant-to-be-funny lines that did nothing for me at all. Nuts? Grass? Golly, I would have never thought of those double entendres! The Wonka character was completely unlikable - rude and annoying without any brains or competence to back it up - which wrecked the experience as well. It would have been much better if he'd been snarky and intelligent with the occasional "Heeeee!" or "y helo thar I just fell off the short bus". I didn't get much out of the original Roald Dahl lyrics in the Oompa Loompa songs because I could barely understand them. I don't know if it was the theater or the copy of the movie, but I heard that this was a common problem. (I do know it wasn't me. Many other reviewers mentioned this issue, and Rando couldn't make out the lyrics, either.) I can read them out of the book, but it's not the same. Without any comprehensible words, the song sequences dragged.

I do give them credit for making Augustus and Violet fun to hate. Augustus in the 1971 Wonka movie was chubby and slightly rude, and that was it...not really deserving of being made into fudge. 1971 Violet was more amusing than annoying. This Augustus was a nasty little slug, and Violet (and her mom! EWWWW) were a plasticine nightmare.

Awwww, Pop, does this mean you aren't going to take me to Little League this year? Even if I clean out the garage and mow the lawn every week all summer?

On the subject of Napoleon Dynamite...I can see where both camps are coming from. When I first saw it, I'd heard it was going to be OMG HILARIOUS. It was mildly amusing with a couple of good scenes (like when Napoleon's uncle was trying to sell stuff to Rex Kwon Do's wife, and Rex came back to the house), and I thought "That was it?" But...for some reason, it's fun to talk about and quote, and thus, I think it's growing on me. An annoyed "GAWWWD!" doesn't stand alone as a gem of amusement, but it's fun to say with friends. Lines like that sometimes amuse me more than they should. I'm still not tired of "LeeROY...JEEEEENKINS!"
