I first played pokemon in 99' when I was 14; i loved it! Never been introduced to turn-based fighting before, and having 150 characters to add to your "team" was so fun. It got a tiny bit boring; then Gold and Silver came out; it was the best ever, with all new features like: Rebattling, Breeding, and Time of day. I liked Crystal the next year, but it was nothing extravagant; I later got hooked on Pokemon Stadium 2, and thought to being a really good trainer would be to have all 251 raised to level 100 with the best stats you can have, and all good moves. It got boring on me...
time passed... time passed... and time passed. Then here came Ruby and Sapphire! Whoa! Really fun! Way more Pokemon, and the best graphics ever, so now I'm 18 at this time, and I steal my little bro's Ruby and play my own (I know I'm mean). Couple years later here was remakes of Red and Blue; I bought it and was immediately bored; and I thought sincerely I was through with pokemon, but now I've picked up Fire Red again; now I'm finding myself playing it all day long. It's sickening!

Point of this thread: I can't escape the love I have for the Pokemon games; Even when I go through my "off-seasons" I'll be back on it again playing it. I can't wait for Diamond and Pearl to come out. We can't escape it, once we've been introduced to it we can't go back! Does anyone else have an unhealthy grasp on this series?

Well, I've always thought that despite what some people say about the Pokemon franchise itself, the main series is a very good RPG. I can see people not touching the cartoon or merchandise with a 20-foot pole, yet still picking up the latest games in the series.

Okay. At first I was all into the game and show.

Time passed. I started to hate the show but still played the game.

Point is. The games are enjoyable. I loved playing through Blue, Yellow and Silver but, the newer games didn't intrigue me. Not that they are bad, but I guess the whole 'catch 'em all' mentality wore off on me.

The "catch em' all" thing isn't what grabs me about the games. Let's act like they ae not silly creatures; instead lets put a picture in our minds as them being warrior men and women, something like Final Fantasy type characters, now convert they're characteristics( i.e. Pikachu into a semi-strong Thunder Knight) and you got a pretty cool style of gameplay, cool huh?

I love these games. Fuckin' love 'em.
Started playing Blue back in '99, loved it. Played Silver in '00, loved it as well.
Then when I was around 15-16 I started despising Pokemon, only because everyone else did, then I forgot about the whole damn series until the later half of Junior Year when I got into NetBattle. I immediately ran out and bought Pokemon Red, Silver, Emerald, a Gameboy Color and a Link cable, and I just got Crystal. I'm a born-again Pokemaniac

Well gee, if that's the kind of thing you like, I recommend the two Final Fantasy Tactics games (original for PSX, inferior sequel for GBA) as well as the Fire Emblem games. You get to build up a similar force, and battle with them. Granted, it's strategy as opposed to just normal fights, but with a wonderful level of customization available.

I uhh, didn't suffer that. I just got horribly bored after the original Red, I tried to play other ones, but they weren't fun, they were redundant...

It's just the same principle every time you battle, it gets annoying.

Strategy RPGs have the tendency to suck, though. There are way better TBS games out there. Advance Wars, for one.

Whether or not they have the tendancy to suck, Final Fantasy Tactics is a truly wonderful game. FFTA, while not nearly as good as the original, is still a superb game. Fire Emblem...I've not played too much of, but it comes highly recommended, and I've liked what I've played of it.

But yes, Advance Wars is great.

I dunno, I really don't like them. I just found them tedious.

And the Fire Emblem series. Especially the ones that never made it over. I've played many of them, and the system is just appalling. There's just not a whole lot you can do outside of basic elements of strategy and the stories are never worth reading, y'know?

Fire Emblem, the first that made it over, was alright at the beginning, but my experience turned really sour around mission 20 or so.

Well, I've just started with The Sacred Stones, and been too busy with other things to play much more of it. I loved FFT and FFTA, though. But obviously that kind of thing isn't for everyone.

That's why there are lots of kinds of games, after all.

Eh. I just... Hate that sort of game.

Pokemon, as a game, too, has also died on me. I've always been much more interested in the battles than anything else; this is why I only did netbattle.

I really got tired of Pokemon quickly. And it's something about it that makes me wonder about Suikoden as well...just a bit too many characters to care about, such that in the end you care about almost none. Same with Chrono Cross.

Well yeah. Catching them all is kinda stupid, but, the battles are strategic. You don't need to manage too many... But, you have options, and that's good. You only really need to manage six.

Remember Disgaea? Fucking awesome. And Skydude loses points for not mentioning Tactics Ogre.

Pokémon is a slow reacting drug. You get your need for it a while after the highs of playing. Man, Elite Four blows now Onix is a Steelix. :/ (I own Fire Red)

Giga Drain = <3
Current record damage multiplier: 16x, Max is 24x. (I gotta use hydro cannon and get a critical hit on a rock/ground type some time with low HP.)

That's nothing.

I once took out an entire six-poke team - all at level 100 - over the course of one turn.

The games are fun, but I really haven't enjoyed any after G/S. Ru/Sa just aren't as amusing (still beat them though ); the amount of Pokémon is ridiculous, types and move sets seem poorly balanced, the AI is way cheap and the random number generator seems to be flawed (just keep running into the same Pokémon over and over, missing again and again, doing the same amount of damage every time etc). I'm playing through the original Red again, it's quite amusing really.

Also the AI cheats in Stadium. Not sure about Stadium 2.
