A good place to start at

Also, please post SMW Hacking questions in the SMW Hacking forum.

Moved to SMW hacking. You might have better chances to get a reply there.

edit: Additionally, there's plenty of newbie guides in that forum.

Lunar Magic's the best SMW hacking utility out there for newbs. It's user-friendly and you can do a lot to the levels and tile behaviors without even knowing ASM (which is great because I'm not a programmer). I wouldn't suggest messing with the overworld on your first hack (beyond palette-swapping. OW editing is really tricky if you're not a technical kind of person. You could change some things that aren't affected by events (i.e. parts of the overworld that don't change when you pass a level). Mario World Reconfigurator is a good program for tweaking sprite behavior. I only used it to make the goombas squishy.

-POINT OF ADVICE-
Don't expect your first hack to get a good review. There are some jerkwads on this board. This may be because I do all my work in Lunar Magic though.

BTW, you can find Lunar Magic on SMW Central in the Tools section.

I don't know what kind of SMW hacking you want to do (there are many different types, and 'making my own levels' is a little vague) . . .

If you know nothing about programming, and have no interest in learning . . . well as mentioned above Lunar Magic is the tool for you.

If you are a programmer, and you like to get your hands dirty and tinker then I suggest you get a emulator with a good debugger (I use BSNES, it is a slow emulator but I like the debugger as amoung its other features it lets you step by frame which is great when trying to locate sub-routines). There are plenty of good documents linked to from SMWCentral if you are not familiar with the specific instruction sets.

Most importantly, or usefully, though is these forums . . . I am a long time programmer, but new to SMW-hacking, and I have found these forums a great resource. As long as you word your questions sensibly and politely, they will get answered by one of the great veterans.

But apart from that, welcome to SMW-hacking . . . it is great; not quite as great as Elder Scrolls IV which is consuming all my free time since I got it a few days ago; but still pretty great (:

My advice to is, you should play a good assortment of hacks available to kind of get the "feel" of where you might like to be, as far as SMW hacking goes.

Okay, that's painfully wrong. Your palette choices were awful, your level design was annoying, there were lots of glitches, and a great deal of areas were hardly changed compared to the original. Bad choices lead to bad hacks, not bad tools.

In addition, not every first hack is bad. JAMH is Juggling Joker's first hack and it would seem to be quite popular. I'd also have to say that I'd rather be the jerkwad who criticizes a bad hack than the jerkwad who makes the bad hack and proceeds to spam about quitting hacking.

-POINT OF ADVICE-
Don't post until you get a better grasp on reality.

As for you, Andreicecold, my advice is to pay attention to gameplay. You know why Super Mario Brothers the original was popular? Primarily, it was because it played well. Fancy graphics or code hacks mean little without good gameplay.

That is well put, about the actual gameplay as opposed to the new GFX all the time. New GFX seems to be all the hype right now, but what I've done is I took the same ol' SMAS GFX, and worked around with it a bit and I changed palettes to look unique; it was well liked too.

Finally being paid to code in VB! If only I still enjoyed that. <_<
