Janus: "I'll tell you why..."

Janus' eyes grew dark, and another shock of Chaos Energy flew through Schwa's body, implanting everything Janus knew into his head... There was a voice, imperceptible to all but Schwa...

Janus: 'It's all your fault, Schwa. All your fault that I've been in the Aether for so long, forced to endure a torture beyond that of any I've ever experienced. I never knew pain could be so vivid, but the Aether taught me that. And why? Because of emotion.

That woman and I, when I left that bastard Grey and the corruption he was besetting upon my friends, we met. Instantly, like nothing in the hundreds of thousands of years I lived, I felt something for her. I saved her life several times, and she mine, and together we traveled across a fantastical country filled with incredible sights the likes of which I had never seen. I had been shown a whole new world of magic and fantasy, and it was all because of her.

But YOU, Schwa, you had to go and interfere with it all! Don't you remember? The Royal Ball and the Ring of the Prince that I once showed you? You gave me both of those things, all the while idly forgetting the one single most important part of the Psi Warrior faith: The Soul.

You KNOW, Schwa, you know that my soul is not in my body. You're one of the few people who does know. It's the reason for my longevity: my soul never dies, and as a result my body never permanently leaves this world. But you, who infused me with the power of the Life Aspects, failed to see that the catalyst for them was never once present.

Soul and Psi are symbiotes, Schwa. One cannot exist without the other when the two meet. Your power and your soul are the two most important parts of your being, and the two feed off of each other to strengthen themselves and drive you ever higher and higher. You learned that when you took the Psi Warrior oath.

But you neglected to realize what happens when the Psi interacts with a being that is not of your own: a being whose soul is not within itself.

Satchel, Satchel is where my soul is. As the Psi cannot penetrate his powerful magic, he acts as a phylactery, which in effect makes me almost like a Lich. Dead, but still alive. As a result, the Psi that you infused me with, for even touching something with the force of Psi within it imbues its indulgent with some form of its power, had no soul within the host to feed off of and in turn strengthen. My body began to fade from this world as I showed more of what fuels a Psi Warrior's power. As I began to show true emotion. What a punishment I would serve for doing something that felt so right, hm?

I never got to tell her how I felt, Schwa. I never got to tell her, for right as I was about to, the power of my emotions peaked, and the Aether itself came to take what it had coming to it: A body that refused to adhere to the cycle of the Life Aspects.

I held onto her with all of my might, you know. Even with a strength as great as mine, and a will that could never be forsaken, I was still torn from her. How dare you. How dare you take that from me...

It doesn't matter now. Even to see Yiusi again would hurt my heart too much... Instead, I'm going to exact vengeance upon you...'

The instant had passed, and Schwa was granted his parting gift, a shock of knowledge from a new adversary. Janus raised his free hand, gathering Chaos Energy into his palm as his voice, full of hate and anger, rang out among the palace walls...

"Vengeance, vengeance against you and all of your---"

Evan: "Chaos Spear!!!"

Completely ignoring Shen's final words to him, Evan made a suicide leap through the outer wall of Crystal Psipalace, crashing through the diamond stone with the force of a tactical missile. The wall exploded outward as Evan, surrounded in the same purple energy as Janus, hurled a spear of bright violet light at the psychotic villain, impaling his side in what appeared to be a solid ray of energy. Janus' grip on Schwa was almost instantly released, and he fell to the ground, badly wounded.

Evan stopped short in front of Schwa, and stood between him and Janus.

Evan: "Leave this place! Now, all of you!"

By the time Evan had finished his desperate plea, Janus had gotten to his feet, a being that radiated unrefined power from the Void and Chaos. He drew his hammer, and said only one word.

Janus: "You!"

Evan: "Me!"

Janus dashed forward, swinging his hammer madly with a force that could shatter mountains! Evan threw up his arms and grabbed the hammer's head, using all of his incredible strength to keep its massive weight from crushing his head... The enraged Janus continued his assault, pulling the hammer away and smashing again and again at Evan, only to be blocked and trapped each time.

Janus: "I'll kill you! I'll destroy you and all that you mean!"

Evan continued to parry and grab, but was clearly feeling the effects of the Chaos Energy that surged through his body with every blow. His final pleas were desperate...

Evan: "Please! .... All of you! Get out..."

Finally, Evan saw an opening, bringing a gigantic fist through Janus' defenses and bashing him square in the chest. The youthful nemesis flew backwards through wall after wall of pure crystal, until finally landing several hundred feet inside of the palace. He took a quick glance at his surroundings, and suddenly realized that there was an even better reason for him to be here than to just kill Schwa...

Schwa is speechless at the info he receives. As Evan makes his appearance and his plea, he stares hopefully at Sensae for advice, and Sensae smiles, nods and motions with his hand. "Go, child."

Schwa turns at once and dives off the edge of the Palace, summoning a Psi Disc in the process and flying the hell outta there.

"Origin, all will be well. Do not worry about me, follow your heart," is Sensae's reply to Origin, his telepathy reaching across thousands of miles effortlessly.

As Schwa flies away, something in the air almost runs into him.
"Whoa!!"

"Aaaaaaaa!!"

"Allaura, follow me, NOW. Do not approach the Palace!"

"Hah, I knew something awful was going on." Allaura the Psi Warrior joins Schwa in his flight from the Palace. "Figures! I just finish a battle against an other-worldly magicain and Crystal Psipalace is in danger. Who'd be strong enough to take on Sensae, though?"

"Janus. And it's not Sensae he's after-- it's me, actually."

"Janus!? ...YOU!? No way!"

"Uh-huh. It's hard to explain, though... VERY hard. Just trust me when I say we'll need more power-- and the help of that Evan guy."

"Evan? ...I think you told me something about him once. How's HE involved, though?"

"I have NO idea. I have some ideas, though..."

They swoop low to the ground, flying in and out of trees in a thick forest. Should Janus recover from Evan's assult and track them, he'll need nimbleness and a bit of luck to land any hits on the two Psi Warriors.

Shen walked towards Evan calmly, almost like nothing was going on at all.

Shen: "Evan, what are you going to do?"

Shen's voice almost seemed mocking for some reason and the echoes around in the psi palace didn't help at all.

Shen: "What can you do?"

Shen's hand opened up, revealing the Chaos Emerald she'd had there for a while now.

Star: "Seal of the Wind! Form!"

A green seal appeared under Star and high winds suddenly whipped him into the air like a leaf. He was heading towards the Crystal Psi Palace when he saw Schwa.

Star: "Schwa, what's going on!?"

Star didn't stop though, he kept going upwards.

...Damn. Nothing's changed, has it? All that training and practice, more arcane knowledge than actually exists, all to protect friends, and now, when it actually matters, I can't do a thing. Looking down at the green crystal in my hand, it's as though it had never meant anything at all. So much chaotic power that even the memory of how it was that I first obtained this marvelous object has been blown away, let alone its color. Was it colorful once? Red, blue, green? There's no way to tell, the black, lusterless way that it is now.

...What did I just think? I can't do a thing? Dammit, I'm old, not useless. Schwa's probably counting on me. By the looks of it, he'll need quite a bit of help to take on this mysterious new adversary.

Oh, what the hell. One more adventure couldn't hurt.

You old fool, you know very well it could.

Hah! Alright, then. One more adventure is worth the effort.

Indeed. Go on, Schwa's gone now. Better go after him.

Ah, so I see.

...

Adric turns, and leaps off the platform after Schwa. As he falls, with a great effort of concentration, he drops the crystal. Though he's not looking, when it hits the ground it shatters silently into millions of infinitesimal pieces. There is no one to watch as the black dust slowly ceases to exist, along with a bond Adric had long held sacred. It is somehow fitting that it ends as it began, lonely and forgotten. But of course, Adric is already flying off with incredible speed, looking through the forest below for any sign of the Psi Warrior.

Elsewhere, Kuroi holds out a hand, and golden shards come spiraling through the air, gathering together to form a small stone carving of a young girl, wearing a beautifully inscribed dress, holding a sphere in one hand, waving with the other. He carefully sets the statue on the ground in the wilderness, and begins his prayer to the Oracles.

Janus jumped to his feet, and ran up the intricately-formed crystal staircase to the Core of Crystal Psipalace, the very epicenter of the energy that kept it afloat. His mind raced of thoughts he could barely contain. Why was he here? Why was he so angry at Schwa? Did it matter, now that he was in the Crystal Psicore? Would this work, or kill them all? And furthermore, did that even matter...

Janus: "It's here... The gateway..."

Not taking heed of his surroundings and consumed again by a lust for power overwhelming, Janus slowly approached the pulsating energy field, grinning wildly. His Chaos Emerald glowed brightly as he strode close to the brim of the pit in which it was contained.

"The second Emerald, too..."

He stared for several seconds at his emerald, and reared back, throwing the emerald into the Ethereal abyss... There was a loud crackling noise as the emerald hit the outer layers of the energy field, piercing them with a purple trail of dark ether. Janus leaned in closer and suddenly snapped to attention as he realized that the walls of Crystal Psipalace were rumbling loudly. He stood up and looked around wildly just as Evan entered the room through the hole that Janus had crashed through.

"Wait, is this... Is this it?"

Evan: "Janus, you fool, what have you done?"

Janus whirled around to meet Evan, his eyes glowing purple...

Janus: "What has he done? What do you think? It'll make me so much stronger, I assure you..."

The walls of the palace began to crack and rumble, and the ethereal core flared purple, now beginning to swirl violently. Evan could do nothing but watch as the ball, now slowly melting into a dark pool, spewed from it not one, but two emeralds... The silver-grey one that Janus had already, and a second emerald, this one dark blue in color. Was the core of Crystal Psipalace powered by a Chaos Emerald?

"...And I know what you're thinking... The answer is no. It simply requires a tremendous amount of energy to summon one of the seven emeralds to this world without entering into the Emerald Dimension yourself. This pathetic excuse for a fortress of light contains more than enough, but Chaos will of course consume all that it encounters... And feed it to its subservients."

Evan: "What...? You mean..."

Janus: "It's mine, now..."

Evan: "No!"

Evan rushed at Janus, who held an emerald in each hand, both jewels glowing brightly. No sooner could Evan let out a cry of rage than did Janus disappear in a burst of chaotic speed, reappearing behind Evan and ravaging him with a barrage of punches, each of his fists gripped around an emerald! Evan staggered forward, whirled around, and delivered another hard punch at Janus, this time slamming him back through the walls that he had traveled through! There was a crash of rubble, and it was plain to see that Crystal Psipalace's structural integrity was, at best, failing... And yet Janus' had yet to even flinch. The two emeralds disappeared, and Janus took note of Shen just as Evan burst back into the main chamber of the palace.

Janus: "Oh, who're you... And why do you have my Emerald, young miss?"

He stepped slowly towards her...

Evan: "You stay away from her!"

Evan ran ahead of Janus, standing between him and Shen. He lashed out at Janus, sending punch after steel-smashing punch at the warrior, only to find his fist fly straight through him and into the empty air. Was he that fast?

Janus' approach continued...

Shen put a hand on her hat and pulled it lower. She expanded her soul energy and created a barrier around her and Janus effortlessly. She took a deep breath and the barrier instantly became stronger. She took another deep breath and the air around her completely changed and the barrier became near absolute.

Shen already knew that she stood no chance of protecting Evan and herself through a barrier, but she knew she could protect Evan by isolating him from his enemy.

Shen: "Who are you? Why do your mind and body smell of countless years of suffering? Why haven't you accepted death yet?"

Shen held her hand out to Janus, the chaos emerald in it, ready for the taking.

Star was frozen in place, he wanted to move, but didn't want to move. He wanted to find out what was going, but he didn't really want to know. He was just a step away from seeing a nightmare.

Janus: "It's not that I don't accept death... Keep that jewel from me for any longer, and you'll find out how accepting of death I am."

He faced the palm of his hand forward, and it glowed with dark energy as he pressed it forward and against Shen's barrier. It burned, oh, how the balancing forces of Shen's soul burned against his chaotic power, but Janus's power, with the help of not one but two Chaos Emeralds, far exceeded the point where Shen could harm him more than only temporarily. Still, the barrier was a temporary distraction, one that could prove costly if he did not take care of this woman now. Evan approached the barrier, his swinging fists ricocheting off of it as he tried to force through it and rescue Shen from Janus. He bellowed out in rage as he punched again and again.

Evan: "Shen! You need to run, dammit! He's too strong for you!"

Janus stopped as Evan yelled his aggressions, and turned his head towards him.

Janus: "Fool... She holds an Emerald. Any man, woman, or child who holds one of those Emeralds will eventually die at my hands, should they fail to give it to me. Far be it for you to try and stop me, less so for her to try and escape!"

He turned the glowing fist on Evan, firing a blast of chaotic force through the barrier, punctering it like a piece of paper. The blast slammed directly into Evan, blowing him away, away, away and against a miraculously-still-standing pillar. Evan sunk to the floor of the palace, out of commission. Janus gave a short, grunting laugh, and turned back to Shen.

"As I was saying... It's not that I don't accept death, you see. It's that death does not accept me."

---------------

Meanwhile...

Kalar: "Where're you going?"

Garro: "We have someone to visit. Call it a protective measure."

Kalar and Garro had another job to do. With the help of a conveniently-summoned tear in space from Kalar's scythe, the two of them found themselves in France, where Garro and the priestess Lunari, a friend of their target, had communed before. Garro found himself much more at ease with the faithful, despite his personal lack of true attachment. Still, mutual respect for the churches gave him some friends in very high places.

And sometimes, friends in high places could lead you to the friends that resided in the lowest of the low...

"Lunari said this was where our friend was currently located. I don't doubt her knowledge... But we may have already missed her. There's only one way to find out."

Garro's coat swung behind him as the two of them received stare after stare from random passerby. Though their weapons were concealed from the public and they moved without the assistance of any of their powers, a man in a suit that'd give a tailor a nightmare, accompanied by what looked like a fellow who had tried to hunt one too many vampires in his time were bound to be the type who would walk on the other side of the street from anyone in a 25 foot radius.

They approached the hotel and walked up to the front desk. The receptionist raised an eyebrow, but had ultimately seen stranger...

Garro: "Excuse me, is a Miss Coolling still checked into this hotel? I believe her first name is Samantha..."

The receptionist nodded dismissively, and the sound of a clacking keyboard filled the air as the logs for the hotel were checked. The receptionist asked the purpose of the visit, noting that the name was specifically marked for privacy. Another nameless one...

Garro reached into his coat, drawing from it a letter, conjured immediately at the moment and entailing the details of the "job" that he was about to give...

"We need to give her this letter. If I cannot hand-deliver it myself, then I ask that she be given it as soon as possible."

The receptionist gave another dismissive nod (stupid weirdoes thinking they're so important...), took the letter, and explained that the customer had required the utmost in personal security, and that she was accepting no visitors at the time. Garro nodded his assent.

"Very well then, see to it that she gets the letter."

He turned towards Kalar, walked past him, and motioned to follow.

"Come, we're done here. That should do fine."

Kalar nodded, began to follow, and with a snap of Garro's fingers, disappeared along with the priest in a puff of white smoke.

The receptionist just sighed and kept typing.

Sadly for Kuroi, someone didn't want to let his prayers be heard. A knife flew from a nearby tree, hitting the ground in front of Kurio. There was a string attached the end of the knife...

"Samantha Coolling" had recieved the letter almost instantly and had departed within five minutes. The letter had very specific instructions on who to go after and what to look for. Her network of spies and information responded well, telling her where she needed to go in no time flat.

She began to move.

...Kuroi was already caught in her web. Many knives were littered through the forest, each one a sign of a trap. The razor wire string on the end turned the forest into a deady trap itself, and someone lurked in the trees.

Shen: "Death accepts everyone, if they deserve it."

Shen's smile never faded as she still held the chaos emerald out in her hand.

Shen: "I will not try to decieve you or even stop you, but don't hurt Evan. Give him the chance to fight like you've gotten many times in your life."

Shen's half smile turned into a real smile as she moved the chaos emerald further out on her hand.

Shen: "I've seen your soul before, a while ago, I know you'll get through this."

Star stepped into sight as Shen finished speaking. He looked at Janus, then at Shen, at the barrier, and finally the, presumably, injured Evan. A small wisp of a cloud began to swirl in the air above them as Star held his sword to his side, the seals on it glowing brightly. Star looked around and then focused back on Janus.

Star: "You aren't Janus..."

(ooc: excuse me? Adric is flying above the forest, it's Kuroi who is doing the praying. I'll assume you meant to direct your attack on Kuroi. If this is, in fact, incorrect, please let me know.)

Kuroi remains perfectly calm. His pale skin and long, dark hair are still frustratingly motionless. Not even a flicker can be seen in his closed eyes.

But of course, he must have noticed. The orb in the statue's hand begins to glow with a pale yellow light. Kuroi's kneeling figure casts a shadow on the ground, which then proceeds to stand up off the ground and take a look around for the hidden assailant.

After all, nothing may interrupt the prayer.

OOC: Gah, you're all screwing with my head... Sorry for the wait, guys. (I think I know where this is going... Chaos Emeralds? Yeah-heh heh heh... Yer style sure is somethin', mucho. )

"!! Schwa, someone's following us! ...It's JANUS!"

"Wha? ...NO, it's not. Hell, don't scare me like that again or I'll--"

"But he's moving faster than us, so what do we-- Hurry, Schwa, think of something!!"

"...Just a sec'... Holy shit! He's a major ally!"

"Really?"

"Keep flying. I'm falling back for a second."

"Be careful..."

Schwa falls back a little and swoops slightly higher, putting him only 6 feet in front of Adric in only a few seconds. It may startle him, but then again, knowing him, it may not. Schwa doesn't look back as he telepathizes with him.

"Your energy signature can only mean one thing... You're the guy, the ONE guy who saved my ass twice without warning-- against a dragon god, then again against a dimension-hopping android. Adric! So what is it, 'third time's the charm' or something? We're fighting someone powerful beyond the laws of physics this time-- yeah, tougher than that dragon and that bot put together, I'm afraid-- I could use some assistance, but I ain't about to drag an innocent into it against his will! So what's your shpiel? Need me to explain anything?"

Allaura enters the conversation. "Schwa, who is that? I can't stand being left in the dark again!"

"Just a moment, Allaura. Go ahead and fall back as well if you want to meet my ol' friend here."

She doesn't fall back-- yet anyway. Still, she's in this, if Adric wants to tell her anything.

(ooc: You still have it wrong, Dracoon. It's not Kurio, it's Kuroi.)

"Yes, yes I would like to know what's going on. But that can wait. Exactly how far away from this man do we need to get? I would like to ensure the safety of you and your... companion. Kuroi is a bit occupied at the moment, but I trust he'll be joining us shortly."

Adric seems uncharacteristically worried. But then, chaos is something you just don't mess with.

His thoughts stray for a moment to the crystal. At one point, it had been perhaps the most powerful defense against any magic that would do harm to the bearer. He recalled having relied on it extensively in many of his past battles, all of them flicking by in his memory. For it to have been so immediately ruined... He has few hopes of winning a battle with this mysterious adversary.

Staying in one place, would be nothing short of suicide. Nijote reached out her arm out and pointed as gun at Kuroi. She thought she was going to kill him, but something inside of her made her move the gun just enough, so that if Kuroi didn't dodge, the bullet would only go through his shoulder. At about the same time, Nijote released a liquid that ran down the string nearest to Kuroi and when it hit the knife, it exploded like a stick of dynamite.

The shadow reaches out a phantasmal arm at incredible speed, snatching the bullet out of the air. The bullet does not stop, but is merely redirected at the wire upon which the liquid approaches. With a silent snap of his fingers, the shadow turns the bullet to acid, and it rips right through the razor wire. The liquid has no path to delivery, so hopefully will be unable to detonate the knife.

Kuroi's shadow then turns to the source of the bullet, holding out a single 'finger' out of which a bolt of purple lightning erupts. A target struck by this attack will have their mind temporarily damaged, so will probably either lose consciousness or become paralyzed. It will last only a minute or so, but that would definitely be long enough to finish the prayer and get away.

Kuroi himself continues to remain stationary, wholly focused on his task.

The purple lightning just flew through the trees, completely missing it's target. Nijote had been moving while attacking, and right now, she was already behind Kuroi. Without any hestiation, she began to attack him with a series of kicks, but at the same time, she fired 29 bullets at the statue. No matter what, Kuroi was going to get interupted, Nijote refused to fail.

Kuroi's shadow returns to his body as the attacks begin. The first gunshot shatters the statue into millions of golden shards, which fly off in a sudden gust of wind. Kuroi himself recieves blow after blow to his back, but remains motionless and unflinching despite the wounds.

And then, a soft blue light envelops the clearing. All motion stops within the area... Perhaps it is time that is manipulated. A voice asks psychically through the stilled air...

"Why?"

The light fades. Kuroi collapses to the ground, unconscious, perhaps from the wounds, perhaps from the prayer. Whether or not Kuroi had time to finish is completely unknown, even to himself.

Janus: "Are you so sure about that...? Do you have any idea what I intend to do with this power? Don't be so naive, you blind bitch. You can "see" no better than I can shed a tear for anyone in this room's pain."

He reached forward, and snatched the Emerald from Shen's hand, his eyes growing wide as he grinned at its magnificent beauty and power... But his joy soon turned to a scowl, as he realized what a binding he had created in his greed. His face turned to Shen's, and he eyed her dangerously as the Emerald glowed for several seconds, turned a blazing white color, and disappeared, its power integrated into Janus' being.

"But, for the Emerald, he lives. For now."

Janus stomped his foot, and the barrier around he and Shen was shattered instantly, with Janus' power amplified once more by the presence of a third Chaos Emerald... The wave of energy blew quickly and shortly out from him, and the light of the barrier was shattered to pieces as Janus backed away from Shen. Despite his feelings of anger and rage, there was something deep inside him that still survived, suggesting that yes, he could trust this woman, even though she was his enemy. If only he left that man alive, that is...

Janus backed a few more steps away from Shen, and looked at Star out of the corner of his eye. Star...

Star, of all people, he had not expected to stand against him. The shifting rivalries that all of the parties involved had experienced in the past, the friendships and hardships that they had overcome together suggested that there might be a possibility that Star, whom Janus had confided in so long ago, would ally with him and taste the sweetly supreme power that he sought.

Alas, that was not to be. Janus knew that the moment Star touched his sword. That was what it always meant.

This time, though... This time, Star was outmatched and both he and Janus knew it.

"And you, Star... How dare you assume you know such a thing..."

Janus placed his hands on Satchel's handle, and held it outward, ready and willing to kill.

"I look like Janus, don't I? Don't I feel like Janus? When I came close, so damn close to killing Schwa just now, didn't you think it was me? Don't I hold this hammer without difficulty? Is there any other man in the world who can do so?"

His expression changed again from scowl to grin, and the purple light surrounded him, intensified by the newer of his three Emeralds.

"Do you have the courage to face the truth? That yes, I AM the Janus you once knew and befriended?"

Crystal Psipalace was in flames... It would not be long at all, now, until the destruction inside the castle caused its outside to begin to fail. Evan slowly got to his feet as Janus boasted, and looked to Shen. She was all right, miraculously! He staggered towards her, knowing that if he was right, this was but a short interlude in Janus' rampaging hate. And who was it that had showed up at this moment to save them...?

Was that Star? Had they met before...? Evan's thoughts were very brief before the Chaos Energy around them all became too much for him to bear, and consciousness left him.

---------------

Kalar: "She's late."

Garro: "I expect she met with some resistance, if she even took our mission at all..."

The two of them waited in the old apartment that Janus had lived in before his disappearance... It was littered with books of magical study, mounds of video games and consoles, and a refridgerator full of various juices and wines from a wide variety of worlds. Presumably, Janus had drank from them all.

Probably all at the same time, at some point.

This was the apartment that Janus had lived in. Despite his fabulous wealth from the hundreds of thousands of years he had spent adventuring, Janus intentionally chose this spot as a chance to live a normal life once again. The apartment was worthless, dingy, run-down, and centered in the slums of the city that they had lived in, but for some reason, the man was happy here. Janus had mentioned many times that he was a fan of the life that the people in this part of the city had led... working hard every day to eke out a living amongst the worst the world had to offer. He had admired their courage and perseverence, and sought to live among them. Of course, with refusal to touch his wealth also came the difficulty of having a day job and paying bills. In order to keep a healthy balance between his work and his daily requirement of kicking ass and taking names, Janus had decided to get a roommate.

Some time ago, Janus had rented out the apartment to a rather peculiar man that the three of them had developed a potent dislike for. He was a powerful psychic, and as a result knew exactly how to get all three of them pissed off for no reason. Because of this, he was eventually forced out of Janus' life, and had gone to live on an isolated island that, as he put it in a recent letter (unread, by the look of the dusty envelope still on Janus' kitchen table), floated in the skies above the planet.

In any case, Janus kicked him out, went back to his day job, and reserved his nights for going out and looking for people in danger. This particular fact played a very significant role in allowing him to meet someone very special to him, and the direct result of such an endeavor actually caused his employers, a grocery store down the street from his apartment, to presume him dead after he had not come into work for several months, which leads us to the present day.

But enough backstory.

Kalar and Garro waited in silence for their employee to finish her job. They had another proposal for her, and had told her to meet them here when she finished her current target off.

If she could, that is.

Shen walked towards Evan and when he passed out, she reached out with her soul to hold him upright. Before the chaotic power could overcome her, she raised a barrier to filter it out. She slowly let Evan fall to the floor and tried to wake him back up.

Shen: "Evan... Don't hate me for that..."

Star didn't seem to mind the chaos as it washed over him.

Star: "You know Janus, I've had a long time to think about how to kill you. I may not understand what happened to you, but I know the real you would be begging me to kill you right now!"

Star leaped at Janus, bringing his sword down with a strong force, but he wasn't aiming at Janus' body. Star knew that Janus couldn't be killed through his body. He was aiming at Janus' hammer. Star would break it and destroy everything inside.

Nijote checked to see if her victim was still alive. He was, of course, Nijote knew that she didn't kill him, but she had to check to ease herself. She picked up his limp body and touched a radio communicator in her ear.

???: "Are you ready?"

Nijote: "Yeah, go ahead, teleport me."

Nijote and Kuroi vanished in a bright light.

Nijote and Kuroi reappeared with a flash of light, right outside the door where Kalar and Garro were waiting. She didn't bother knocking, but walked right in. She tossed Kuroi onto a nearby couch and looked at Kalar and Garro.

Nijote: "I hope you weren't waiting to long, he... was a little stronger than I thought."

Nijote's thoughts: "Those traps were overkill, such a waste."

Kuroi is immediately coated in a bright golden light upon hitting the couch. His eyelids open, but the eyes themselves seem to be rotating at random. He jerks upright, as though being handled roughly by an invisible force. His mouth opens, and he begins to babble, words and syllables in fifty different languages, none of them forming phrases of any coherence to speak of. His arms and legs flail wildly as his fingers continually flex and unflex, dozens of times per second.

And then he collapses again, and the light fades.

Evan's eyes flitted open for a few seconds, as he muttered something only Shen could hear. His head dropped back down, and he rested for a few seconds before forcing himself to his feet. He wasn't done fighting yet...

Star was, as was par for the course with these psychotically one-sided story battles, completely outmatched by Janus, who glowed purple for an instant as he flashed in and out of existence and out of the way of Star's blade. He reappeared behind Star, gripping his shoulder tightly, and raising his hammer above his head...

Janus: "I don't know why I'm condescending enough to deal with you today, Star...

He swung his hammer at Star from behind, and disappeared a second time, reappearing to his left and swinging again. There was another flash, and Janus ended with a golf-shot to Star's midsection, aimed at sending him flying. Janus leapt back from his list of blows to Star, and glowed brightly with Chaos Energy, the blaze more intense than before by far... Three Chaos Emeralds, and the hate and rage that accompanied his dismay at Star for truly betraying him in what he perceived as his hour of need.

"...But if your choice is to try to kill me, then you must not know how alive I feel right now!"

Evan's eyes snapped open, as he sensed EXACTLY what Janus was trying to do. Star? That was Star for sure! That blade, that sword style, and the fact that Janus had called him by that name was more than enough evidence. He rose to attention, and directed as much energy as he could at warning Star!

Evan: "Star, NO! He's going to--"

Janus: "You shut up, interloper!"

Janus pointed at Evan, blowing a wave of Chaos Energy at him that knocked the hulking man backward, but not down. Evan silenced himself, and turned to Shen.

Evan: "Shen, we've... we've got to get out of here now. I've seen this before..."

---------------

Garro: "That's fine, that's fine, Miss Nijote. We're really just glad that you were good enough to meet with us under these conditions. However, your convulsive friend here was not part of the agreement. You know what we're dealing with, here. Dispose of him, or deal with him however you might."

Garro waved a hand at Kuroi, and he became encased in a Stop spell for the next few seconds. That should hold him, Garro thought.

Kalar: "Really, we want to discuss your next mission. There's a lot of money and power in it for you if you succeed. It's tough, but we have faith in you."

Garro: "Yes..."

Kalar got up and walked to the window of Janus' living room, lifting the shade to the rising sun, and folding his hands behind his back.

Kalar: "For your next mission..."

He turned around, and the light in the room clashed with the sunlight to cast a shadow around his body, eclipsing the sunlight from the view of all others in the room.

"...We want you to deactivate Dracoon. Permanently, if possible."

Star soared through the air, unsure of what just happened. He spun as he hit what remained of the roof of the crystal psi palace. He was angry for some reason, rage flowed through him. He shot back down towards Janus, his entire body pulsating with energy.

Star: "Thousands of years of life and training, aeons of growth and developement, my full power, look at it Janus! Seal of the Stars!"

The crystal psi palace was covered by the seal, Shen took this time to protect Evan and herself and leave the psi palace before things got worse.

The psi palace glowed as the seal focused around Janus, showing up on his very skin. Star began to flash step and with each passing striked at Janus and his weapon, hardly appearing at all as he constantly attacked Janus.

Shen: "Evan, I'm sorry about what I did, but I believe it was the right thing to do."

Shen and Evan were safely moving towards the earth, standing on a slightly visible patch of soul energy.

Nijote was stunned.

Nijote: "I...I can't beat Dracoon..."

Nijote knew she couldn't beat Dracoon, it was impossible. They would hardly be able to hurt each other and it would be a test of endurance. Nijote didn't have the advantage of keeping it up forever either, she was doubtful that Dracoon would even fight her.

Nijote: "I know someone who can though... with a chaos emerald. Doe, an assassin from the underground society. I'm not sure what... it... is doing, but I'm sure it can defeat Dracoon with help."

Doe, the sniper, was genderless for all anyone knew. Doe however was probably the best one-shot killer in the world. The thing is, if the first shot didn't kill the target, the mission was most likely a failure.

Nijote: "If you give me the chaos emerald, I can take it to Doe and tell it about the objective. Dracoon will be dead as soon as possible. If Dracoon doesn't die, I doubt anyone would be able to stop him. Even the current Janus would have problems with him right now."

Nijote turned towards the limp, might as well be, corpse.

Nijote: "You should question him and find out why he was trying to contact Yiusi, if you guys die, I don't get paid after all."

Nijote paused for a second, almost forgetting something.

Nijote: "And about tracking down Doe, it'll be ten times the rate than it was for stopping this guy, Doe will probably want ten times that."
