Hmm...not half-bad. I was expecting less out of a marathon from a n00b. Couple of things, though:

1) I think I've stressed this enough when I posted mine but you may have missed it...graphic for the background is 320x240 or 640x480. Don't make it anything other than these two; Stepmania shouldn't have to do the duty of resizing the images.

2) The streams on your Heavy got boring after a while and I'll state this was only in a select few areas...particularly towards the end and wherever you did your jumping streams...some of which didn't really feel symmetric at times. The runs at the end were a dull, dull reminiscence of the actual song, which wasn't half bad...it was basically me waiting forever for the thing to finally get done. You don't want to put people through that. You don't want to give people streams of quarter notes for measures and measures that don't have any set beat to them besides the actual BPM of the song.

3) Everything else seems fine. For the most part, you were on the beat of the song. I wasn't too thrilled with your intro, but the rest of the song, negating #2, was spectacular. I was equally impressed that you had nailed the sync for the entire song. Not many n00bs can do that. Not many n00bs can make a halfway decent 11 footer on their first go either, so this is definitely showing of your potential to be a simfile artist.

All told, I'd rate this an 8 or 9 (which I'll likely do now) more than likely leaning towards an 8 for some of the things in the first two parts. Definitely got some work to do in cranking out sims but I believe you could easily get some done that I would easily rate a 10 if you can do something like this as your first sim ever. There's just too much work here not to ignore.

Thank you, I'll remember this.

I'll admit the ending was hell for me to do, and I did get a bit careless, I should have stuck with the shortened version of the song that ends midway through "Power! Music! Electric Revival!" But I wanted to do a full version. As for the jumping streams, I wanted to keep it challenging, but not stupid. I was originally going to go with full jumps through the section(s) you were refering to (where the chorus goes "Bombs Over Baghdad"), but that was too much, so I had to cut it down. So it could have been worse.
P.S. what do you think of my Light and Standard steps? I like Standard the best because I kept it at the happy medium between simple yet challenging.

I wasn't too thrilled with your intro
Yes, I did several versions of the intro, and sadly I couldn't think of anything too well. Maybe I'll destroy all the steps and just make it something to listen to.

but the rest of the song, negating #2, was spectacular
Thank you! That made my day! (The whole hour left of it)

I was equally impressed that you had nailed the sync for the entire song. Not many n00bs can do that.
This is what took some work, I put extra effort into this because I know this is what n00bers get penalized most for. So I wanted to show I had an adept rhythm in sim making. Also this being a 5 minute song didn't make it any easier.

...if you can do something like this as your first sim ever.
Actually, this is my first *released* sim. I have about 6 or 7 others, but they aren't too good. Plus, I got them from previous DDR songs, so I didn't want to use them because they weren't start-from-scratch stepfiles. But thanks for you in-depth review. I'll take into consideration all you said when I start my next sim (perhaps a shorter song this time).

I'll admit that I really didn't even view Standard and Light even though I probably should have given your first "released" sim. I say this because not very many people will view a sim for difficulties other than Heavy or Oni unless the foot rating is 10 or above...possibly 9 in some cases.

As for what you were talking about the streams, I can understand where you're trying to come from but at the same time you COULD have jostled the step choices up just a bit. Step-Jump-Step-Jump rhythms get old just like any other technique that you can employ in sims. You can CONNECT them with some other techniques though and that usually makes for a decent mix around.

So you could do your first technique, step-jump for several measures, offshoot into something else for a few, come back to step-jump, offshoot into a third and repeat. In marathon files like that, you HAVE to make it so that the person DOES NOT fall asleep. Straight out runs without a lot of changing up doesn't really help. For a standard sized file, however, I could see that working...but in the longer versions of the files it gets a little harder to keep the attention of people. I say this because I've had quite a bit of experience with getting long versions and marathons out and I know what people want and what they don't like based on what I made.

A controversial ups-and-downs sim that I made that was close to this one that I had SOOOO much trouble getting a decent sim out of was SO DEEP Full Version. The main problem about it was that the song had a spot where it basically shut up for a long time without any beat. That made for a really, really hard thing to get through so I had to make the steps as best I could and make sure that people were going to sit through a six-and-a-half-minute song. Take a look at that and you'll see what I mean about keeping people awake...that or the better done 2MB Megamix if you want a VERY good Marathon that I've done.

.....how long did it take me to get SM? Really? Yea, well, I don't wanna hear it! I have it now, and tho I'm not the best, I would love to play with you guys.

And now I'm gonna die, cause they have songs that I could only wish to play...and now I can.

...of which I said most suck or have sucky steps to.

And she mentions Stepmania Online, not the original SM. She was kinda bored and I beat her arse in it early today. Though, the server was being incredibly retarded too.

EDIT: Checked her score listing. Holy CRAP...you solo'd a LOT yesterday, didn't you?

No one would play with me. Colin had an excuse, and I didn't have the same songs (I think that was the reason) as Xkeep, so I just played with myself all night long.

You were right about the steps...especially the Rent ones. But some that weren't made by you were pretty decent. You gotta try Battle in forgotten city (FF7 AC)..man was that interesting.

Eh...there's a select few authors on that site that I know to be good besides the ones I know here, some I've even co-op'd with...but otherwise, it's rare to find and quality sims there. People just don't take the time or know how to make one.

Anyways, this is my last one for a while:

3-way co-op on this one.

I got through it, didn't I?

SEE ALSO: Picture of C on MAX 300.

ADDITIONALLY: I have to agree with some people on DDRFreak who say that getting a D on MAXX Unlimited is a feat in and of itself. As you point out, I did TERRIBLY and still wound up with a C (I went to a dance point calculator and the grade came out to something like 48.XX).

I can do MAXX Unlimited and others on the soft pad, but I have major difficulties with them at the arcade. I'm not trying to rain on you (because even PASSING THEM on console is a feat), but it still isn't an arcade pass. But what we have for you is an excellent stepping stone for future accomplishments.

Bing on soft would likely mean you could pass it in the arcade...even Cing high would give you a chance...so it's not an impossibilty to rule out him passing in the arcades...it's just the timing is much stricter than the home version.

On the plus side, at least you don't have to worry about sliding pads with it.

There's a reason I continually mention that my accomplishments are on console--I'm well aware of the differences between console and arcade timing (Though my understanding is that, at least at present, Supernova uses a timing much closer to that of the console versions). Apparently, there may be some discrepancies in lifebar drain too (Which I wouldn't know for sure).

Yeah, I don't think I'm gonna enjoy Super Nova...

Well, we'll see. If I start AAing Xenon and Witch Doctor because of the timing, then I'll know that there's a problem.

Well I switched to spread two weeks ago and now I can pwn all my index scores. Ex:

Black Dragon oni C700
Emerald Sword C700
Vertex Beta 3.5x

It's really amazing to me, things I struggled with on index are easy on spread. I'm just psyched at such an ability jump, I didn't think most of the things I can high A or double now were passable for me at one time.

Edit:
OHOHOHOHO one day....but seriously after staring at this monitor for 2 minutes is like staring at the sun,it's probly destroying my vision.

I'm wopndering about making sims and ethics...

Now we know that by acquiring a simfile you're also getting (in most cases edited) version of the Mp3.

Is there some sort of unwritten rule that you shouldn't make an Mp3 of a chart song, because I;'ve heard a few and think I could make some pretty decent steps for it... would this be frowned upon though?

beats me, I've had several girls flirt with me from DDR but I don't think I could date a girl from it. My current gf does play DDR but not on a regular basis like I do.

Personally, I think guys who "look good" while playing (i.e. free style, doing spins, etc) are more likely to grab attention than someone spasming on PSMO.
