I really want to become a doctor. Nobody else wanted me to, I chose myself. To help people, to eradicate certain infectious diseases maybe, whatever. Medicine interests me. But to do it, I need to go through these grueling 14 years of my life. (4 for college and med school each, 3 for residency and fellowship each) Right now I'm a freshman at Rutgers. I've never been the best student around. But I do know I'm "smart" and have been discouraged many times before when I received low grades. However, I always pulled through in those science or math courses with a C, managing to keep my average a B+ even though I know I could've done better. And now, after being on academic probation the first semester, my grades have come up a little, and I haven't failed any major tests yet, but I wonder how much longer I can keep this charade up. Even if I pass all my classes, I doubt I would get into Medical School with a C average. Why should I have to dig through so much shit like Calculus and Physics just to get to the real poignant stuff? I'll be 31 if I do become a doctor. But no matter what, I can't see myself as anything else. I chose to become a doctor because I feel that's a job I would feel needed at, feel important at doing. But I'm not really all that great at science. Or math. Or anything else. So it's either become a doctor or a bum on the streets to me. There are times when I can't see myself as either. Sure I can really hit some concepts home with chemistry and calculus(courses I'm re-taking this semester) but I can't remember all that I need to know. And that's what kills me.

First of all .

I know exactly how you feel. I want to be a doctor as well, and join doctors without borders. I'm not the smartest person in the school.. I do 85-90 typically... but I'm not like the kids who get 99s on everything and are going to get a 2400 on the sat. I just can't compete with alot of these students.. it's just a simple fact. When I get to college I'm scared that's happening to you is going to happen to me. Same thing. Funny thing? Math and science are my least favorite subjects... I just want to help others so bad that I think I could sit through years of it to achieve my goal. I suck at math to. I don't know why you need so much riculous math to become a doctor. It's truly ridiculous.

You know you can go to a medical school outside of the US anywhere in the world... I bet they're not nearly as competitive. That's what my moms friend's daughter did... and she had a 3.5 gpa.

Another key factor is realizing where you're at. If you really feel you can't make it into medical school.. consider becomming a nurse or something. I mean, you're still helping people... and that's what's really important. I mean you're human.. you have limits. Not doing what you planned isn't failing.. you just need to find something you can do well at. Your niche.

Motivational problems suck... I have them right now too, I know how it is. You just have to try really hard though, you can't give up. I don't have quality problems, I have problems doing the work in time. It's just when you get busy, you don't have time to double/triple check all your work...

In my eyes, at least, even if you aren't acing all of your classes you're still in a better spot than many people entering your profession. I know people here who have professed a love for a given subject - in one case, English and writing - but who have opted for a biology degree because, to paraphrase, "Medicine pays better than English."

I'm not fooling anyone if I say a love for a subject will assure one's mastery of that subject, but I have infinitely more respect for you, someone who is pursuing a passion regardless of logistical factors, than a stupid girl who will throw away years of her life just so that, in the end, she can bring home a bigger paycheck. Who will be happier in the end, a person who is filthy rich but dreads going to work everyday, all the while regretting a dream she abandoned, or someone who might have to work ten times harder and might not even achieve the same success, but who will love his life regardless?

SS: Yea, I agree totally.

Yea, it's just that all the little snags when doing problems add up and really get to me.

Snow: Uh, is a 3.5 gpa supposed to be low? Because as of now I feel that I'd need to be damn lucky to get that.

I've been thinking about schools outside of the US a lot. Spain and Italy are known for their excellent medical schools. And the cost is certainly lower and it does open up more possibilities. I've also been looking into India. That way even though I'm away from my family here, I can still catch up with my extended family there. And not to mention they have some pretty good schools also. Some geared towards American education systems as opposed to the more common European ones.

Do NOT let your motivation go down. Having a dream and a life objective is probably one of the greatest thing seriously, giving a good direction where to go on in your life. I, for my part, have almost no friggin' idea what I want to do in as less as 5 years from now on. So I say don't even think about droping your dream now

As for your disdain of calculus and physics class, I can pretty much understand (I failed about half my math exams and got the principal to have my physics class replaced by an art one in high school) but keep in my mind that classes like these help develop your logic and problem resolution skills(very helpful in medics don't you think? )

With that in mind go motivate yourself a bit and make your dream a reality.

My advice would be to stop comparing yourself to others, and just focus on your goal. With each new test and each new day comes a new chance for you to become a doctor, so make the most of it. So what if others do better than you, that doesn't mean you won't get the chance. You'll never be the best, nor will I. Nobody is. Don't strive for such a difficult goal. Just make the effort every day, and it will show.

I think that once you get into those grueling 14 years, you'll only try harder. One step closer, right?

In Calculus, I got a D(again). And I got a 72 in my Chemistry final. No word what it's out of, but I'm thinking 200 points.

I'm probably just being uninformed, but... I honestly have no idea how useful calculus would be for a doctor. Chemistry would be useful, though...

You don't have an actual letter grade on the chem one? You can always hope it's 72 out of 80 or (more realistically) 72 out of 100, which would be a C-.

Well, it is rude, but it may be true.

I'm not meant for my program at school, but my situation was different. I had no passion about it. Theology? I hate it. Philosophy? Doesn't mesh with me.

Trunxy here is a great young man and he IS passionate. He is doing this for selfless goals. I'm sure that if he sucks up one bad year (as I have had to do) he'll shine in the next three and go on to med-school. Failing that he can make it anywhere else. My only advice is that he seriously consider what he is doing. It's better to admit dislike and inpropriety in the beginning than wait til' the end.

It's only this year where I've managed to see why the ocean is near the shore.

Ew... B and C!? If you want to get into a bigger college you'll need to seriously pull those grades up pal. I know Cs can definately put a kink in your GPA. Try to find extracurricular activities and you're bound to get into a scholorship somewhere. You're not in college just to study, you can fit a cool club or something in your schedule.

Don't worry though, just look forward, screw the people that tell you otherwise.
-Keep oganised
-Ask questions
-Be prepared
-And... BE PERSISTENT!

Anyone can be smart and make bad grades, but stupid people who are persistent can make all A's. Some really great minds have fallen victim to giving up. what will you do?

I appreciate all your comments there, guys. Yea, things are looking down. But, if this is truly what I want to do then there's no way getting around it. I am also looking at some Nursing school programs, specifically ones connected to medical schools. I can't give up now when I can still try harder.

Calculus isn't so bad, but chemistry is EXTREMELY important for med students.

That said I do wish him luck in his endeavours.
