First off, I hate to use both my first post and first thread on something like this, but if I don't make this thread today, I'm going to go crazy (so to speak)

The job is at Taco Bell, for those that haven't read that here, or at board2. Right now, I work during both the night and day. By that I mean that one day, I could be working in the morning or afternoon, while on another day, I could be working at night. Thing is, the job itself turned out to be not at all like what I expected it to be. I don't like working there at all, to sum it up in a few words. As for what I don't like about it in detail, the following paragraphs will explain that. Note that I haven't yet been shown how to make food, or take orders at the counter. I know how to do three main things so far, which are the following:

Taking orders and customers' money at the drive through / drive through window. I've actually only taken the orders for one night now, but I'm still going to include that, as I was on my own, except for when I needed help from the two other people that were working that night as well. That's fairly easy, although it can get stressful at times when there's no end to the line of vehicles, or you can't figure out what to press on the keypad. I realize the latter problem will disappear after I get used to taking orders, but that hasn't happened yet. As for taking money at the window, that's pretty easy. The only problem I've had with that so far is accidentally forgetting to give a customer their change, or giving them the wrong amount.

The second task I've done up 'till now has been washing the dishes. According to the manager there, dish duty is given to whoever is running the drive through. It's easy enough to wash them, except when you get the occasional dish that needs to be soaked, but the problem with them is that there's usually so many. Last time I went in, they were piled up on the floor.

Finally, the third thing I know how to do is clean up the dining room during the day. That's a simple matter of wiping down tables if they're dirty, taking any trays back to the sink to be washed, changing the garbages, and cleaning and restocking the drink station. I can't really complain about this duty, as it has to be the easiest thing that needs to be done there. However, I only need to worry about it during the day. Not at night.

Now, I really don't like working at night, as so far, I've started at either 8 or 10, and had to work anywhere up 'till 5 in the morning, and possibly longer if there was still something that needed to be done. That in itself is the main reason I want to find a different job, at which I'd have to work 'till 12 at night, at latest.

I've already made a suggestion to my parents about working there until the end of November, then looking for another job, but they want me to continue working until I find another job, at which point I can leave Taco Bell. I just went up to Value Village last night and filled out another application form (that's three or four I've filled out there now), but while I was filling it out, I overheard one of the people that worked there say something about taking down the "Now Hiring" sign in the window, because they had a lot of something. I'm not sure what they have a lot of, but I've got the feeling they're application forms. However, I have four other places in mind as well. They are...

:: Real Canadian SuperStore
:: EB Games
:: Blockbuster
:: Wal-Mart

As should be obvious, I don't want to work at a fast food place unless I can't find a job anywhere else, although with luck, that won't be a problem.

Anyone else have an experience like this with their first job? I imagine there would be a few people here that did, and it'd be nice to see I'm not the only one who feels this way about their first job

That's too bad. I LOVE Taco Bell, but working there (or any fast food place, really) must suck. I hope I'll never have to work at a place like that. I currently work at a grocery store, which isn't terrible... maybe you could try that. Are you over 18?
You could work practically anywhere if you're over 18. A sports store, a grocery store, a gift shop, a pet store... just start applying anywhere. I don't blame you for hating a fast food job.

I can't really say I'm a fan of Taco Bell's food Up until when I started working there, I'd only eaten there once in my life (at an old friend's birthday party), and after seeing what the beef and such that's used for the food looks like before it's actually put in a taco shell or whatever else, I'm glad I've only eaten there once. I'm not trying to tell you that you shouldn't like their food, by any means. It's your choice if you want to eat there

Neither am I trying to say that other people that work at fast food places must feel the same way. There's got to be at least a couple people out there who work somewhere else, and would give anything to get a job at a fast food place. Well, actually that may not be the case, but there's always a possibility

As for working at a grocery store, Real Canadian SuperStore is partly one (half the store is food and related items, while the other half is clothes, toys, and stuff like that), and although I've already applied there once, I will again, as it can't hurt to do so. The only other grocery store I can think of is a No Frills that's going to be taking the place of Zehrs, as it got closed. Thinking about where the first Zehrs we ever went to was, there's Zellers, Canadian Tire, and a bunch of other shops near it, which I can try applying to. When it comes to gift shops, the only one I can think of right now is Gospel Text, but my sister already works there for her co-op course, so I doubt getting a job there would work. There has to be at least one other gift shop here though, so I'll have to take a look around.

Now that you've mentioned pet stores though, there is a Pet Valu that's pretty close to our house. The Heart and Stroke office, which is where I'm writing this from right now, is further away than that store.

Finally, I forgot to mention something in my previous post. I plan on telling Earl (the day manager) that I don't want to work anymore nights after the end of November next time I'm in during the day (which I think is this Thursday). The thing that pushed me over the edge in that regard was the hours I have to work this coming Friday and Saturday: 8 'till 5 in the morning both nights My friend is the night manager, so he won't be too pleased about that, but my decision is more based on not wanting to work nights at all, as opposed to what he thinks I should do.

Thanks for the suggestions though

My general rule is I work at a job for two weeks. If it's so terrible that if I want to quit after two weeks, I just don't come in ever again. The only job I've had that I thought was that terrible was a phone survey place.

Most other jobs I've hated for at most a week and a half, then you get adjusted and know people there, and know how to do your job better.

:: Real Canadian SuperStore <--- sounds sketchy based on your description
:: EB Games <--- most gamestores pay minimum wage, and no commission, from what I've heard. :/
:: Blockbuster <--- I would work in a movie place. The work seems easy and I like movies and being around people.
:: Wal-Mart <--- No.

I think Blockbuster sounds like a good place to work. I've always wanted to work there. I can't believe I almost picked Wendys as a job but, I'm glad I waited because I got a better job where I get paid above miniumum wage and everything.

Apply anywhere! It's the holiday season, isn't it? You can find a job you like, do your best, and hope they keep you after.

Never work at a Wal-Mart, the conditions are horrible... and in fact, someone wrote a book which half of it was about how terrible Wal-Mart is.

EB Games is another bad choice, you get a lot of ignorant parents yelling at you over stuff they don't understand, and they do pay minimum wage.

I'd probably go with Blockbuster... free movies!

Well, I got picked up by my Mom at 10 this morning to head out and get some application forms from various places. The first place we went to was EB Games, but apparently the assistant manager is supposed to have already phoned people to schedule interviews, and given that I've not been called, and what's been stated in this thread about working there, I think that's a good thing

As for Wal-Mart, we didn't go there this morning, as my Mom forgot about it, and I didn't feel like mentioning it, since we had to pick my sister up by 11, and it was nearly that time. After reading what MathOnNapkins and Joachim have said about it, I don't think I'm going to go there after all

Finally, Real Canadian Superstore (I've realized the second "s" is supposed to be lowercase ), after doing a bit of searching with google, I found this page in Wikipedia. The thing that caught my eye was this:

Zehrs Markets are known in Ontario by three distinct names, "Zehrs Markets, Zehrs Food Plus and Real Canadian Superstore (Ontario).

We used to have two Zehrs Markets here, but they've both closed now, one Zehrs Food Plus, which recently closed as well, and then Real Canadian Superstore, which is obviously open. As far as I can tell, you can basically say it's a Zehrs, except with a different name, and selling things besides food Whatever the case, we stopped by there as well, and although the lady behind the customer service desk couldn't say whether they were still hiring or not, I picked up a couple application forms.

A couple other places came to mind this afternoon though, a few of which I listed in my previous post.

:: Zellers
:: Canadian Tire
:: Staples

I went to Blockbuster as well, although they didn't have any application forms handy, so the person at the counter told me to bring in my resume as soon as possible. We go grocery shopping tomorrow, so I can drop my resume off then. I have to work tomorrow as well though, although it's from 4 to 9 at night, which isn't too bad.

It's 4:58 right now though, and I need to leave at 5, so that's all I have to say for now. It's going to be a long weekend, what with those two 8-5 shifts, but I made it through last weekend, so I should be able to do the same for the coming one.

I feel your pain. Taco Hell was my first job. I worked there throughout my junior and senior year of high school and over the summer before I went to college. I liked the people I worked with, and I loved the food, so I dealt with the stupidity decently, I guess. I think it's good to explore other options, though. Heck, I've been looking for another job for over a year because my current one literally compensates me about half of what I'm worth.

The whole job industry is unfair. You know what any place will pay you?
Less than you're worth but still enough to keep you coming back.

Oh, I'm glad you're not working at Wal-Mart, every one I've been to has had a bad smell.
Do you really get free movies if you work at BlockBuster?

This girl in what of my classes was talking about her job at Blockbuster. I think you get 5 free rentals each month. That's still basically free ones which is coolio and a few other benefits. You better get your resume there..and soon!

I hope this isn't a bump I was going to post some of this last time I was in, but I was still the last one to have posted in this thread, and I didn't want to make a double post. Since about the middle of last week, I applied to 6 more places that I thought would be fun to work at. They are the following:

:: Blockbuster
:: Sobeys
:: Canadian Tire
:: Staples
:: Zellers
:: Pet Valu

Both Canadian Tire and Pet Valu didn't have application forms, so I just gave them my resume. The lady at Pet Valu actually said something about showing it to her husband, which I wasn't expecting. Still, I'd like to work there, as it definitely is smaller, and a lot less hectic than Taco Bell. That doesn't mean that I don't want to work at the other places as much. Pet Valu just stuck out so far.

I have to work two more 8 to 5 shifts this Friday and Saturday night, so I'm glad I've managed to apply to as many places as I have already I did get my first pay stub last Thursday or Friday, and I don't know what's wrong with it, but apparently I've only earned ~$35 so far I assume it'll be more next time, but it doesn't help me like the job any more.

There's still a bit of stuff I've yet to say, but seeing as it's already nearly 5:00, I'm going to end this here. I am in again tomorrow though, so I'll type the rest then

That's why Mighty Taco is sooo much better than Taco Bell!

As for your job, I'd say EB Games, or if possible, GameStop.

Dude, shouldn't they give training to people at a fast food place before putting the employees up for cashier jobs? It sounds like you actually live there. Taco Hell, though overused, seems like a suitable name.

shifts, of course
anyways, i've *considered* getting a job, but i live too far away from.... civilization. the nearest town is about 10 miles away... in a sin curve type of path. (meaning there's no way in hell i'll bike that, haha)
also i won't be 16 until may 6, 06... and then i'll finally be able to have a license on november 6, 06... but then there's monetary problems to throw in, heh.
i wish i could get a job online with my friend's dad's company, but they won't hire a 15 year old, most likely.
also i'm too busy loving my freetime because i know i'm gonna be losing that soon.

I really hate my manager Willie. He's such a MF who makes fun of me and thinks I'm a slacker. I kinda wish he would stop treating me like a trash can. If I die doing gunshots, getting attacked by dogs or murderers, getting stuck in an elevator or tries to molest me, who's gonna support me.

My next Job interview for the Hunts Point Fish Market is at December 29th in Hunts Point Works. So I had to earn money right away without wait.
