My band is playing a show in a couple of weeks and we want to extend our set a little ( and covers are good for recognition ), so we decided to do a cover.

What should we do? Our main influences are Kreator, Children of Bodom, In Flames, and Judas Priest.

Thanks!

I like to hear covers of things that normally wouldn't get covered. Case in point, the best metal show I ever done seen was when my friend's band did nothing but cover Sinatra. If I were you I'd cover something a little less eccentric and perhaps play some Johnny Cash. Ring of Fire could be a killer metal cover.

Children of Bodom - Trashed, Lost, and Strungout

I love it, and it's a blast to play.

Heh.

That or Leather Rebel, if your drummer can perform that kind of drumming.

Open your show up with The Helion! Haha.

Anything on CoB's Hatebreeder (especially Downfall or Silent Night, Bodom Night), or Lake Bodom

(Or something totally unrelated like Liquid Tension Experiment's "Acid Rain" or "Paradigm Shift")

YEAH!!

but on to my suggestions:

::Mötorhead - The Ace of Spades!
This song still resides deep in the land of awesome, I don't know what else to say...

::Metallica - Fight Fire with Fire
Lesser known really fast Metallica song that has their older, thrashier sound.

:: Pantera - Regular People (conciet)
I think it's their best riff ever, up there with By Demons Be Driven.

(if you can pull off Dream Theater's Stream of Conciousness, that'd get you very recognized)

So I have to ask, maybe not the best thread too but oh well ...

Was Motorhead the first band to put out a real Speed Metal album? (similar to Judas Priest's Painkiller).

I can't remember where I read that, maybe in some Judas Priest booklet or something, I just remember some source saying Motorhead was the first band who started up Speed Metal.

I just want to point one thing out, covers usually suck. Unless your singer is better than the singer of the band, it won't seem to flow right and it seems messed up, especially if you're performing it in front of people who are metal fans.

If you have to do a cover though, do something you're really familiar with, don't look for crazy ass things that you've never heard of.

Also, without sound samples, how do you expect us to say what we think the best cover is.

Covers aren't supposed to be straight rips of the original song. I hate it when bands do that. You stick it to the song with your own style. Dang nabbit.

I just have to go to a Turmion Katilot concert sometime in my life. I'd love to hear them sing Verta ja Lihaa or 4kaskya on stage.

I love the Nirvana covers that Ed Gein put at the end of their albums. I like them more than the originals.

Agreed.

Example given = The Flaming Lips' cover of Radiohead's Knives Out. Changes it from a mellow guitar based tune to a jazzy bar room piano based song, complete with crazy soloing in the background and the distinctive vocals of Wayne Coyne.

Smooooooth.
