Hi all, I'm new to this board and would like to try some NES hacking. My problem is when getting started in Tile Layer Pro, and I open up my SMB3 rom, I get a giant image with all the sprites in the game, except they're all scrambled and such and basically have to be put together piece by piece like a giant puzzle. So to all the hackers out there, how would one go about editing Mario into a different character? Do you have to actually go through and search piece by piece, like find one box with part of his hat and edit it, then find one box with part of his face and edit it, etc.? If this is the case how do you know what box corresponds to what image in the game? For instance, I am having a very hard time telling which sprites correspond to Mario's face. The images are so darn small that I can't tell if I'm looking at part of an enemies face or part of Mario's face.

Thanks

Yes you'll have to. There are certain methods to get around it, though. Some basic, some advanced.

As for size, there's a zoom button. Use it.

YY-CHR has a feature that auto-aligns tiles for you in certain pre-set ways. I suggest using it, especially if you're a newbie.

Yes, a lot of NES games used either the 8x16 or 16x16 formats for their sprites, even if they don't go together perfect after that it's still much easier to edit them when at least some parts are assembled correctly. YY-CHR also has a much easier to deal with palette, perfect for NES editing since it's default is a NES palette.

YY-CHR definitely looks a lot better than Tile Layer Pro. My only problem is that after I downloaded it from Zophar's Domain and I clicked on the yy-chr.exe my antivirus gives me a warning and Windows gives me the following message: "Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item." Does this program not work on Windows XP or do I need to install something else to make the program compatible?

Argh, that problem again. Seems some of its code is the same as a trojan's, so the anti-virus gets confused. You can try the version available in this thread, see if that "fixes" it.

Thanks for the link, but I think it's more of an issue with my Windows than my antivirus. Come to think of it, I haven't been able to get files with the .exe extension to work for quite some time, I double click and nothing happens usually. I'll google it and hopefully that will solve things.

That sounds an awful lot like a big problem with Windows itself.

Consider reinstalling or running a full scan with your antivirus.

Never mind about my Windows, I guess it was fine all along. The fix for me was just reinstalling yy-chr and turning off AVG when I loaded the program. This program works great by the way. Thanks a lot!
