I wouldn't say Madden's crappy but the problem is that they'll use the same game engine for all the EA games for anywhere between 2-4 years. Minor upgrades each year when they don't change it. So that's why you might see a Madden game get great reviews one year then have the scores drop off over time; there's changes to the game, but it's not anything radically different.

I am amazed no one has reacted to Ziff's FF7 comment. I was so sure
Not that he's wrong or anything. (edited by Professor Logic on 03-28-06 11:45 PM) (edited by Professor Logic on 03-29-06 09:10 PM) |

I still think FFVII is a great game, overall. Maybe because I'm just a fan to most RPG's, but still FFVII has some of the emptiest characters in any game out there (Cloud ... who is he?), a horrible storyline with countless unfixed plotholes (that got even deeper thanks to Advent Children, and man was that movie bad), and other things that weren't too dandy. So, to call it the best RPG, or crazy stuff like that ... wow.
So in short I always thought FFVII was decent, medicore ... nothing more and nothing less. Vice City was a lot better than SA in my opinion. It just had a much more interesting plot. I've never really had a problem with the GTA series though. (edited by Xeogred on 03-29-06 08:57 PM) (edited by Xeogred on 03-29-06 09:21 PM) |

If I wanted to react to the FFVII comment, I'd make some comment about FFVI. The problem is that I don't really think VI qualifies as one of the worst games ever made, per se, just one of the most overrated, which is a whole other topic.
ANYWAY: Hard Drivin' on the Genesis was pretty bad too. I have a review up for it on GameFAQs if you want to read just how bad. |

...That's the first time I've seen anyone call a game "great" and "mediocre" in the same statement.
I think the VII = overrated argument is probably a hell of a lot easier to make than the VI = overrated argument, though. |

Hard Drivin' - There has not been nor will there ever be a game more annoying than this game. I have it on a arcade collection disc for PS2 and yeah, pointless and a lesson in frustration.
And I will agree that FFvi and FFvii are both overrated, but that doesn't take away from the fact that they were a blast to play when they both came out. |

For something that was supposed to bring RPGs to the next generation, FFVII was pretty terrible. It still relied on the primitive battle system introduced in the 80s, and the most noticable change was the 20 minute long summon sequences. It was during this period people really started caring more for epic plots and pretty cutscenes, rather than games that are actually fun to play. Only recently have there been some actual improvements to the franchise.

Ok...
First and formost, alot of FF games are overated, not just VI and VII. People get so wound up over their favorite or least favorite. People become diehard fanboys way too easy. One of my favorite games is a FF game... It may not be the "Best Game Ever", it is just my favorite. Back onto subject... Return to Castle Wolfenstein = really bad game. |

In the VERY old days there where text only games. they sucked beyond reason. I found this one which is sorta like the ones I remember: http://www.homestarrunner.com/dungeonman.html
Also, Sonic Adventure (DX for GCN) was pretty bad too. |

Colin: Forgive me, I'm clearly still living in 1999-2000, which was the peak of the anti-"nu-skool" (At the time, of course) backlash against FFVII during which everyone arbitrarily proclaimed the not-that-much-older FFVI the Savior of Videogames for some reason. If you look at the VERY early GameFAQs polls of the day from about that time, one of them (Which has been repeated several times since) is "Which is the best FF game?". VI actually wins over VII.
Someone on another message board I go to summed up my opinion of VI perfectly: "It's an incredible half a game. As for the second half, I'm still looking for it; it's gotta be in the cartridge somewhere...." Oh, back on-topic, I think Heroes of the Lance has somehow escaped mention to this point. NO MORE!! |

I also don't know how Seanbaby didn't manage to work his way into this.
20 worst video games 20 worst NES games Definitely worth a read. |

I think FF6 is a very good RPG but I can see where the "half a game" thing comes into play.
And I've seen Seanbaby's lists before... on the NES list, I disagree with Super Pitfall (not to say it was GOOD or anything, but it's not worst ever), Mighty Bomb Jack (which I like) and MUSCLE (...pirate 31-in-1 cart, don't ask). Arguments could be made for the rest in my opinion. |

Speaking of Final Fantasy VI (and in a way I feel bad putting links in here):
Terra's Lament Really, it's very true. The game really has a lot of focus for the first half or so. And I like the second half of the game a lot, as I actually enjoy the nonlinearity quite a bit. But it really seems that they trade focus away to get that, and the game just seems...lost, a lot of the time. Still, the scene where you get the airship...again...is always enjoyable, and though that music gets tiresome (since it's the overworld music AND the airship music from then on) it's wonderfully uplifting there. |

Originally posted by Colin As far as Seanbaby's NES list goes, it's something like 5 years old now, if not even older than that. But anyway, I disagree with, of all things, Deadly Towers being on that list. Is it bad? Yes. Is it the worst game on the NES? Certainly not; as you can probably guess, I'd give that slot to X-Men. HotL is more or less fine at #2. |

Hard to update the list five years later.
I mean, I could probably make a good top 50 list of the worst games ever, but if I looked at every game and then picked my 50... the list would certainly be subjective. It's slightly easier than a top 50, but that's about it. |

Final Fantasy Adventures: Square completely broke away from the formula. The game kind of resembles the Legend of Zelda

Well, in all fairness, FFA is part of a completely different series, Seiken Densetsu, the second game of which was released here as Secret of Mana. SD1 was merely released here under the "Final Fantasy" label to get some name recognition...kind of like Dr. Mario

I fail to see how anyone can write a list of the worst NES games and NOT include Action 52, unless they're only including licensed games. Seanbaby kinda does this, but he makes an exception for Bible Adventures, which blows Action 52 out of the water. I mean, all the games on Bible Adventures actually works!

Pac-Land on NES (I think that was the name of it- I know it was some Pacman platformer)... Crappy graphics, and the controls were awful- A and B made you go left and right, and the arrow keys were the jump buttons...

Trying to make an argument for FFA being one of the worst is going to be tough, I think.
Didn't at least one or two games work on Action 52? (And by work, I mean be playable despite the fact that the game itself absolutely sucked/was too slow/etc.) |
