First of all, I blame the companies for this.

My grandpa had recently had went to the hospital a few days ago. I was completly oblivious for a whole day.

When I got to his bedside, he was jerking and pulling in pain. He said "Hi boys." to me and my brothers, and maybe not thirty seconds later, he said "Hi boys." again. He kepted moving around. He whispered to all of us, "Help me." He even thought the room was covered in water and bumble bees were all over the ceiling. He's losing his mind. He couldn't even remember smoking, nor what year it is.

Today he loses his mind, sorta. He looks and the bars thats supposed to hold him up and said, "I bet I can pee through that." I was, like, WOAH. He never says anything like that.

So here I am praying for my grandpa. Discuss the situation or cancer itself.

I have to disagree somewhat with you, I don't blame the companies.
They clearly label the side effects of smoking on every package, and everyone in the world by now knows the smoking is bad for you, and causes cancer. If someone still, despite this knowledge, chooses to smoke, that's their fault. Companies are just trying to make a living selling what sells. Would you blame McDonalds for making people fat, too? =\

My grandpa also died of cancer, though I wasn't born yet. I know it's sad, and having to see if firsthand is probably hard... just cherish him while you can, and be sure you get a goodbye. There's nothing worse than not getting a goodbye.

Part of the blame lies with the companies because of everything that they put into the cigarettes. I mean, if you look through the ingredient list you're just scratching your head wondering why item X would even be in it for no apparent reason.

As for Riku's grandpa's symptoms... um, where exactly is the cancer? If it's in the brain/spread to there... ouch. If not, it's probably whatever drugs they're giving him that are causing him to seem out of touch. Just a hunch.

*coughcyanidecough*

http://quitsmoking.about.com/cs/nicotineinhaler/a/cigingredients.htm And thats just a-c.

Anyway. I can kinda sorta relate. My great grandmother is going through something similer, though its not from cancer. I'm sure its much harder for you, than it is for me. I was never particularly close to my great grandmother, however she was always a source of great pride for me. Not only is she the last full blooded italian in our family, she actually came over from italy as a little girl. I've always thought that was awesome, and derived a lot of my...lets call it "pride by proxy" from her.

She was moved to a home early last year. I hadnt seen her for a few years, but when she went to visit, she didnt really recognise me. She did...but she thought I was someone else. Someone who was in the room with us. That was hard for me.

And then, just the other day, I lost a cousin around my age to leukemia. I havent seen any of our mutual family since he died, but he was always loved by everyone and I know theyre hurting right now. My heart goes out to them all.

I dont think anyone is really to blame. Your grandfather probably started smoking way back in the day, before anybody, even the companies really knew whats actually IN tobacco and what happens to people who smoke it. Back then, it was cool. The thing to do. A mark of society and culture. Its not anybody elses fault any more than it is his. True, he should have quit when he learned exactly what they do to people, but I dont think he's really "to blame." You might blame him now, in your blind rage and sorrow over his condition, and you'd probably be well justified to do so. But I hope you dont let it distract you from making the best of the time you have left together, and Im confident that you'll make your peace and forgive him, in the end.

The point is that there are people there who love you to help you through the rough times, and even here there are people who understand what youre going through, and you know what? There always will be. Thats something that can be easy to lose track of.

I agree, half the shit in cigarettes doesn't need to be in there. Like American food, American cigarettes go through more processing, which generally makes the product less healthy.

I think the companies are somewhat (though not entirely) to blame, for marketing an item which is known to be highly addictive and also deadly at the same time. Why dont they use their billions of dollars to make a non-addictive cigarette? Greed...

I still fail to see how it's the companies' fault. They tell you what is in the cigarette, and tell you it's addictive, and tell you it can cause cancer, it's whether or not you're smart enough to avoid them. Just don't start smoking and you'll be fine. James Dean needs to be rekilled for making people think it's sexy. >8( (I'm aware there were probably people before him who made it look cool, he's just the first that comes to mind. Please don't h8).

But its often-times clandestinely marketed to minors who then get hooked on the addictiveness of it. If i only had a dollar for every person i've known who wanted to quit, but simply lacked the will-power to beat the addiction....

Um, unless the kid is 10 or something, "minors" know that smoking is bad for just as well as any adult does. If they lack the intelligence to not start, that's not the companies' fault. =\ And I don't know of any kids smoking that are too young to know of the ill effects it has on a person.

Everybody makes mistakes in life. Picking up smoking is one of them. Its not stupidity or anything, just a mistake. The fact that cigarettes are highly addictive just makes it very hard to recover from that mistake.

His grandpa probably didn't start smoking in the 90s, when labels were tossed on.

He probably started smoking way back in the day, when it was ENCOURAGED by the tobacco companies and people were told it was HEALTHY. Thus causing the pre-mature deaths of lots of people's grandparents and giving us a lovely legacy of cancer

Anywhoo, I remember when my great-grandparents were dying...Oh, it's painful. I can fully sympathize with you.

...I just lost my grandpa yesterday.

He had this thing for taking in air, shaking as he reached for my hand. I held tightly. "I love you", he managed to say. I hadn't ate breakfast, so I went to eat across the street at McDonalds. I haven't seen him since.

However, my mom told countless stories on what happened. About three hours before he died, he was looking up his own casket. He said, "Leah, get me this one where the water doesn't sink through and my body won't decay." My mom didn't like the sound of where he was going.

Then out of the blue he says, "Luke's always breaking windows (My younger brother), and Matthew is always peeing on my truck (My other younger brother), and Trent's always messing with my computer. (Me )" Now I have two computers. But that wasn't worth the loss of grandpa.

I've been crying for the past day. Someone help me.

Take comfort in knowing that all of us here are here to help.

I dunno about you guys, but shortly after a loved-ones death, your "In Real Life" friends seem to stray away from the subject, and just offer an apology, when all you really feel like doing is talking about the good times you shared with the loved one.

I can relate to you. I lost my father a few years back, and have never known my mother.
Sure, it wasn't from lung cancer, but cancer none-the-less. He was a heavy smoker, too.

I smoke myself, but after a few days without smoking, I don't get "cravings". I guess it's just because I've had to give up a habbit before, and that was pretty damn hard to do. (Marijuana for anyone wanting to know, and it took about a week of cold sweats, non-eating, and plain 'hell' to get over it.)

Maybe the people who're so addicted to cigarettes have just as hard a time giving them up as I did with my old habbit. If anyone here is addicted to something, or have given up something, they'll tell you that the best way to give something up, is to not have access to it. It makes the proccess so much easier.

I aggree with you, man. The companies should take a huge chunk of the blame, for they are the ones selling the shit.
Alot of people here say "But you knew the risks.", but it doesn't make it right for them to be selling it. If they're so bad, why sell it?

Anyway! Remember the good times.
The pain will ease in a short while, and then you'll find yourself talking about his life with your family. You can find out alot of shocking and pretty damn funny things about him just by talking to someone who was close to him -- say your mother for example.

Just an example: My dad used to get teased pretty badly at school, and my aunty (who is two years younger) used to beat the shit out of the people who caused crap in my dad's life.

Just look forward to your talks 'n stuff!

aww, man...
My sympathies are with you, that would suck to lose your grandpa...
I haven't lost any close family, but I know what it's like, my best friend lost his grandma last year, he was messed up for a while.

Hope you get over it as quickly as you can
