Programs doing things that they've never done before for absolutely no reason.

Case in point: sometimes when I click on pages in lololol that re-direct me to downloads (as in the site choosing the download from several servers, not a download itself), the browser just closes. Hasn't happened before but just started to a couple of days ago. I mean, all I did was modify some settings so I can access my modem's config pages, which should have NOTHING to do with this.

Yep, Windows loves to do that. Just a few hours ago, when I moved the mouse away from the taskbar, the button that it was over wouldn't be highlighted anymore. Suddenly it's stopped doing this; the button stays highlighted as if the mouse were still over it. Not a big deal but argh if it gets back to how it was before I rebooted, where any mouse movement while clicking a button would make it permenantly highlighted (as if it were active) until I switch to it.

Also for a few hours before that reboot, Winamp's main window was missing its top left corner, just like the titlebars in my current theme. Windows had suddenly decided to apply the same clipping effect to Winamp as to title bars. I simply can't imagine what sort of weird programming would allow for this to happen without anything going horribly wrong (you'd think at least the window would be really messed up).

Of course most of these things go away when I reboot, but not all of them. Several months ago my Start menu started to just not redraw certain areas, and this problem survived many reinstalls and an upgrade of everything except my CD-ROM, only to disappear about a month ago. Also ever since a month or two ago, Gaim gives me some 'no disk in \device\dr18' message when I start it. Frickin weird.

Or my suggestion is to stop using the My First PC Operating System (aka Windows). Switch over to something like Fedora Core or even Ubuntu (the installer is a bit weird on Ubuntu). Also don't jump onto the more advanced things like Gentoo or Slackware until you're ready (you'll know when you are, basically when you get sick of working around Fedora Core or Ubuntu instead of working with it)

I told you on AIM, I don't intend to do anything like that until I can get a DVD burner to back up my files. (Got $29 exactly so far... could take a while.)

Yes, but not everybody is a "tinkerer", which you have to be to a large extent to enjoy using Linux.

That's one of my annoyances with Linux. Some things work fine "out-of-the-box" so to speak, and for the things that don't, there's some tinkering to do. Tinkering is fine, if you're one of those people that is that way inclined. Hell, I find it fun from time to time. But Linux made me put on my tinkering hat too often and too frequently; and it's nice sometimes if something just plain works with minimal effort on my behalf.

But then, that's why I'm on a Mac now. Windows pissed me off. Linux pissed me off too. OS X so far.... has not pissed me off. Except for the thing with the Finder.

You don't need that much to get a decent burner, HH. Mine only cost me $90 or so and it's a REALLY good one that hasn't failed me yet.

I'm one of those rare people who have actually tried Linux and absoloutely hated it.

I don't have time to screw around in a console, changing every detail and compiling programs if I want to run them. I just want shit that works and does the job; Linux is more about providing junk 'open source' software that no one improves (someone else will, right?)... Windows usually has most software development, software that works, and generally hasn't failed me at all (unless someone else uses it, hah)

Personally, every time I hear someone call Windows some stupid name like that and suggest switching to Linux, I want to punch them. You don't switch to a car with hundreds of buttons that you need to turn and push daily to get it to work, especially if your current no-bullshit car works fine, right?

The only real annoyance I have is that blinking windows bring up the taskbar -- several IM clients have this 'feature' and many (HELLO MSN MESSENGER PLEASE DIE THANKS) have no option to turn it off... as nice as it is, I prefer it when my taskbar stays hidden until I need it. I have sounds on for a reason, thanks.

(if anyone knows of some small tweak I can do to get it to not pop up Windows 98 style, please let me know)

Funny you mention that. Gaim, which is open-source, has that option. It also doesn't suck like the official MSN/AIM clients and most third-party ones.

First off, I'll admit that calling Windows a name is pretty stupid but it really feels that way to me. Secondly, how is this just working? One of the main reasons I stopped using Windows was because I didn't want to work around all the little and big flaws it has.

Plus there's a big difference between Linux distros that just work out of the box for people who are new to the OS or to a computer (Fedora Core, (K)Ubuntu, SuSE) and distros designed for people who like to take control of every little bit of the OS (Gentoo, Slackware). And then there's some distros I have no idea where they stand (Debian, PCLinuxOS)

Didn't people call the look in Win XP "The fisher price look?" btw.

Which is something I agree with, hehe....

Sure you have to screw around with the Linux distro to make it work like you want, but same is somewhat true for Windows too... (Whenever i'm on a computer that isn't my own, I get annoyed at some of the default stupid settings). At least Linux dosen't seem to randomly break at times (Hi Direct-x!).

- Windows Tripple Click Bug (Mouse button mysteriously clicks 3 times on everything, you must reinstall windows to fix it.)
- VB6 Re-Registering the same OCX controls over and over every time you compile a user control. So you have like 2000 registry keys in the CLSID, all for your user control.
- When you drag items on IE's quicklaunce bar, they sometimes have a semi transparent image of when you drag it, and it gets stuck on your screen. You have to kill explorer.exe and reload it to get rid of it.
- When you have Windows XP start bar set to classic mode, the Recent Files List is allowed to get bigger then normal, infact it sometimes scrolls and takes up the entire screen.
- Tooltips on the taskbar dont show up, I WANT THE DATE DAMNIT!!
- ATI TV and ATIMMC.EXE randomly freezes while i'm trying to watch TV, and there is simply no possible way to kill it in Task Manager. DONT EVEN TRY, it won't let you kill it. It's almost like a virus made by ATI.
- When you switch themes and winamp is open, you cant drag winamp to the top of your screen, there is like a 10 pixel gap you cant get rid of.
- Winamp has crappy equilizer presets.
- "DJ Java Decompiler" used to be a free program, now the dickwad is charging for it.
- Programs that are a trail period and over 95% of the program is disabled. How am I sopossed to know if I like it if almost everything is disabled and I can only use it for 5 days? F**K YOU I WONT BUY YOUR S**T!!
- ATI Video Card Drivers SUCK!! ALL OF EM! ESPECIALLY CATYLIST
- QuickTime Movies lock up my computer!! DONT PUT QUICK TIME MOVIES ON THE INTERNET!!!
- Most tech support places for the computer using idiots in Bangel, India and they don't speak english that well.
- Instructions are written for so many languages they usually dont make sense at all because they had to make enough room to write it in 8 languages XD.
- School computers are usually peices of junk, some are older then you!
- Schools that wait until there mainframe is obsolete then complain it will cost a fortune to replace it.
- Schools that give you only 5 MB of space on the server!
- Schools that are dumb enough to make an easy password system.
- America Online sending me those crappy CD's every month...I DONT WANT AOL!!!

Sounds more like a broken mouse to me.

Rather, complain to the Java authors that they haven't made their program Free Software. However, decompiling bytecode can be fun, I admit. It's pretty surprising how many Flash games have database username/passwords hard coded into the ActionScript... just becuase Macromedia doesn't provide a bytecode decompiler doesn't make it impossible

AOL CDs make me wish CDRs had never been invented; only CDRWs. Then instead of wasted plastic that ends up in a landfill, we'd be getting 700MB of free storage space with every AOL CD that we get, as well as those driver CDs that come with things like mice that you never even bother installing. (Like what the hell, I don't need a mouse driver, it's an ordinary PS/2 mouse that works with every computer made in the last 15 years out of the box.)

AOL stopped using CD-Rs shortly after they started. It's all silver-pressed CDs since mid-1999, not appendable at all.

I still use an AOL 3.0 floppy as a boot disk. If there was ever one quality thing to come out of AOL, it was their floppy disks.
