I did it! Despite the setbacks caused by glitches, Super Mario Starlight is finished! I'm playing through it right now. So far, I haven't encountered any problems. I took Chaos Force's advice and created a backup of the ROM itself. You can download the finished product at SMW Central!

Err, yeah.

Though, I'll admit some screenshots posted in this thread would be appreciated. Personally, I like to know what I'm getting into before downloading a hack.

I played 3 levels and I didn't feel like playing anymore. I really don't like hacks which take the original levels and edit them a little. Please use the control + delete function the next time you make a hack. It's the first thing you should press when you start making your own level.

Dude. That was the entire point of his hack (editing the original levels). Oh, and I would at least want to see ONE screenshot of some of your recent progress. I saw the earlier ones, but want just a little more.

this hack is boring. i see how you finished it so fast as it's just the original levels with more platforms and coins. almost anyone could probably make this hack in a day or two minus all the random background and palette editing.

although i didn't have the patience to play through the whole thing i did notice that there's an original level or 2 in there - those were nice surprises.

oh and you might want to fix the title screen since mario dies in it, forcing the player to reset.

I'm sorry I even wasted your time (and your disk space) on a half-baked hack. I should've kept it to myself. I think it's fun. Since I blabbed about my hack, tell me what else I did wrong. Is it too easy? Do my world theme choices suck? There's gotta be other reasons why you people don't like Starlight. Should I just quit hacking SMW, or keep going? I was so happy when I got this hack done, until I found out you all would hate it. To quote Aimless from The Rebirth part 2, "What do you expect, I'm new at this!" Oh well...I guess that ROM hacking, like RPGs, isn't my strong point.

Mm'kay, self-pity and internet forums don't mix. As for the not liking your hack, that's a common occurance. Rarely do people make a good hack on their first try. Take some time making sure each separate level is new and fun. Edit the overworld. Rehaul the levels. These are things that are expected of a hack, and many of us will pull no punches when we see a hack not up to code.

As long as you learn from your mistakes, you should be alright. Put more time into the levels and edit the overworld. Look for hacks that other people have made, and if they're good, see why, and if they're bad, do the opposite. Think up the wackiest levels you can manage as long as they're fun and not ugly or something.

You could quit rom hacking. I can't see you being missed much here, or tinkering with Super Mario games helping you much in life. Such is the way of the internet. But if you really enjoy it, just keep working on making better hacks and you'll get to the point where we enjoy your hacks as well. I recommend learning about assembly and the 65c816 processor and changing more than Lunar Magic can. Even if rom hacking never works for you knowing the assembly basics is a nifty skill to have. That, and even slight assembly hacks can totally change the way a game works.

Programming really isn't my thing. I'm more of an artist. That's why I spend more time trying to change the look of the level rather than the technical stuff. It's also why I like Lunar Magic. I can manipulate the levels and I don't have to write ANY code. When I announced my hack and it got bashed because everyone thought it would suck, I told them I'm no programmer. One reply stated that you don't have to know anything about ASM to make a good hack. This person said he's seen really good hacks in which the creators didn't need to write any code. He may have been lying just to cheer me up, but I choose not to believe that.

You don't need to learn ASM totally; as long as you can make a bunch of levels with a lot of puzzles, and tricks to get around, it can be fun. I haven't done any ASM programming, but still everyone liked my level design, because I enriched beautiful pallettes in my hack, and I've made the levels fun, and changed them totally. I played your hack, and I was NOT impressed, but you can do fine if you keep trying, I did. I've done this for a while, and i still can not figure out that stinkin' OW editing, but I'm learning, you'll do fine if you really like doing it.

Thanks. I'm working on improving Starlight. Remember, you can use my hack as a base for yours.

Don't work on improving Starlight. Starlight is unrecoverably bad. And if you're an artist, why is it that your hack contains no art?

See, stupid me thought that it wouldn't matter if I hadn't played the hack before I posted because I figured I knew a thing or two about bad hacks and yours would be no different.

But it was. It was really, really bad.

No, you don't need ASM to make a good hack, but it certainly helps. All it takes is a few hacks to code that's run every frame and the game can be drastically different.

I've revamped almost everything in Garden City. I've also changed the Dragon Coins to Star Coins. Since I know a little more about tweaking existing 16x16 tiles, I've been able to transfer foreground tiles into the background and vice versa. It's amazing what you can do without using ExGFX. I'm also making the levels flow together. Even the first Switch Palace has been tweaked further than before.
BTW, regarding the title screen problem, I don't have ZSNES on my computer. When I last checked, the system requirements for it called for an Intel Celeron (minimum) processor. I think my PC has an AMD K-8. It's really out-dated. My computer used to be my mom's.

Yes! ExGFX really put's a hack on the map!! You should take your time on it, and do not at all copy a level in SMW and just change it around a bit; too many hacks do that; completly change the levels. That's my advice.

The reason I'm not editing the overworld (beyond palette swapping) is because I'm afraid of screwing up my hack. I just gave the Bob-ombs little wind-up keys and made the fire flower look more "classic" I'm almost finished with the levels in Marble Mountain.

That's just the media and company exaggerating things. ZSNES runs at full speed on my Pentium 2, except in Netplay mode. On a Pentium 1, I noticed it still ran nearly full speed, although you couldn't use the speed up nor the slow down features. So yeah, don't worry too much about it.

Now you can check out a demo of SM Starlight DX. I should have some screenies ready when this one's finished. There is a problem with animated water. It acts like a ledge during gameplay, but the tooltip for the animated water tiles in LM indicate that it's water. Tide levels must hate me I've been doing a lot of work in the 8x8 and 16x16 tile editors. I hope you all like it.
