Jack's unfocused gaze became alert, and he realized that he had been absently staring at Jared. Slightly confused, he shook it off.

Jack: "Eh, it's nothing. Let's try to get the rest of the tentacles off!"

The Insane was already making it hard for Jack to focus, but he wouldn't be rendered senseless like Atrats had just yet. With a new burst of energy, Jack ran ahead and made a high, flipping jump to grab onto a pipe, and then swung himself up and landed balancing perilously above the brain. The monster used one of its two remaining tentacles to grab up onto the pipe, and Jack saw that it was about to rip it from beneath him. Quickly, he dashed forward and stepped onto the tentacle, using its mucus to slide down the length like a disgusting flesh slide. Careful not to pass up the opportunity to make his opponent suffer, Jack dragged his dagger behind him as he slipped down, drawing a wet red gash behind him the whole way. He finally neared the end of the ride, and leapt from the tentacle so that instead of crashing against the brain's side he landed on its top, using the force of the fall to shove his dagger into it.

So far, so good. He had a safe position on top of the Insane (which was partly on top of the power ring he created), and the tentacle he sliced was now only making limp movements. Bending forward on one knee to grasp onto the embedded dagger, Jack held his other arm up and charged some shadows to his hand for another Dark Ball technique.

Jack: "Stupid beast. You'll be afraid of the dark after this..."

It took a moment for Jack to snap out of his Daze, but Jared was relieved when he finally did. Hopefully the Insane wouldn’t find a way to pry into his mind as well.

If you say so…Let’s finish this pathetic thing.

There were only two left, so it shouldn’t prove to be too difficult. Jack had already leapt into action and succeeded in wounding a third tentacle, leaving the last one to him. Looking more like a wagging tail now than a menacing arm, the remaining healthy tentacle flailed about aimlessly, revealing the obvious pain of the beast from the loss of its other appendages. Running up to it, he rose his sword above his head and jumped over the tentacle as it swept under his feet like a giant jump rope, and succeeded in planting his sword into the muscular flesh. The angered arm rose high into the air, leaving Jared to watch his weapon be carried away, though not in vain. The area where the sword was stuck began to turn black, and the darkness quickly spread over the rest of the arm in vine-like trails. After only a few seconds, the tentacle began to wither, the outer layer of its skin peeled off revealing the disgusting innards with soon faded to black as well. The darkness stopped at the place where the tentacle met the brain as it dropped from the body, smoldering, to the floor.

His sword now lay on the floor beside the decaying remains of flesh, the brilliant purplish black glow on the blade beginning to face. Picking up his weapon, he was rather pleased. After all, what could the brain do by itself without the tentacles to thrash them around? As long as he and Jack kept their minds closed, killing this sucker shouldn’t be too far into the future. Looking up, he saw Jack was atop the monstrous brain, with his dagger jammed into the lobes as he charged dark energy in his right hand. Yes, the end was so near now, he could almost taste it.

Yesss…Finish it, Jack.

Jack held onto his dagger atop the thrashing beast as if it were the reins to a distempered horse, while the deadly black ball in his hand grew to an amazing size. Hearing Jared cheer him on, he looked back, raised his eyebrows, and fired the ball directly into the top of the brain. Immediately, it stopped its flaying as the shadows covered its body, filling the intricate folds in its tissue and then eating through to the core. Jack jumped down to study the damage from below.

In a few moments, the entire thing was disintegrated, leaving behind only a puddle of gray mucus.

Jack: "Ehum. I've had so much fun today I think I might choke. ...I'll close the portal - "

Jack motioned at the green ring around them, meaning to dispel it (the power ring too), but before he could, the face of a hideous black and white snake burst out and roared angrily.

Jack: "Sandworm! Awwwww!!! No you don't!!! Get in there!"

Hurriedly, he waved his hand and the ring shrunk into a little vortex, pulling the sandworm back inside and disappearing with a squeak. Jack let out a relieved sigh. Finally, the monsters were gone for good.

Now that the danger was out of the way, he could realize just how bad of a beating he had taken. He grinned at the pain that he felt throbbing all over, where he'd been cut and bruised, and covered in all sorts of slime and blood.

Atrats snapped out of his lunacy to make the pain all the worse.

Atrats: "Whoh - ow - oh! Didja seeit? Didjaseeit? That brain! It was spittin' niarbs!"

He teleported to Jack's side in a puff of intoxicating smoke.

Atrats: "Good thing buddy 'ol Jared was here to save our skins! But I'da beatin' that monster in fi' seconds if I di'un have this dreadful pain in my poor little wingy... boo..."

The death sprite feebly wiggled its shriveled bat wing before an irritated Jack. He was better unconscious... Atrats pretended to snap to attention, being fully aware of his annoying behavior to start.

Atrats: "Oh wait, that's where you hit me, dearest friend Jack. Pbthpbthpbthpbth!"

Not giving anyone a chance to speak, he floated fast circles up around Jared, staring at him with theatrical sadness.

Atrats: "What will become of Jared now, I wonders? Is he gonna go now? Boo..."

Jack: "Well, I'm sure he won't be sticking around here. If he's anything as smart as he seems, he'd get away before Atrats could get too attached to him."

Jack gave a small smile, then stood up from a fallen stone and stretched.

Jack: "Where will you go, Jared? Pain to think we shouldn't meet again. You're not as bad as the rest of the living."

Jack's gaze veered off blankly to the side as it often did. He wouldn't be staying for any more soul scoping in the sewer with those monsters roaming around. Besides, the days and nights down there had tired him out... he longed to get some air again, see the moon.

It gave him some sick satisfaction, watching the darkness spread over the brain like a plague. Perhaps because he knew that all of it was over now. Seeing the mucus bubble grotesquely seemed to bring everything to a close. Jack’s voice brought his mind back to reality and reminded him of the portal.

Seeing the snake try and fight through the portal made his world come crashing down. Although it looked really cool, he had done enough fighting for the day and couldn’t say that he wanted to do anymore. He let out a sigh of relief as he saw it’s vicious face disappear, along with the portal. It was finally over.

Looking himself over, the damage wasn’t half bad. He hadn’t taken too bad of a beating, considering the monsters came out worse in the end. More than anything, he was tired and longed to go home, after getting something to eat. Once again, he was seized from his day-dreaming by the shrill voice of the sprite, Atrats. Rather than causing his blood to boil, the lil’ cretin seemed to add a spectrum of fun and excitement to the hell they had just endured. Even though he hadn’t done much, he had still helped in his own, miniscule ways. He let a small smile creep its way over his face and rolled his eyes as Atrats boasted of his abilities.

Atrats’s inquiry brought his thoughts back to the state they had been in before: home. Though he wouldn’t admit it, he had gotten attached to the lil’ bugger, or could at least tolerate him anyway. As for Jack, it pleased him to think that he had acquired a friend, as they were in very, very short supply, Jack being the only one. Returning his sword to its sheathe, he looked at Atrats who was swarming around his head.

Well, seeing as how I don’t live in the sewers…I won’t be staying here. I’ll probably grab some food and head home. But don’t worry…” he flicked Atrats in the nose, “You haven’t seen the last of me…but could we continue this above ground? The lovely aroma of the sewer is finally starting to bother me.” Looking over his shoulder, he noticed he still had his wings. If the humans in the city saw that they would have a fit and it would be even harder for him to try and fit in with the crowd. Stretching them out fully, they slowly began to sink into his back as if they were going through a portal. The sound of bones crunching and readjusting echoed through the tunnels as it had done when he grew them, until the only thing left to betray their presence were the two holes in the back of his jacket. With that, he jumped back up through the hole he had fallen through and landed next to the sidewalk. How long had they been down there? The sky was pitch black and not a person was in sight on the streets.

After cracking his neck, he turned to Jack and chuckled. “Thanks, you’re not as bad as the rest of the…not-living. What about you two? Will you continue your search for your friend?

Jack shortly followed Jared with a leap out of the hole, and Atrats buzzed close behind him. He squinted slightly under the light of the moon, which reflected brightly off of his pale skin.

Jack: "I'll take some time to rest first. I really need it. And, I've been itching to visit Halloween Town for a while... besides, something must be going on in the Netherworld if there's so many monsters abroad, so it's not safe to go scoping again any time soon. But I will continue shortly. That really is my only purpose now... ...finding her lost soul."

Atrats quivered at Jack's melancholy.

Atrats: "...Yeah, and I'm hung-y. I'se only had rat carcasses these past few days. Gruesome shtuff. Pehhhhhhhhh!"

Jack held out his thin, stitched hand to Jared for a shake and smiled faintly.

Jack: "Time for us to go. Hey, if Life ever gets too mundane for you, just give a call. I'll hear you."

Atrats cracked. Overwhelmed by the sadness of parting, he burst into oily tears and sobbed like a maniac all over Jared.

Atrats: "Bye Jared! We miss you! Uh boo hoo hoohhhh! Bye - bye... sob..."

Despite the cool night air that circled around them, Jared managed a warm smile. The liquid silver of the moon flowed down from oblivion, causing his white skin to radiate brightly also.

"Halloween Town, eh? That sounds like fun! Hope the Netherworld returns to its..er...normal state soon and you are able to finally find your friend."

He extended his hand, returning Jack's gesture kindly with his smile still in place. That is, until Atrats was overcome by a shower of tears using him as something of a tissue. Even then he couldn't help but smile reassuringly and pat the lil' sprite on the back.

"Don't worry, It's been too much fun today to forget you two characters, no doubt we'll find eachother again someday. Ta-ta!"

He gave them a two-finger salute and turned around to leave. Atrats's mention of food reminded him of his first intention: shopping. Before heading home, he stopped by the gas station store wth the flickering neon-light that read, 'Open', for a sandwich and a Mountain Dew.

Jack watched Jared walk off into the distance, and then dropped his gaze to the ground, observing the details of the concrete while he thought. There went his only friend as well... aside from the death sprite, of course. The thought of returning to his dreary afterlife disheartened him, but he had work that had to be done. Something was going on in the land of the dead, and he didn't like it. Maybe he'd even risk a visit soon.

Atrats: "Hey Jacks, d'j'you die again? Fine, stand there all night, I'm goin'!

Jack: "Huh? Oh... right. Let's get out of here."

Still solemnly staring at the road, he and Atrats were surrounded by a wispy black smoke cloud that rose out of the ground, and were gone when it cleared a moment later.
