There was a faint echo of murmuring voices and slow footsteps that drifted through the dark catacombs of the old sewers deep below the Sim Battle Arena. The enormous, old-fashioned stone dungeons had long since been abandoned, and were now only full with still, thick, black water. They were also utterly dark, except for an eerie green glow that came from one of the largest chambers.

Jack slumped on a ratty bag against the far wall of the chamber, intently focused on a green-glowing ethereal sphere that floated in front of him. As he deeply concentrated on the orb, picking and plucking at it intermittently with his hands, he was doing his best to completely ignore the odd chattering thing that hovered beside him. It was a small, twisted excuse for a being that was sticky with stinking black ooze - Atrats the death sprite, for the most part Jack's friend. And it wouldn't shut up.

Atrats: "... and of course they don't even have phones in the Seventh Circle, so it was a bit of a problem canceling the demon strippers, but I'm sure if Dratuu was there she'd - "

Jack winced suddenly, and the orb flared to his response.

Jack: "Don't. You. Ever. Mention that possibility. I don't want to imagine her somewhere like that."

After a pause, Jack continued his work at the orb, leaving Atrats dumbfounded. But he was soon stuttering to a start again.

Atrats: "...Buh, gr, uh t-t-t - Hey, come on now, Jackface. She was a pretty awful fleshy in life, but she wasn't that terrible... you'll find her soon, and she'll be fine, eh? This place is reeeaaaallll close to the Netherworld, you know, if you’ll get any reception it’s here… How is your soul scopey coming? "

Jack sternly focused on the sphere with all his being. Hazy images resembling faces swirled in and out of its wavering surface, barely discernable amongst each other.

Jack: “I’m getting nothing at all. Not the slightest sign… Atrats, why don’t you go into the other chamber? Really, you’re terribly bothersome. Go guard the entrance or something, I’d hate for some stupid mortal to come wandering in here.”

Atrats: “Huh? Er… yeah, fine, I’ll guard der… stinkening entrance muzzle… you’re too grouchy anyway…

Jack glanced at Atrats as he feigned dejection and hovered toward the tunnel’s entrance. He double took the soul scope when he thought he saw a familiar young girl’s face appear, but in a moment it was gone, and he solemnly resumed his searching.

Atrats grumbled with boredom as he observed water dripping from the ceiling of the tunnel. He’d been there for nearly an hour, hoping for something to break the monotony, when he thought he heard something echoing through the pipes. Judging the echoes from the pipes, he guessed that someone must have been passing by over him on the surface.

Atrats: “Hmm, oh boy, a flesh toy, I thinky! Finally something fun… they must be real dry up there, and we can’t have that, huh, Atsy?

Floating into one of the pipe’s entrances, Atrats shrieked and exploded with goo. The liquid shot up the pipe, a huge bulge on its way to the surface. Atrats gleefully followed the bulge as it traversed the pipe down the tunnel, and then turned back around to the main chamber with Jack. Giggling mischievously, he traced the bulge’s movement as it neared the ceiling, sure to explode out on the surface and make a terrible mess. Instead, it hit a clog. Under the pressure, the ooze vibrated in the pipe…

Atrats: “Eh? Hm, no fun no fun!

Jack: “Dammit, you fiend, what are you doing?”

The pipe suddenly exploded and burst a hole in the ceiling. The chamber shook, and a few seconds later a massive amount of rocks fell from the ceiling, and splashed into the canal in the center of the room. Jack stood up and looked through the dust toward the pile of rocks… among the stones, it looked like there was a person there. Suddenly worried, he turned back around and looked at his soul scope. It, fortunately, was unharmed.

Atrats: “Oh, uh, look at that. Funny how I had nothing to do with it! Heh heh! Yeah.

Jack shot Atrats a look of pure, unrefined hatred and pulled his dagger from his cloak. He walked to the edge of canal and studied the rocks, from under which a figure was coming to.

Jack: “Hey, are you alright down there? Not everyone can take a fall like that.”

Hopefully he, she or it wouldn’t be too mad… or too powerful, if that was the case.

A long, black trenchcoat flared in the wind as he walked down the street. Emerald eyes searched people's faces for signs of lonlieness, longing, vulnerability... Oh how he despised humans...So frail and pathetic, though sadly, residing in one of their pathetic bodies was the only way he could keep from being found out for what he really was. Oh well, at least the body he had found wasn't too bad. Afterall, it could've been a lot worse. What if he was stuck being some 500lb. stinky, fat man? Always sweating and puffing for air- no. Shaking his head, he forced the grotesque picture from his mind. Luckily, the body he had found was in much better condition than that.

As he walked, he kept his head low, as he always did, causing long strands of jet black hair to fall in front of his stunning green eyes. The rest of his hair spiked up in the back, adding to his already dark appearance. His skin was a bit on the pale side, but what more could one expect from a demon? Random piercings of silver adorned his ears, as well as the spiked bracelets that decorated his wrists. A bit on the flashy side, some might say, but he seemed to fit in with the 'dark' cliche perfectly fine.

He had just returned from the supermarket and had purchased a few groceries. Another downside to inhabiting a human body- it needed to be constantly supported by food, lest it whither from existence. As he passed an open man-hole, his keen sense of hearing detected a shrill, annoying voice coming from the sewers below. He stopped and peered down into the forboding darkness. Though his eyesight was unmatched, he could make out nothing in the dank, deep sewers. Shrugging his shoulders, he was ready to continue on his way when he unexpectedly felt the cement disappear from beneath his feet, not even giving him time to react.

Pushing massive chunks of concrete and assorted rubble from his body, two forms were now visable before him. His paper bag that had been full of foodstuffs, now lay scattered amongst the debris. Milk oozed from the crushed plastic carton and all of the fruits he had bought were now sqished beyond recognition. It was obvious he had fallen through the street and into the abandoned sewers below. An eerie green light shone from one of the many tunnels as he made a mental note to explore this place better when he got the chance. Raising his hand to the back of his head, he cursed under his breath as he felt the warm trickle of blood sliding through his long fingers. Rising to his feet, he made an attempt to brush the fine, white dust from his dark attire without much luck at all. "I'm fine...but what the hell is that thing...?" His piercing gaze took on a startling amber hue rather than the calm tone of green they had been moments before as they narrowed in anger towards the revolting, floating creature before him.

With a slightly pained expression, Jack watched him stand up, mostly unharmed, and attempt to dust off the light powder with little success. He knew what that was like.

Jack: "That would be Atrats. He's the one who makes it impossible to rest in peace."

Atrats, quite aware that he hadn't received a complement, tumbled through the air and made a choking laugh sound. He stopped at the man's feet and looked at the mess of food on the rocky mound.

Atrats: "Oh dearsy, didn't mean to ruin your weekly shopping. Will you starve now? Will you die now? Will there be sorrow and weeping?"

Jack, rather exasperatedly, waved his hand at the green sphere and walked closer to him. A ghostly figure in the image of Jack appeared in a puff of blue mist and assumed the spot on the bag, promptly continued Jack's work at the orb.

Jack: "And you can call me Jack. Normally mortals are lucky and cannot see Atrats, or other spiritual beings like him. But you seem a little out of the ordinary. Tell me, am I right?"

Jack bent over and held out his hand to help him onto land. Atrats wheezed and sucked on the milk that was trickling down the boulders.

He continued casting a nasty glare in Atrats's direction, his gaze looked as though it could melt the strongest of statues, reducing them to nothing but a pile of dust. The little sprite's insincere voice tainted his ears like poison, and quite frankly, he would have liked nothing more than to slap the stupid look right off his vile, little face. "No, I will not starve, nor will I die. Even if I did, I doubt there would be sorrow or weeping of any sort." Jared had the tendency of getting people to dislike him, rather than approve of him. Whether it was because of his awkward appearance, or that some people could sense the dark powers surrounding his being, he was not sure and it really didn't matter to him anyway. Approval from others was not something he sought after.

Turning his attention to Jack, his eyes had once again returned to their cool state of green. "Good to meet you, Jack," the tone in which he spoke was smooth and flawless. When not in one of his foul moods, he had a rather nonchalent air about him. "You can call me Jared." It was not often that he revealed his name to others. Come to think of it, he couldn't remember the last time he had spoken it outloud. Casting another disdainful glance at Atrats, he let out a hearty chuckle. "Aye, perhaps that is because I am no mortal, though if being mortal meant not being able to see that obnoxious little cretin, I believe I would gladly accept."

Jack chuckled softly. It came out as sort of a rasped cough, though, as he wasn't used to the sort of action.

Jack: "I might just as soon take mortality too... but then..."

He unconsciously looked back at the glowing sphere behind him. No, he wouldn’t...

Atrats, finding himself now the focus of criticism, dropped his sickly happy mood. He disappeared from Jared's feet in a puff of black smoke, and reappeared right by Jack's head.

Atrats: "Well, a fine treatment for an old pal, indeed! Who guided you, when you were alone and stumbling through the Netherworld? Who helped you escape the Bereavement Ushers? ...Who helped you get a second chance at life?"

Jack's eyes shifted downward, and lost a bit of their glow as he considered Atrats's words. While Jack's gaze was away from him, Atrats shiftily glanced at the soul scope, and made a sort of hiccough. The sphere fluctuated.

Atrats: "Jacky boy! The soul scopey!"

Jack: "What? Can it be - ?"

Dropping everything else, Jack dashed over to the sphere and leapt onto the bag, falling right inside of the ghost but not even noticing it. Atrats swiveled his disgusting focus on Jared.

Atrats: "...Bye-bye."

Suddenly, Jared felt a phantom force pushing from beneath him, trying to shoot him straight into the air and out of the sewer. Whether it was strong enough to send him the whole way was to yet to be seen, if he could not move from his position fast enough to escape the force.

Atrats: "Tyeh-huh... bye-bye..."

As Jack cut his sentence short, Jared shifted his glance to the blue apparition behind him, along with what appeared to be a glowing, green orb of sorts. Never having seen anything like it in his long life, he contemplated inquiring as to what the sphere was, but was promptly interrupted by that dratted little dope, Atrats.

Jack's expression changed drastically as Atrats reminded him of past incidents that Jared knew nothing about. He felt rather awkward standing there, and even more so as he noticed the green orb thingy fluctuate in the background. Before any words could be uttered regarding what was happening, all Jared heard was Atrats's sickly voice bidding him adieu as he felt an odd sensation from beneath his body. Something was trying to launch him from the sewer, and Jared could tell it was one of the foolish sprite's litle tricks again. Well he wouldn't let him get the best of him this time...

With a sickening 'riiip', two magnificent bat-like wings sprouted from Jared's back, splicing through the human flesh of his back with the disgusting sound of popping bones echoing loudly throughout the various chambers of the sewers. Spreading his onyx wings, the tips dripped with blood, though the crimson drops were propelled ito the air along with Jared's body. With his wings spread, he was able to counter the phenominal force so he only rose but a few feet off the ground. When he felt the reassurance of his black boots on the firm ground, he turned his attention to Atrats and his eyes once again shot to that deadly warning yellow.

"Pathetic. I would advise you to stop messing around like that, you imbecile..." Looking over his shoulder at where his wings had emerged from flesh, he let out an exasperated sigh. Old wounds from where his wings had grown before had been re-opened and blood was now flowing down his back. He didn't like bringing his wings out unless he had to, it ruined his favorite shirts and left unneccessary scarring. Ignoring Atrats, he walked casually over to Jack as though none of the incident had taken place. "Soul scopey, eh? Whassat?"

Atrats quivered in awe before this new Jared.

Atrats: "Oh, a demon, are you? Fancy that..."

And, tired of the sewers, he faded out of the physical realm, taking some milk with him. Jack suddenly snapped to attention when Jared addressed him, and regarded his wings with curiosity.

Jack: "Oh, this soul scope allows me to search through the souls of the dead to locate anyone, anywhere in the spirit realm. It's much easier than actually searching myself. I chose this place to use it because there's a stronger connection to the Netherworld down here... a group of miners even died here a while back, heh heh."

Jack became a little melancholy as he stood up from the sphere, although his change in attitude was hardly noticeable as he conveyed his emotions rather limitedly.

Jack: "But I've been down here so long with no success, I'm starting to feel dead from the dullness alone..."

Jared smiled smugly as he watched Atrats disappear. Finally, the little nuisance had vanished. Maybe now he could talk to Jack about this Soul-thingy.

"You can do that?" He asked, his facial expression becoming a mix of bewilderment and excitement. Two expressions he seldom, if ever, showed. He tilted his head up to gaze around the dark sewers, it was a lot more roomy than he had thought. "This ole' place? A strong connection to the Netherworld? I'll buy that." A gleeful smirk crossed his face as the dead miners were mentioned.

Noting how quick Jack had been to jump at the soul scope when it showed the slightest signs of change, a question formed in his mind. "You, uh...lookin' for any soul in particular there, Jack?" Since he knew nothing about the Netherworld nor locating souls, he doubted he could be of any help to Jack. On the other hand...he didn't have anything else to do at the moment, so he might as well stick around.

((Oh gawd...Sorry this post is so awful It's a bit earlier in the night for me to be posting yet.))

It's not awful
---

Jack: "Yeah, there is one soul in particular... a friend of mine, actually, from long ago... it's complicated, really, but her soul was lost somewhere in the spirit world..."

Judging from how tired he looked, it must have been taxing to search through the soul scope for as long as he had. Jack didn't like talking about it.

Jack: "Well, I've been working on that for a long time, and I feel like taking a break - at least as long as that ghost can take over..."

He nodded his head to show he understood. "A girl, eh? You better watch out for them, mate, they're nothin' but trouble," he gave a short chuckle, unaware that Jack may not find his comment funny in the least.

Seeing Jack was looking a bit weary of the topic, he cleared his throat. "Sorry 'bout that...Good luck in finding your friend, I'm sure she'll turn up some day." He offered a reassuring smile that for once wasn't tainted with mischief or cruelty.

"So..." he dralled in an attempt to change the subject. "What do you do when you're not gazing into the soul scope?"

Jack made the most miniscule cringe, but dismissed Jared's first comment. He appreciated his reassurance, though. Glad for the change of the topic, Jack made a sly grin.

Jack: "Well, a common past time around here, and one that I find addicting, is sparring. You know, a little friendly battle.

He turned to the side and slowly paced toward the canal, looking blankly into the water.

Jack: "You wouldn't... be interested in that sort of thing, would you?

Jack held his right hand in front of him, and his dagger appeared in a puff on blue smoke, balancing stiffly with its point on his index finger. Waiting for a response, he pushed the dagger with his other hand, causing it to spin like a top on his finger, slightly drilling into it.

His lips curled into a wily smirk that revealed his pointed, white fangs. He hadn't had a good fight in a while, and was sure Jack would prove to be quite challenging.

"Sparring, eh?" As he spoke, he held out his right hand. From his palm, something silver and pointed was pushing through his flesh and causing it to bleed. As it progressed, it became clear that the object was indeed the blade of a sword. As what remained of the hilt protruded from his open palm, he grasped the sword in his hand and twirled it about fancily. The hilt consisted of two, snarling dragon's faces complete with intricate designs and topped off with a wicked looking skull. His wings were quite dry now and he folded them neatly behind him so they wouldn't get in the way.

"I'm sure I could do with the practice..." he said deviously as he waited for Jack to try something daring.

Jack cackled with glee, tossed his dagger into the air, and quickly snatched it by the handle.

Jack: "Why, you've come prepared! Perfect."

Jack dashed forward at Jared, quickly closing the distance between them and charging power in his left hand the whole time. Halfway to the demon, he suddenly threw his dagger, which sparked blue as it spun forward. If Jared successfully dodged the blade, he would find that it would double back and try to hit him once more before returning to Jack's hand, for it was locked onto his soul. Sure, it wasn't the strongest attack, but it was a nice, flashy way to start a fight.

Jack: "Got any more tricks tucked away in that skin?"

Jack's dagger came flying through the air, headed straight for him. Quickly raising his arm, he deflected it just in time with his own blade. It fought against his sword for a moment as if it had a mind of its own, before abandoning that idea and trying a new approach. Jared hadn't expected the dagger to fight by itself like that, and was certainly surprised when it came flying straight for his heart, despite how he had averted it before. The last thing Jack saw of Jared was a shocked expression before he vanished completely, leaving the dagger flying through thin air before returning to Jack's hand.

"Oh, I've got oodles..." His voice echoed eerily throughout the entire underground, coming from no where in particular and yet...everywhere. Still unseen until the last moment, he dropped from the air onto Jack's shoulders, ebon wings outstretched, in an attempt to drive his sword right through his skull.

“Great, invisibility,” Jack muttered as Jared vanished from sight.

He kept his dagger ready as he stood still, listening for any sounds to give away Jared's position, but when he spoke his voice seemed to come from everywhere and it was impossible to tell. Suddenly Jack saw a shape appear above his head, and without even checking to see that it was Jared he spun to the side, avoiding critical damage but still receiving a long gash straight down his arm from the sword. All in one movement, Jack continued his sidestep-spin to face Jared and had made a powerful vertical slash with his dagger at him in an instant. If Jared was hit by the blade, as well as hurting him physically it would also pierce defenses to damage his soul (supposing that he had one present in his body, as is usually the case.)

After this Jack slowly made a few steps backward, and in a strangely relaxed manner he observed the sewer chamber.

Jack: "It's rather dark in here, isn't it?"

Jack held forward his hand, and in a bizarre act sucked all of the nearby shadows into his palm. The shadows converged into an enormous black ball that grew radically by the second. What was he planning?

((Ooh, we're getting wise, aren't we? XD))

He didn't expect Jack to die so easily [if a being such as Jack could even be killed], and especially not so early into their duel. The satisfactory sound of a cracking skull did not enter his ears as the only thing his blade pierced was the thick air of the sewers. A look of disappointment on his face at not even landing a hit, he fell downward landing hard on his back, only to feel a searing pain shoot through his left side. Jack's dagger must have grazed him as he fell. It still hurt even though he didn't own a soul, though it was nothing he couldn't handle.

Blood seeped from his open wound as he brought himself to his feet. Blade in hand and a scowl present on his face, he wondered wearily what Jack was up to.

"You scared of the dark?" he joked as he held up his left hand and conjured up a fireball, disposing of some of the darkness around them. He didn't like the looks of the shadow-harnessing powers occuring before him, but maybe his flame could cancel it out. With his luck, he'd be knocked flat on his back again, though he couldn't help but wonder. The flames licked madly at the air as the sphere of flame grew bigger and brighter by the second, at about the same rate as the shadow ball Jack was weilding. He waited anxiously to see what Jack would do, and if he would have to abandon his plan of extinguishing darkness with flame.

Jack raised an eyebrow, rather impressed of Jared's thinking. The light of the fireball blocked off the suction of any more shadows, and Jack's sphere stopped growing at about four feet in diameter.

Jack: "Clever, no one's tried that before."

A sinister grin crossed his face, and he narrowed his eyes.

Jack: "...Draw."

Jack released his hold of the shadow ball. It split into eight purple-black wispy beams that then zoomed at Jared, moving through the air in unpredictable waves. Each individual beam would deal only moderate shadow-based damage, but in sum they'd hurt.

A smug smile replaced the scowl on his face as he felt rather proud of his idea. Perhaps it would work afterall? The fire lit up the murky realm of the sewers and he could see great quantities of slime oozing down the walls. He was relieved to see that the shadow sphere had stopped accumulating, however, he wasn't so pleased with Jack's next move. Where the hell did he get these crazy ideas? Still, his imagination intrigued him as he came up with another hunch. Running his left hand along the blade of his sword, some of the fire transferred over, engulfing his sword in a marvellous, orange flame.

As the beams shot at him, it seemed impossible to predict where they would wind up, all he knew was that he was the target. As they came closer, he lashed out at them with his sword in a mad frenzy, some of them disappearing, others wandering off to circle back behind him. Whipping himself around, he launched the massive fireball at a group of four, but only succeeded in hitting three. He knew the last few had disappeared behind him, so he turned again and made one last attempt to rid himself of the blasted purple spheres. One more disappeared in a puff of black smoke as it merged with the flame, but for the last two, it was too late. He knew he couldn't avoid being hit with them, so he simply wrapped his wings around his body as some form of a shield, the fire of his sword shone through his wings producing an eerie silhouette as the remaining orbs stung into his wings and disappeared.

Slowly unfurling his wings, he grimaced at the searing pain as he stretched them out to examine them. Although the holes weren't nearly burnt all the way through the membrane, he knew it would take a while to heal and he wouldn't be able to fly for a while without causing himself extreme pain. Folding his wings behind his back once more with a solemn expression, he turned to face Jack.

"Perhaps that's because you've never fought anyone quite like me before."

Jack watched Jared skillfully wave his blade around, successfully deflecting six of the wispy shadows where an average fighter would have only blocked two or three. He was awed by the amazing silhouette that the flaming sword made on his wings, but he didn't do much to show it.

Jack: "Very nice. Hope you can find another imaginative way outta this one, Jared."

He made a high leap backward and flipped through the air, landing on the shady island of rubble in the middle of the channel that was untouched by the light of Jared's sword. He smirked as he held out both of his hands, and cupped his fingers so as to make his arms imitate open-mouthed serpents. Notably stranger than this behavior were the dark shadows of two snakes that appeared on the ground, dark even against the gloom-obscured floor. The shadowy serpents, mimicking Jack's arms movements, slid swiftly across the ground toward Jared, tracing the surface of the uneven floor that made unpredictable changes in their trajectory. As they came upon Jared, they tried to maneuver past the ring of light that his sword provided. If he couldn't fend them off (and it'd take more than a few second's exposure of light to get rid of them), they'd soon cover him with their shadowy bodies, biting and snapping at no actual physical part of him but still they'd drain his life force.

Jack: "Ah, shadowmancing, one of my favorite hobbies. Heh heh heh heh…"

He almost grimaced at the sound of Jack's words. What could he possibly do that would be worse than that? Sure enough, his question was answered, and he began to wish he had never even asked it.

Eying Jack warily, he dreaded what was to come. What was he thinking, fighting this guy in the middle of an abandoned sewer anyway? Oh well, he'd find a way out of it, he always did. Afterall, this was just a duel. A friendly engagement. Neither of the two had actual intent to kill, or at least that's what he kept telling himself. For the moment, he was consoled and quite confident as he waited to see what Jack would throw at him.

He had to admit, Jack looked quite odd standing atop the rubble as if he were trying to make shadow puppets without any light. Then, moving across the uneven terrain, were two, shadowy figures. Jared didn't like the look of this one bit, though his expression did not reveal his worries. As they got closer, he took his sword and drew an imaginary circle on the ground around him with the tip of his blade. Within seconds, the circle glowed red and a wall of flames sprouted from the floor, surrounding him in light. He knew it wouldn't repel the vile shadows for long, but it would give him the time he needed to execute his plan.

A sly smile spread over his face as he set own his sword and rose his hands above his head. His expression transformed from dismal to furtive in a matter of seconds as he cast his own shadow puppet on the wall of the now illuminated sewer. The shadow seemed to take on a life of its own as the twin serpents had, as what looked like the form of a wolf slid down the wall towards the two snakes. Gaping mouth full of menacing teeth, it sort of slithered over the ground with more of a shadowy trail following it than an actual body. He wondered if his idea would work, could shadow defeat shadow? He hoped so as the dark wolf opened its mouth wide, getting ready to devour the two serpents.
