I've just recently gotten into rom-hacking and I checked out a few roms that were hacked and i found them really cool but your first Mario Adventure really blew me away! I didn't think there could be any better till I saw this thread either. Awesome job! One question though. When do you think this hack will be finished? Or is it to early for that kinda question?

It's definitely not too early to ask those kinds of questions, I've been working on the hack well over 16 months now. However I still have a good ways to go before the hack is complete. The most part is doing levels for Mario's side, but I've recently opened up a ton of accessible free code so now I can add just about anything I've ever wanted to add before, so it may be even longer. I'll shoot for the end of this year though.

Edit: Just had to add here that I created yet another new enemy. This enemy cannot be killed, it's called "Thor's Hammer Bros.". When you see the sky flash, watch out! That means he's about to throw hammers down on you!

(I couldn't capture the sky flashing with this and no, for now there is no sound effects)

Yeah, these are some awesome ideas. Only two things I can think of to suggest:

1) In the coin-collecting minigame (where you grab 500 frozen coins), won't it be too easy if you have a fire flower? Maybe you should add some frozen Goombas to make it interesting. (Just hack it so you don't lose a life or have to re-do the level if you die in the bonus game.)

2) Why make the first 2 cards useless? You should go to more rewarding games if they match. That is, if you have 2 cards the same, it chooses from a different set of minigames that tend to give you more bonuses, and if you get all 3 the same you go to one that's practically just giving it away.

1) Actually one of the drawbacks of firestorm is that you're limited to your fireballs since the game uses the player's fireball sprites. So if there are 5 fireballs falling from the sky at once and you try to throw one, you can't. It affects boomerang throwing as well. So it may make the level slightly easier, but not by much.

2) A more complicated bonus stage selection scheme is possible. I could do different bonus stages or make super easy versions of other bonus stages for all matching cards, or maybe double up the prizes. Only problem is that I'd have to create a butt load of bonus stages and I'd rather not have to do remakes of the same stage

That Thor's hammers idea is wicked. Maybe you could also try this with some other things like bullets or boomerangs or fireballs like the other hammer bros. Just a thought.

Ok ok... well...

You guys wanted it and I sort of did it

Now, on the Warp Zone you can switch between Luigi and Mario, thus, you can complete the game as either Mario or Luigi. Right now their respective completeness of their worlds are seperate, but to make things interesting, I could make it so beating World 1 of Luigi's side will open open Worlds 2 and 3 for Mario and Luigi both, making for a HUGE amount of choices in the way you play. When switching between characters, you keep your coins, score, lives and items (though Mario/Luigi only items cannot be used by the other character).

Also, lets say Luigi had Fire Power before switching characters, if you switch to Mario, then back to Luigi, Luigi retains his fire power, hehe.

Edit: Ok it's official. Now you can play as Luigi or Mario by switching them on the World Select screen. Completing on one side will open up paths to both sides. Your inventory items do indeed transfer (buy an item on Mario's side and it shows up in Luigi's box and vice versa). However, you cannot choose each other's items (put a stop to that bwaaahahaha). This makes for even more interesting gaming.






Edit Again: I added actual power-up items of the Ice Flower and Star Feather that you can actually obtain in the level (couldn't do that before) make the game have 8 unique suits you can grab now (Super, Racoon, Fire, Panda, Mouser, Boomerang, Ice/Star). I'm thinking of adding another ability to Ice powers, but not sure what to add.

Hmm...how about a submarine powerup? For the physics in water, you would just have to modify the old Frog Suit code a little. Physics on land could be done by not allowing the character to walk with the Submarine, rather, they have to jump to get around (sort of like the Rush Marine in some Mega Man games). Add in the ability to shoot and...you might have something.

You could also try the Metal Cap - you sink in water, you are immune to fire and perhaps other projectiles, can easily kill enemies, you move slower, and you can't jump as high. It'd probably be a good idea for it to be a Mario-Only thing, though, so Luigi couldn't get stuck in certain places.

I can't think of anything else that is reasonable at the moment.

the cape idea wouldnt work unless the physics were the same as SMW, I really like the metal mario power up taht alows you to be uneffected in water.

How about ice powerup triggers question blocks? I really can't think of any better ideas. As for suits, how about a Pirana plant suit? Dunno what kind of powers it would have, but it could be pipe related.

OMG! Bowzer suit! Yeah, if you press the attack button you fire bowser's flame attack, and if you press up and attack, you fire a laser like you see in his castle. Another idea could be a flame shield, where Mario or Luigi sticks out one of those airship flames out in front of him somehwere near his legs while he rams enemies with a giant flaming....um, flame.

Oh, I know, ice power makes you immune to flames! Actually no, better yet, ice power lets you absorb flames as coins! Imagine on an airship, and you walk into an airship flame. It goes poof, and you get a coin just for touching it.

why not make Ice power increase your speed and give a slippery effect? or allow you to froze yourself to be protected from attack(like tanooki suit)

Well I did another Power-up. This one is Mario-only (leaving only one power-up left to get, thank goodness).

This is the SMB2-style heart shield. Use it, and you get 3 hearts. Getting hit with this will protect you from losing your current power (sorta like Magic Mario's power in MA1, but this applies to any power cept small).

Two powerup suggestions:

A vacuum cleaner (or something like that). When used, it checks if there are any coins, powerups or 1ups on the screen, gives them to the player, and removes them from the level.

A rain cloud which causes the level to be swimable for a few seconds (or non-swimable for swimming levels).

That would be the same effect as Mario wearing a Kuribo's shoe. Makes me angry when I die at the Kuribo's Woods in MA1.

I got one idea for a powerup, used for whichever brother or both. The cannon suit powerup, either they hold a cannon and shoot cannonballs(maybe chargable for big cannonballs) or maybe they just throw the cannonballs like the fireflower and fireballs.

Luigi can get the vanish cap. Go through enemies and various walls, Missile Bills and similar don't chase you, etc.

Pretty sweet. Makes me wish I was good enough to implement these kinds of things in my hacks.

What if there were a powerup that allowed Luigi to conjure objects out of thin air? Maybe it'd be random whether he gets a red shell, green shell, blue block, or what-have-you. That'd be cool.
