Weight – 393 lbs
Mood - Hopeful

Hello, my name is Ellis Meredith-Owen and I am approximately 200 lbs overweight. There I typed it. You’ll never know how hard that was to type. You might see lots of confessions such as that in this mini blog of mine, but I think that one will be the most striking, especially as most of you don’t even weigh the amount I’m overweight by. You see all my life I’ve been involved in various battles, but this one is probably the most crucial – if I don’t win this one it’ll literally be the death of me.
In my darkest days, not so long ago, I’d reckon that most people probably wouldn’t care if I ended it all, least of all myself – but as of right now, I’m fighting back. I’m damned if I’m going to let this ruin my life entirely.
It’s not going to be easy, it’s already proving pretty rough, so bear with me. I suppose the reason I’m making this public is that I’m not hiding it anymore, there’s now no excuses, no escape, and no way back. A relapse into my old ways of gaining comfort from foods that could kill me is no longer an option.
The thing is, the task ahead of me seems pretty daunting, it feels like I’m going to try and break down a wall with a toothpick. If I’m honest with you all, I’m scared. Scared that no matter how hard I try, I’ll remain like this forever – cold, alone and isolated.
But fear is not going to stop me. It can’t stop me. Not this time.
By posting this blog, I suppose I feel that I’m not doing this alone, although ultimately whether I fail or succeed is due to me and my willpower and tenacity.
I enrolled with Weight Watchers yesterday which is how I found out my weight (a number I’ve shied away from finding out for years now), and hopefully by following their points programme, and with decent excercise, I’ll lose the weight I need.

So there’s your intro. Today is the first day of the rest of my life, and I hope by showing this commitment, it’ll be a long and fruitful one.

That's actually very powerful. It's really hard to admit something like that publicly, but I think it's a really important step, seeing as you seem to have really come to terms with it.

I wish you the best of luck, and the best of will. It will be a difficult journey, but if you can make it to the end, you will know that you have accomplished something great.

I'm really proud of you for doing this It's always a lot harder to loose weight when you don't have support behind you, and now you've got it. I'm also really glad that you picked weight watchers. My parents went on it years ago and they lost a lot of weight, and have been able to keep it off. If you really stick to it, I know you'll be able to do it. I've got faith in you

Holy shit dude. Didn't realize it was that high. But now that that's out of the way...

I know how hard this'll be. I'm trying to lose a pretty sizable amount myself (I started at just over 250 lbs. and I want to get down around 180) and I know how hard it can be to stay out of the old traps. You do have the right attitude about it, and Weight Watchers is a great step. My ex did a similar system and lost about 20 pounds before falling off the wagon. And that's the biggest trap you'll probably face. It might help to look at it like an alcoholic in recovery; if you fall off, then just get back on and keep plugging away. It is a long process, but look at it in steps. You've got plenty of support here, just keep that in mind. Good luck with it.

Well, first off, good luck with it

Secondly, you've done the right thing by publically "outing" yourself when it comes to weight -- I did it and it's been a good motivator for me too. As I'm sure I've told you, I've been concentrating on losing weight for a year now, and have lost a bit of weight Part of the motivation has come from having posted that big rant on my blog a while ago too

Thirdly, what are you planning on doing in regards to exercise?

And fourthly, drink lots of water Water is your best friend, trust me

I have to agree with Tarale there. Water is your best friend. Keeps you slim and has no extra calories like pop does. And it's good to see that you plan on doing something healthy to lose the weight Elmo instead of trying to starve yourself or puke all the time.

It also keeps your liver happy. And a happy liver is able to metabolise things more effectively. I don't know if water actively helps your metabolism as such, but not drinking enough water is certainly detrimental to your metabolism.

Water good....... *drinks the last of a big glass before heading home*

It's also good for making your skin all lovely and soft

Weekly Weight Loss - 8lbs (!)

Mood - Buoyant

Well it was my first weigh in and I was nervous, I just wanted to lose SOMETHING after all the effort I've put in to this and was blown away. Over half a stone in a week is beyond all my expectations, that said I'm a realist and know it won't be like that every week. Still. I'm very happy, estatic in fact


So I'm hoping to lose at least 1lb next week, it'l be tough as I'm going on hols with a client on the weekend (Takeaways galore), but I've saved up some 20 extra points to cope with it.

Taryn - To answer your questions, excercise? Well I'm still a bit self conscious about going back to the gym, but I walk half the way to work (1 1/2 miles each way, so that's 3 miles a day), making sure it's a brisk walk. I also play DDR for half hourly stints at least 3 times a week. Ok so it might not be a very vigerous regime but it certainly gets my heart pumping.

Drinks? Black tea and coffee with sweeteners, that or cordial (no sugar).

well, something I've heard (and I'm trying) is that drinking the 8 glasses/cups of water a day helps control weight... and in turn can help you lose weight.

it works in 2 ways, 1) it helps your body function properly because you aren't constantly dehydrated.... and 2) it takes up space in your stomach that would otherwise be full of food (or soda/coffee etc. which has sugar and caffiene which dehydrates more)

just a a suggestion as to something you could try... couldn't hurt really

It's really good that you're doing this.. I wish my dad would do the same thing. He's like 100 pounds overweight and has SERIOUS liver problems. Hopefully you can lose the weight before you gain some serious health problems.

I know you can do it.. anyone can. It's just going to take a lot of willpower and alot of positive thinking. I'd keep away from the soda and coffee if I were you. My dad drinks coffee like crazy... and it's not doing good things for him. The caffiene can also mess up your metabolism.

I'd start exercisizng to. I'm sure you are. But running and swimming are definatly the best to do. They work out everything. I know this lady who lives across the street from me... she jogs like two miles every morning. She's had like four kids and you can't even tell.. she's like skinner than me.. and so healthy.

And of course, it's not for everyone. But I suggest going vegetarian to people who are trying to lose weight. It's really a good way to limit what you can eat. Of course, you don't want to jump on carbs in place of the meat (which happens more than often). But focus on eating lots of fish, vegetables and salads. Lots of water also helps of course. You can also go on a detox diet... which clears alot of fat out of your internal organs.. and helps your kidneys cleanse your blood. Just kind of flushes you out. You should see a nutritionist if you can... they can really help you plan out your meals.

I'm just trying to suggest things that maybe you didn't think of. But it seems like you've started out in a positive way... just keep it up.

Elmo -- watch yourself with the drinks! I'm gonna be a killjoy and tell you to not drink very much cordial. Water, water water! Always drink water in preference to cordial. Have the cordial when you need a little treat though

And yes, 2 litres / 8 glasses a day. More if you're drinking anything caffeinated like tea or coffee. Try to drink the majority of it in the morning, so you're not up all night going to the bathroom

I've tried drinking 64 oz of water in a day like they recommend, and I just can't do it. It's too much water. I end up feeling almost sick, and don't touch the water for the rest of the day.
Another problem I have is that I don't really like water (I know there's no taste, I can't explain it) unless it's really cold. So after about 15 minutes, the water is pretty much a chore to drink.

I need water that always stays cold. Like in Waterboy.

...Anyway, on topic! This is very good Elmo, I know it's hard to do what you're doing. Just keep it up, don't get discouraged if things don't go as quickly as you plan, and keep in mind that every day you get through eating right is another day closer to your goal.
We'll all be excited when that day comes.

Looks great to me. You're working at a good level of intensity for your current fitness level. You get your heart rate up, but you aren't torturing yourself. You're also doing enough exercise to improve your metabolism and physical fitness. One of your workouts has been incorporated into your daily routine, and the other is an activity that you enjoy. This will make it much easier for you to stick with the program.

Weekly Weight Loss - None, a gain of 0.5 lbs

Mood - Dark

To be honest I was expecing a gain. I'd been away all weekend, a VERY strssful one with work, I had no access to any fruit (I'm not kidding there was no opportunity to get any), so I was climbing up the walls basically, but still I didn't reach for the chocolate, I just... well I suppose ate more of the wrong sort of things otherwise I would have had to forgo fod entirely. I tried in vain to make up for it, but it wasn't good enough.

I think I might gain this week too, I've been close to tears trying to work out my points, on the day of the weigh in I lost track and had a Mushroom Stroganoff for tea whilst out, and then tonight my family got me a Chow Mein.

I seem to be seesawing between having meals with very litt;e points (i.e a salad, or a banana) and points rich meals.

My moods have also nosedived and everything seenms so much harder. But I'm not caving in.... not yet.

Yeah, it gets hard. I'm currently broke, so my own diet is a bit all over the place. The foods I have left are all probably not the best... my own weight is see-sawing as a result.

Don't worry too much about the bits that get tricky. It happens from time to time.

Just remember to get back into the swing of things afterwards . It's like learning to ride a bike, if you fall off, just get right back on again and keep trying.

Mood - Happy
Back on track! It's been hard at times, once I skipped a meal because of the effort in working out the points, but my hard work is still paying off. Easter is round the corner though - lots of temptation to come.

Personally, it's been pretty tough, my nosediving mood lead to me quiting the board for the most part (apart from this blog), I was also so down the other night I cried, and without the chemical and emotional rush of choclate to help me ride the storm, well it was difficult. I'm over that now though.
I'm nervous to see what next week will bring....
