Skydude stood atop the temple, waiting. The ancient Aztec pyramid extended far below him into the jungle, cracks showing in its sides but still holding up well in the tropical weather. Vines had nearly completely covered the old structure, the rest of the city swallowed completely by the creeping jungle. Whatever devastation the rainforest was experience, you couldn't see it here. The trees stretched out as far as the eye could see, a few poking their tops through the green terrace, beacons for miles around. The quiet trill of insects filled the humid air, broken occasionally by the roar of a jaguar or another creature. Yes, this forest was brimming with life. Brimming with life, on the edge of this temple. This temple, this temple of death. Death both in its time, from the thousands of sacrifices that occurred just meters from where Sky stood, and death from its lack of use, a decaying symbol of a people long gone. The temple had been magnificent, decorated with jewels and colorful paints. But time had worn away the paint and the jewels had been taken, some for museums and some for money. But the temple itself was still impressive in its majesty, both inside and out, and its place in the jungle was suitable for battle. A bridge between life and death. The Red Wizard stood atop the temple, golden armor shimmering in the sun, as he awaited the arrival of his opponent.

My character, as perhaps you've seen in the SF or in one of the tournament signup threads here, is a magewarrior, think effectively a Red Wizard, which is mostly how he looks, but physically rather stronger.

Evan: "The hell's he doing here...?"

The hulking warrior adjusted his visor-like sunglasses as he pulled his hood tigher around his head. Adorned in a form-fitting leather suit that effectively concealed every inch of his skin, Evan stalked back to the temple where he waited, knowing eventually that either Shen or that man would come back to him. Shen had established this place as their meeting point for whenever she had sensed a Master Emerald shard that she could not herself retrieve. It was then that she called him. Until then, he lay in wait.

Unfortunately, Evan was also very territorial. For fear of someone taking the shards he posessed already, he liked to make darn sure that no man trespassed on the property that he had claimed as his own some months before.

But Sky? Sky was different. Sky had appeared when the situation was most dire. Sky had appeared when the Trinity split. Sky always appeared when you least expected him to.

Evan didn't like the unexpected... He crept up to where Sky was standing, and kept his distance. There was no way he was gonna get in a fight if he didn't have to.

The magewarrior stood on alert on the temple as he waited for someone to accept his challenge. Still, Evan's approach would have gone unnoticed in most settings. The animals, however, who were in his path made it rather clear that he was coming. Rather clear, at least, that something was coming that made them uneasy. They poured forth from the trees along the path he took and put Sky on his guard. That he could only tell at this point there was someone...or something, even, he didn't know...coming from the animals' reactions disturbed him a bit. At this distance he would need to be more alert to catch what was happening. He decided to try a bit of a general call.

Sky: Hello there! Have you come to accept my challenge?

Sky waited for a response, his hand on his sword. He wasn't about to strike before his opponent answered, but then, if his opponent was simply trying to kill him without honor, he would need to be ready for that.

Evan: "Yaah!"

He jumped out of the ruinous cover he had been creeping along, and landed in front of Sky, extending a beefy arm with a ham-sized fist on it towards the "challenger", pointing.

"You can't just challenge anyone around here! I'm the only one that lives around here, so you must have come specifically to see me!"

He drew back a few steps, and considered who Sky was for a moment... He remembered meeting him in the Trinity incident, but that was only briefly, and even then only after one of his compatriots had rescued him and Shen from that small warrior... That person was strong, but Sky? Who knew.

"Either that, or you're just really, really weird, coming to the middle of a deserted Aztec temple and expecting someone completely random to suddenly appear and fight you."

And then the territorialness kicked in again.

"So what're you here for? Come for the Emerald shards, have you? Or maybe you're hoping to steal some of that cursed treasure that's inside all of these temples? I protect both of those just by being here, you know. And whether you're a theif or a weirdo, you're still in my house, and I know that you're definitely not the only other person allowed here."

Sky raised an eyebrow at the large man.

Sky: Erm, actually, I'm neither thief nor weirdo. Well, I suppose the latter might be called into debate. I put an ad out on the world fighter's network issuing a challenge here. I guess no one got it. I came here because I want to hone my skills, fight somewhere interesting without risking the lives of noncombatants. I've fought at this temple in the past, actually. I trust you've heard of Danicess?

The magewarrior stepped closer to Evan.

Sky: So it seems nobody else is showing up. Care to spar?

Evan: "Your myths and legends and regulations and shit like that don't have any pull here... Just me. And I say you can quit using my home as a wrestling ring!"

He clenched his fists in anger... Desecrating such a sacred place, without even taking into account that someone might be LIVING here? It was as bad as those random warriors that decided to have senseless matches in the middle of open fields without even realizing that they might be killing innocent bunnies or other small, ground-dwelling creatures with their earth-shattering moves.

Fortunately for Evan, the Master Emerald's shards pushed all life away from this place naturally, which left him ample opportunity to kick Sky's ass.

((ALL life? What about the trees? ))

Sky: Calm down there, buddy. If you want to fight, I'll fight you. You seem as good a challenger as anyone. But if you're enraged you'll make mistakes and that'd be an easy battle, even if you are strong.

The magewarrior hopped up and back, landing softly on the altar at the top of the temple. He tilted his head to the side a bit and looked quizically at Evan.

Sky: What makes this place "yours" anyway? I couldn't find any records of it being owned by anyone, part of the reason for my setting the fight here. If you want, we could move it elsewhere, but I think this place has a lot of character. Care to go?

Evan: "It's mine 'cause I made it mine, and 'cause there's something here you can't have and nobody else can have, either! I'm warning you... you're messing with forces you can't understand."

That head tilt, the nonchalantness of his voice... Was this man mocking Evan's cause?

Sky shrugged.

Sky: Honestly, you're really taking this far too personally. Just chill out a bit, alright? I'm not here to mess with whatever weird stuff you think is here, I just wanted a good battleground away from civilization.

The magewarrior drew his sword and inspected it. It was a really magnificent blade, relatively lightweight for something as powerful as it was, and ideal for the enchantments Sky often put on it, being attuned to his own spiritual frequency. It wouldn't do much good for someone else to try to use it. The magewarrior wondered a bit about this man in front of him. He seemed like he was strong, but...rather unstable.

Evan: "Tch... Battleground. It's all about fighting with you 'modern' warriors. You've got no respect for the art, and even less respect for the area. Fight, fight, fight, that's all you want to do."

He cracked his knuckles. It was clear that his size was considerably greater than that of Sky's, and like the trademark meatsack, he tried to use this fact against Sky...

"I've already asked you once to get out of my ruins. I've got a damn good reason to be here, and you sure as hell don't. You'd best leave before I make you leave. And I will make you leave."

((*whistles* Err, sorry, didn't really feel like sim-battling or SFing for about a month or so there))

Sky: Hey, I said I would leave peacefully, as I'm pretty respectful for these sorts of things. I have some sentimentality of my own, after all. However...

The magewarrior backflipped such that the altar was between him and the rather large warrior and put his left arm in front of him. The clump of metal on his wrist folded out into a shield, which Sky held in a defensive position, as he brought his sword back in a striking position. He glared at his opponent.

Sky: ...if you're determined to make a battle out of it, I'm not going to make it easy on you.

Evan: "What kind of lame response is that? I'm twice your size, telling you to get the hell off my ruins before I kick your ass."

He walked up to Sky, disregarded the sword and shield he had produced out of nowhere, and grabbed him by the collar, lifting him about a foot and a half off the ground.

"It seems that I need to remind you that you are the one who came here. You're also the one who issued a challenge to some fighter who you were hoping would meet you out here. I don't appreciate rudeness, especially the invasion of one' sprivacy. So how about you get out?"

It was then that one, upon closer observation of Evan's face, would realize that, well, it wsn't visible at all. In fact, it didn't seem like any part of his skin was exposed in any way. His face was obscured either by a thick leather scarf, a large, tightly-bound leather hood, or a pair of gigantic, pitch-black sunglasses that completely covered his eyes. There was no in-between space. Odd, to say the least.

The magewarrior smiled a bit inwardly. Perhaps the guy wasn't all talk after all. Still, no need to go all out before he was certain.

Sky: Well, now I think you've crossed a bit of a line.

At that, Sky swung his legs back, and then to the front to catch Evan in the jaw...or at least where he suspected the jaw probably was below the mass of...stuff...and continued into a backflip as he forced himself from the hulking man's grip, landing a short distance away. In a single motion, as if bouncing from the ground where he landed, he jumped forward with his shield in front of him, charging into Evan and sending out a shockwave which should be able to send even a larger man than him over the rim of the temple and falling down the stairs.

Sky's feet were caught by Evan, who fluidly let go of Sky's collar to grab onto his legs. He held Sky upside down as the smaller man attempted to backflip out of his grip, and knew full well that if Sky were to fire a shockwave at his feet, the end result would probably send his muscular bulk down onto Sky, crushing him beneath Evan's weight. Needless to say, he laughed at Sky's attempt to sucker-punch him.

Evan: "Ah, won't go without a fight, eh? Allow me to help you..."

Evan whirled around, River City Ransom style, in a move that was strangely reminiscient of a battle long past...

...And let go of Sky a few seconds later, pitching him off of the top of the altar and into the wild blue.

((Two things...first, I never said the shockwave was going to be along the ground, think of it, if you need an example, as the Jupiter+Griffin card combination in Castlevania: CotM. Secondly, and much more largely, that's a stupid and downright CHEAP method of fighting. But if you're going to do it, then I see no reason why I shouldn't))

Sky wasn't about to just let this behemoth twirl and toss him, which it quickly became obvious he was trying to do, and it wasn't too hard to cast a small binding spell to the man's legs. When Evan released the magewarrior, shortly afterwards he found himself pulled quite rapidly from the ground on which he stood. Sky, not really want to be bound to the musclehead any longer than necessary, released it and landed, a bit harder than he would have liked, on the temple steps, and watched as Evan crashed into one of the statues on the lower part of the temple. The brute had been a bit quicker than Sky had expected, but the magewarrior knew he wouldn't be pulling any tricks like that again. If indeed Evan lived here, it seemed it was time to send him an eviction notice.

OOC: Bravo! That was quite cinematic. Note to self: Don't change your password in a new window while newreply.php is open!

Evan crashed into the rubble, and punched his fist upward and out of the rocks that had fallen onto his bulk with the vain hope of crushing it under their stone weight. Alas, it was not to be, as he roared like an undead hero, a purplish aura surrounding him. He paused momentarily to gather his thoughts.

The current enemy was this fellow, who had the audacity to intrude upon Evan's hallowed ground. He was a caster, he fought as dirty as Evan did. He was armed, Evan was not. But Evan had "magic", too... The fellow seemed to be unarmored, save for his shield. That sword looked really sharp and magical. Whether or not Evan's leather suit could stand up to it stood to be tested. Evan didn't want to find out.

He gazed at Sky through his black shades, and a small display came up in front of his eyes, in small, focusable print. Sky's apparent physical characteristics were displayed, as well as the makeup of the items he was wearing. Except for that one bag that was at his side, which registered as a huge "????" on Evan's visorglasseses.

Shit. Who knew what was in there?

Not wanting to find out, Evan used his classic method of attack: The basic bumrush. On Sky. With two ham-sized fists of largeness. To his face.

Evan: "You'll pay for your intrusion, with an attitude like..."

And the swing...

"...That!"

((I should note that for moves involving twisting and the like such that my mental imager is challenged, as in this case, I make good use of the Gundam figures I have around. Evan, in this case, was represented by a Marasai))

If Evan's shades registered Sky's clothing correctly, then he would have noted the cuirass below the Red Mage garb worn by the magewarrior, which itself was reinforced, offering what Sky considered to be the best mix between defense and mobility, as the two tended to be tradeoffs even when dealing in magical goods.

If the big guy wanted to charge at him, Sky thought, he'd need to work at it. The magewarrior had a decent distance on his opponent, but keeping a good defense would necessitate not turning his back, necessarily slowing him down. Sky leapt backwards up the temple, putting a bit more force into each step, sending chunks of stone towards Evan, and hopefully breaking up the path a bit and slowing him down.

Nearing the top of the temple, though, Sky realized he was going to have to do something else as Evan continued his charge, and the magewarrior raised his shield as Evan reared back and punched forward.

Right into Sky's sword. Just as the first punch was about to land, the magewarrior dug in, brought his shield back to cover himself closely, and put his sword forward, directly into the path of the approaching fist. Sky doubted he would cleave Evan's arm in two, and he would probably get hit back pretty hard in the process, but could probably deliver one hell of a painful, and hopefully debilitating, cut to his opponent's leading hand in the process.

Evan's fist slammed into Sky's sword, from a side-view standpoint. A few seconds later, a more prominent observer would have seen something rather strange between the two fighters as Evan's fist had stopped a few inches before hitting the hilt of Sky's rapier. His long, outstretched arm lay positioned just above the weapon, as its thin blade slid straight through the slit in between his fingers and down alongside his elbow. He looked quizzically at the precarious positioning, and withdrew his hand. He spread his fingers, and stared at the leather of the glove that covered his left limb. The crook between his middle and ring fingers had been cleanly sliced, and he smirked at his dumb luck. And promptly disappeared.

Or, rather, moved very quickly behind Sky in a short burst of speed as he burst into flames. The heat would probably be more noticeable than his movements, unless Sky had really good eyes (which Evan had yet to rule out). In any case, he wasn't about to be poked by that sword again, so he backflipped further up the stairs of the temple, reaching the altar that Sky had originally positioned himself on, and rubbed his hands together.

EDIT: Rubbed his hands together MALICIOUSLY!, that is.

((That marks the second time this fight you seem to assume that Sky would just stand there while Evan did what he wanted to do, not reacting at all; I'll let it slide again this time, but really, don't do it again, as you're forcing Sky to be very out of character when you do that))

The magewarrior couldn't turn his head and refocus his eyes fast enough to see Evan's entire rush by him, but he saw the beginning of the movement and had turned to face him before the latter could pull off an attack, quickly noticing his opponent having rushed to the altar at the top of the temple. This guy did like frontal assaults, Sky figured, and it would be rude to deny him one.

The wind picked up around the temple, blowing particularly hard towards the upper parts of the structure, as Sky readied his sword and shield, both of which glowed slightly, and prepared to rush up the remaining stairs to the top. The wind was at his back, increasing in intensity, as he bounded the top step and, still quite a ways away from Evan on the rather large apex of the building, sliced into the air with his sword, again and again, while running at the larger fighter.

It would quickly become apparent to Evan at this point that the increase in wind was not natural, as each cut flew into him, not with the intensity of a full on sword slash, but hard enough to hurt and perhaps even to cut some fairly deep gashes, as the now razorlike wind continued to pound into him. Even as he moved the wind seemed most intense around him, as if there were a sphere surrounding him to magnify the effects around his aura. While Sky was still a fair distance from the altar he stopped and jumped backwards, pushing out with his shield to send a forceful wind not sharp like the others, more akin to a battering ram, right into Evan's gut, hoping to knock him back a ways.

The swirling wind served only to feed Evan's flames, as the tough leather that encased his body took the windy shots, suffering only minor cuts and abrasions. A mild glow surrounded the areas in his clothing that had been slashed, mending them back together immediately. It was becoming quite readily apparent that this was no ordinary suit, and that minor cuts and abrasions would have little effect other than to give him a few stinging cuts here and there.

The final strike, however, was a different story. Completely catching Evan off guard (there's quite a difference between cute little sharp cuts and the physical equivalent to being bashed in the chest with a battering ram), the fire around him was blown out entirely, and he was left defenseless. The sheer power of the wind-strike knocked him several feet backwards and sent him tumbling over the altar and careening down the back steps of the ziggurat-like structure's top. He bounced along a few of the steps, cursing his luck beneath his muffling mouth cover the entire way down as he impacted again and again on the neatly-cut stone. Eventually, he was sent into a triple-flip that left him sprawling on the ground, not moving at all.

Except for his left hand, which rose slowly into the air, and snapped its fingers.

It should, by the way, be noted that the glove on this finger had yet to repair itself from its initial contact with Sky's sword.
