I want to edit the pokemon and trainers battle sprites in pokemon red and blue.
I've search everywhere a thousand times but i didn't found anything. I tried to find them by myself but the most close I got was the atack tiles... Are them compressed or something? If so, how can I edit them? Thanks |

Pokemon Red and Blue was notorious for having a graphics compression format that nobody could crack. They used a very uniqie and strange compression that actually draws the graphics in different layers, based on color. If you see the Z80 assembly from the actual routines used for decompressing graphics you will see why nobody has ever figured it out.

D'oh!
then sorry for wasting your time. -.- Anyways it was only a side-proyect... nothing too important. Anyone can close this if they want. |

Originally posted by Shiryu It's alright, everyone makes that mistake. I wish I could figure out how to compress/decompress Pokémon Red/Blue graphics. Would be nice to insert custom pokemon. Ohh, well...maby one day. |

I've been trying to re-engineer the game so that it'd use the same graphics format as gold/silver does. I've just begun (basically, starting to look into how to go about it, information on both formats, etc), but once that's done, it should -probably- make hacking alot easier for Red/Blue.

Stupid question, but why doesn't someone take the Z80 disassembly and attempt to port it to a higher level language? From what I've seen Z80 assembler isn't that much more complex than the type the NES uses, and I've seen it done frequently with NES games. (even done it myself)

Cart, this is the Pokémon Hacking forum. The local average poster's IQ is rather low. Clues are rather... useless.

No one will beleive it without proof anyway ._. and even if you can edit the graphics, behind pictures (you, old man, and Pokemon) are all scaled 2x...so unless you made custom back images that don't look bad when magnifyed (here's a hint: they do no matter what!), there's no point unless you can disable that and use a standard image..
But if you aren't completly full of it, it would be kind of nice to know how you did it. Really, we hate data hoarding here |
