I think it would help alot, very good for those who like to use hard to spell words. (And those who cant spell.)

I don't know how hard a feature that is to code in... wouldn't the system then require an inbuilt dictionary of sorts??

It might be nice, but then again, there are so many normal words that would be caught. Snifit, for example. Maybe there could be a "Spell Check" button to the right of the Preview Reply button.

It doesn't sound like a bad idea to have a feature like this. Yeah, it would be good for hard to spell words, but I also agree that little words would somehow get caught in all that.

Yeah, I remember this coming up awhile back.

I think it was Xk who said "Just open word and spell check it there"

It would be a nice feature though.

Possibly, although I'm not really convinced there is enough of a need.

If you mean an inbuilt dictionary on this server? Not necessarily, at least i wouldn't have to be maintained exclusively on this board's server as there are 3rd party web services that do that work for you and return filtered results.

Yeah. Unless the system allows you to easily add new words commonly used on this board, although that would be a pretty fucking annoying. And I'm sure every other week you're going to be flooded with new requests for new words to be added.

All in all I think the work required to impliment this probably outweighs the need.

That's a stupid answer. The point was supposed to be convenience.

I don't think there's much of a need at all for that feature. The idiots aren't going to use spellcheck and those who don't really need it that often are just going to open up Word or an online dictionary anyways.

More hassle than it's worth, IMO.

If I don't know how to spell a word, and I care if I mispell it (not normally), I just open a new tab and type it into Google. What's really sad is quite often not even Google knows what I trying to spell.
Anyway, I have a list of words that includes just about every nonproper English word, as well as alot of common proper nouns, and alot of tech related terms and acronyms. I used it to write a spellchecker in Perl a while back. So if someone does decide to add this feature, I can give them that list. Its taken from an RPM that adds /usr/share/dict/words (I think that's it) to a Linux system.
As far as adding words to the dictionary, this could be done on a per user basis. Like the spell checker would point out a word it thinks you mispelled and the user could have the option of adding it to their dictionary, and that word can be remembered in their profile, and won't be caught as mispelled again.

No, its a little over a MB, remember it takes 1024 characters just for one KB.

There's an extension for lololol, and Mozilla called spellbound. Just install it and a regional dictionary from here. It underlines misspelled words as you type. Then you can right click and hit check spelling..., and well, I'm sure you know how spell check works.

IE has iespell. Can't say too much about it because I never use IE(, and infact quite loath it, but that's a different issue, maybe neurosis, altogether).

Other browsers prolly have their own spellchecks, just google em.

That's a stupid answer. The point was supposed to be convenience.

It'd be a major inconvinience to have to add several special cases to the spell check for member names -- Rydain, my own name, Hiryuu, Ailure, etc -- and most people don't need it.

Besides, there are already many other spell checker ways.

Er.. I know, I agree with you. I said exactly the same thing in my post, about how it would be extremely annoying getting special case requests every other day. At the end I was just saying that your answer wasn't useful for the situation because the idea was suggested for matters of convenience. As I said in my post there are options, but the gains do not outweigh the cost.

My, my, my.

See, what I typically do is I read over my posts before I post them. Eyes are a better checker than ridiculous extensions that slow down your browser, as they also catch stupid and grammar, not just spelling. And they know context.

Not everyone has perfect spelling though. Grade school when everyone else was doing their spelling work I said "this is stupid" and read science books. Did great in science, but my spelling can be atrocious. Doesn't slow down the browser noticeably either.

I did, most did their normal work, and then punched each other when a VW Bug drove by. Good times good times. Old science books from the 70s though.

Bet they'd have an easier time teaching science if they dipped into some things from advanced physics to perk interest early on. I mean Stranglets, Neutron stars, mysterious Quasars, Hawking radiation, Relativistic length/time contraction, dark matter, singularities, Super string theory and the eleventh dimension, worm holes, gravitational space warping. The universe seems like the plot to the weirdest anime you ever saw.

Punch Buggy!
