I think that Kingdom Hearts really does well in this category, having, several of these: Ice Titan, Sephiroth, Kurt Zisa, and Phantom. There's another secret boss in the Final Mix version of the game as well, making it all the more impressive. And unlike a lot of the bosses in this category, there's no ridiculous overpowered thing you need to do to win. Basically they're just really good skill fights, whereas a lot of the normal game is little more than button mashing (at least on Normal mode).

Hmmm....
Deadbeard from Golden Sun was an awesome non-final secret boss...
Hard as shit to beat, even with the most powerful summons, weapons and Psynergy at your disposal, but when you DO beat him, it's all worthwhile

Yeah, I would go with Culex from Super Mario RPG. Not only does he have over four thousand hit points, but he also has the four crystals with him, each with their own individual statistics and element. This makes five tough enemies attacking you at once, if not twice in a single turn. But I think without those Crystals, Culex would be an easy hidden boss to defeat (and thumbs up at Final Fantasy battle and victory music cameo).

I would also have to say that the secret boss Penance from the Final Fantasy X International version is pretty hard to beat as well, if not, the hardest boss next to the game's Yunalesca ( which is probably the hardest boss in any Final Fantasy game to date. Period :x )

the one that give me the most trouble is BassW in MMBN5 , definitely the hardest boss ever made, and, they make it as a random encounter. it took me week to beat him, but, at least, it gave me forte cross rockman in the DS version

One of my friends beat him and she didnīt think he was really THAT hard.

Iīd vote for Culex. That speech of his is magnificent. Unfortunately, he wasnīt hard to beat. If that was the hardest boss in the game, I can beat Smithy while asleep. I was at lvl. 30 which is maximum and I had the Lazy Shells. He had strong attacks, though. I used the lazy Shell with Mario on the cyrstals and attacks that damaged all. Didnīt want to take any chances with elemental attacks and accidently healing them. Peach had the lazy shell armor.

Omega and Shinryuu were a LOT harder to beat than Culex.

God. Culix, without a doubt. The fact that he, and the crystals, knew nearly every devistating move in the game: unbelievable. I did beat him at LV. 28, though. I wonder if he should be in a Final Fantasy game. If so, I would love FF 24/7.

Favorite would probably be Phi from Sonic Advance 3 after you get all the Chaos Emeralds. Hell, before he even gets powered up he's something else.

But then, that's not an RPG, really.

Hardest I've personally gone against recently would be trying my damndest to kill Yoshitsuna in Makai Kingdom and BARELY doing it with my lead guy at level 1300. I beat the whole thing, finally, in 105 hours.

Having played some more KH2, I can say that the semifinal match in the final tournament cup is a pretty tough battle. No drives, no summons, no allies, and you have to fight Cloud, Leon, Tifa, and Yuffie at the same time.

Well, if you want to count MMORPGs, Absolute Virtue is the hardest beatable boss.

Only way to currently beat him (Read: people are to lazy to figure out the right way) is to trap him inside a wall so he glitches and then just unload everything on him.

Are you guys serious?

Guys, you're forgetting the unforgettable! BONETAIL from Thousand-Year Door! First of all, he's at the VERY bottom of the Pit of 100 Trials, which takes over an hour to get to and you CAN'T save your game the whole time... Then the boss himself has 250 HP and 2 Defense, while the real Final Boss has 150... like, 6 kinds of 8-damage breath-weapons WITH added status effects, a charging-up attack for 20 damage, his occasional claw stomp, AND the power to heal 30 HP WHENEVER he wants. Look, I had like 3 partners left alive, no items, no Star energy, no Flower, and like 5 HP for Mario by the end of that battle-- and Ms. Mowz of all things made the killing blow! Yes, everyone was fully powered-up, but even at Level 3 Ms. Mowz's normal attack is weak as Hell. Thank God for it's ability to penetrate Defense.

Oh yes... I remember, the reason I had her out is because of her ability to heal Mario. That's why I ran out of Flower. God, that was a hard fight! I would've been SO mad if I died, 'cause I would've had to do the WHOLE Pit over again from the beginning.

You get an excellent, rare badge for your victory, though-- I think it was Reverse Package or something like that. It offered permenant Spite status condition, returning half-damage to anyone who ever attacks Mario. It cost too much to put on, but the satisfaction from finally defeating The Pit was a much bigger reward.

...Ah, what a great game.

Omega Weapon - FF VIII
You had to be totally pimped out and needed invincibility to beat him, wich I did.

Seriously guys. KH1 Seph was a pansy. Beating him at level 60 with the kingdom key = Pricekess. Now KH2 on my friend's shitty file at level 48. Much harder

The first time I played Illusion of Gaia, I had major problems with the boss in the bonus dungeon (taken the fact I was younger and out of herbs in this battle), but usually he is not that hard.
I would also go with Shinryuu and Omega from FFV for hardest bosses ever. Especially the second one is a hell of a beast. His "RocketPunch" is a pain in the ass, he is wall-protected and fast as hell. Still need to beat him, but I don't have a save file ready.
You have no 30 second-animation showing a huge meteor falling from the top but everything goes fast enough.

But usually he is a boss in a RPG where the difficulty level strongly varies from the characters' levels and abilities. Beating a boss in a fast-paced shooter can even require more skill, when your hands are full of sweat, while you just realized you used up your last life and continue on it.
As for Final Fantasy bosses, it is really true most of them are not that hard, but finding the tactics is the real thing. I never looked into a FAQ, but Ozma from FF9 currently seems unbeatable for me. Usually there really will be something like the ideal setup of abilities or something (I cannot reach him with weapons and no - I don't want to look into a walkthrough to spoil the fun ).

I'l have to agree about Culex too, even though I didn't find him very hard to beat (more than Smithy, but then he wasn't very hard to beat). And I must concur with Surlent, the bonus boss of Illusion of Gaia is a toughie the first time around.

This reminds me that I superfail regularly against Elidibs in Final Fantasy Tactics. Hardest bonus boss IMO.

I dont know why alot of gamer say than Safer Sephirot is hard!
When i battled him that was so easy! I had no ultimate weapon, low level but with alot of megaelixirs...

The most hard was Dolgare from Tactics Ogre.My level was maxed and he could anyway destroy most of my army with 1 attack or 2.....

(sorry if i have prob with my english ,i usually talk french)

Well, I think most of the time when people proclaim how difficult Sephiroth is, they're talking not about Sephy the final boss in FF7, but rather Sephy the secret boss in Kingdom Hearts of KH2.

If Legion were here, he'd certainly agree that Demogorgon absolutely trumps Melissan in terms of raw difficulty. I don't expect anyone else to have played Throne of Bhaal, so I can't ask for much in terms of a second opinion, but suffice to say I could never even put a dent in Demogorgon's HP, and I'm a fairly skilled player. Main reason is probably that he's immune to Timestop, and most high level strategies revolve around some combination of that spell, Improved Alacrity, and a helluva lot of Meteor Swarms. Throw down a Timestop, and the part-baboon, part-squid, part-whatever will slaughter your mage while the rest of your party is frozen in time. Brilliant.
