Ya know, I didn't really think South Africa was going to be able to come back, but then Adam Stern delivered the Canadian Destroyer and... wait, not THAT Team Canada?

Anyway, am I the only one who's excited about this? Not just for the Stubby Clapp (!) sighting in the Canada/South Africa game, either, but just getting to see some of these players I've heard about. I know that, for one, Daisuke Matsuzaka's been getting LUVIN over at Minor League Ball, mostly for his gyroball. Which I missed because the only game where he started was on at 4 AM, and I had to work early the next day. Don't forget Shunsuke Watanabe, whose super-submarine arm angle makes Chad Bradford look normal. Not just Japan's team, either... a handful of South Korea's players are prospects, and oh yeah, they've also got Byung-Hyun Kim... wait, that's not it, oh, Hee Seop Choi. Kim didn't get tagged too bad, at least in the one game I'd seen. For once.

WTF.

USA is being SMOTE by Canada...I had to turn it off.

Love the title btw, and yeah US lost. Because Canada came with a chip on their shoulders, and team USA acts like they always do nowadays, not giving a shit about the team, making errors on defense, not capitalizing on walks, and basically sucking besides Tek.

Dear Team USA:

If you organized this tournament to be called the best, at least play like you're the best and avoid being outplayed offensively and defensively; also, don't spot teams 8-run leads.

Thanks for the win,
Team Canada

NOTE: We're not in the next round yet. We're obviously in if we beat Mexico or if we lose and only give up no more than two runs. Yes, that means that if we lose to Mexico 1-0, 2-1 or 2-0, the States are OUT on the tiebreak.

No complaints on my part.

Puerto Rico beat Panama.

And we are on a 4 run lead over Netherlands according to ESPN.

Mexico's only up 5-3 on South Africa. Might as well have them get upset, then you'd have Canada (2-0), South Africa + USA (1-1), Mexico (0-2). Canada advances since only one team could finish at 2-1.

Puerto Rico beat the Netherlands 8 to 3.

Haha.

Mexico is up 9-3 on South Africa at the moment, but that doesn't hold my interest at the moment.

South Africa fall down go boom.

Bottom 2nd, US leads 10-0. So we can pencil in the US and Mexico for the second round yes?

Probably...

also, we have a minor leaguer throwing the first no-hitter and "complete game" in the WBC, the netherlands beat panama 10-0 in 7 innings.

In 2009, they should change the tiebreak to be most runs SCORED rather than most runs ALLOWED, which makes no sense at all.

It's asinine how Canada can beat the United States and not get into the next round. Almost as confusing as bubble watches in the NCAA's.

Cuba lost a game by the mercy rule to Puerto Rico. (Score of 12-2)

Even broke Cuba's winning streak

Hah.

Second round, against Dominican Republic.

Even better about that Netherlands/Panama game? No hits, no strikeouts. When's that happened in MLB?

Technically, Colin, if that's the case, then Mexico should be in because they beat Canada. And then the US should be in because they beat Mexico. And then Canada... well, the whole cycle will keep up until Bud Selig's in the fetal position, sucking his thumb.

If there was no tiebreaker, just randomly draw the two teams.

Always works out in Canada's favor in soccer whenever we're forced to roll the dice to see if we advance in a tournament.

US loses 7-3 to south korea. They are just 1-1, but could have been 0-2 if it weren't for the reversed call...

anyways, pretty much every one else is 1-1...

Cuba versus Japan, who would have thought...

Your picks? I think the Cubans have it in them...but I take Japan, because of my bias

Japan over Cuba.

Simply because Cuba beat Puerto Rico in the second round.

Note: Japan is winning 4-1 in the 4th.

I thought it was going to be over after that first inning, really...

6-1 after the fifth and Japan could finish this in 7 innings if they can keep the pressure up... probably not but it seems to be a slow game. What happened, rain delay?

I was pretty off in my prediction. I said to my friend 'Japan over Cuba 6-1'

It was 6-1 at one point so you at least nailed the score in progress.

Fun tournament. I don't think it'll end up being a bad idea at all... if anything, they can script it so that next time the Americans are underdogs and defy the odds.

Yeah, what probably is a more astonishing number, if you think so, is that there were only two major leaguers in the final--both of them played for Japan (Ichiro and Otsuka)
