I am doing a project at school about a dream school that students would attend if the school was provided for them. I did a thread like this at AR but got one good response. (For what I was looking for) I don't need responses like "I wan't bitches and hoe's." I would like something like "Project based, teacher ratio 1:10, and if they should have computers at every desk." Hopefully I get some good responses.

Clean bathrooms, hallways that are at least 10 feet wider than is considered standard for schools of the size that the school will be, good cafeteria system, the ability to wear hats indoors, the ability to have bottles of water in classrooms, a streamlined, challenge-based education system as opposed to a weak, get-as-many-people-to-pass-as-possible-by-lowering-standards-based system, and FUNDING.

Wow. Grey hit the nail on the head*. Except I remember we could have water bottles in our classrooms when I was in High School.

Yeah, we could have water bottles in all of our classrooms too, except in the computer class. You couldn't even chew gum but I did anyway .

If you had computers in every class, would they even allow water?

We used to be able to have soda's and snack's in our room. We don't rotate either like at normal schools. I am just not liking some of the new rules.

My school allows you to eat lunch and breakfast during class, as long as the teacher doesn't care. if they get caught letting kids eat in class, then, nothing happens.

I think having new and updated textbooks, clean halls and bathrooms (even though it is hard to keep a school clean, my mom is a custodian at my high school), longer lunch periods (35 minutes or so instead of 25 like my schoolh has), higher pay for staff so they would stop bitching about low pay and get to teaching.

Aha... a list!

-Clean... everywhere... even the airducts.
-Food in the cafeteria that looks relatively edible
-Teachers that teach... instead of assigning projects every other day, and forcing you to learn things on your own.
-Teachers that help with problems
-Vending machines
-Ability to take any foreign language you want (Japanese )
-Setting high standards, and not passing people who dont deserve it, or work for it. (WTF at No Child Left Behind)
-Many aftershool clubs, all sponsored.
-A good band

Eh, theres probably more... but yeah. School is for those who actually work for their knowledge, instead of for apethetic kids being carried along by underpaid teachers.

-A system wherein students who struggle get extra attention only if they care, and students who excel are given the chances they need to continue being challenged. Seriously, you should be allowed to say you don't care and walk out, but you should also be allowed to say you DO care and be assisted.
-A cafeteria that does not contain the following:
> > Administrative people walking around with microphones, reminding people to show up to the football game
> > Giant speakers with which only crappy music is ever played
> > Custodians who are too busy smoking pot to clean tables, who threaten you with physical harm if you ask them what they're doing
-The ability to create a club about anything you want, even by yourself, and not get in trouble for putting advertisement posters on the walls
-Should not be mandatory after the first three years (elementary school); This time should be oriented towards teaching children that they have to work to achieve their goals. If they remain apathetic afterwards, they should be allowed to leave whenever. Cut down on the slackers, and give the people who do care what they need to succeed.

So, um, that's my dream school. So totally never going to happen...

Don't forget food that TASTES edible. I see people bitching about how no one ever eats the 'healthy' (I don't think anything that repulsive can possibly be good for you) school lunches too often around here. Y'know why no one eats them? Because they're worse than the cooking of my grandmother, the only woman I've ever met who has burned spaghetti and made pancakes that fall apart without touching them (just in case you needed an idea of how bad this comparison was).

Other than that...

- Screw notes. If someone can pass the tests and handle the assignments without taking notes, don't fuck them over by grading their notes. I was getting D's and C's for my entire Biology semester in 10th grade almost entirely because my notes were horribly disorganized and often completely missing. And the exam? I got a perfect score. So yeah, I guess you can understand why I hate notes.

- Laptops for each student (only one is provided, however; being realistic, this is expensive enough a suggestion as is). That way, the student can have all their classwork in one place and easily work on it at any time. Teachers would have to be actively paying attention, however, so as to make sure the students aren't playing games on their computer if they aren't done working.

- GET RID OF THOSE GOD DAMNED STANDARDIZED FUCKING TESTS! Leave it to the teachers to determine what should be taught and therefore what should be tested. Normally, I wouldn't call this a good idea, but see next example...

- Better teachers. Teachers who care more about teaching, who care more about the students, who are far more qualified than most of what we have now, and who pay attention in class like they so often nag others to do.

Well, the perfect school would be not a school at all but a machine that just kinda crams info into your head while you sleep. But I'll try to be a bit more realistic.

-Provide each student with a laptop, or if that's too expensive, some sort of mass storage device that can be used with the computers. If they don't return it in the same physical condition at the end of the semester, they buy it. Settings changed? Who cares, just wipe the HD and load an image onto it when it gets returned. (Cost could be cut here by not providing them to everyone, only those who request them. Some schools actually do this, but you have to be approved, which is pretty difficult.)

-Constant supervision, via cameras or some such. Everyone says bullying is a problem, but nobody ever does anything about it. Cut it off at the source by catching the little things that start it. Honestly, if you're doing stupid little things trying to start a fight, you should be considered the one who started it, regardless of who threw the first punch.

-TEACHERS WHO GIVE A DAMN. See above. Teachers today care about students about as much as they care about the crud under their fridge.

-An educational system that makes a bit more sense. Teach people how to speak their country's language and do basic math, and then let them choose what they want to learn. If they want to just drop out and do manual labour the rest of their life, that's their choice. If they change their mind they can come back later. Basically, stop deciding what we need to and don't need to know, because they're so often wrong. I don't need to know how to calculate the square root of the hypotenuse of a sine wave in my head. It'd be much more helpful for me to be learning Japanese in that time. But guess what?

Inexpensive sports. All of the schools I've gone to have such ridiculous requirements to play sports.

Really good gym equipment. Top tier weights and training equipment.

Well groomed playing field. That's right. Some of us out here like to play rugby and football and don't like to be completely drenched in mud.

Removal of standardized testing. Unfair to too many students in too many ways, ambiguous questioning allows jerks whom exist to be...jerks to write answers like "birds are the morons of the animal world" and still pass the literacy exam.

Allowance to make a more self-guided program. Not enough kids are satisfied with school. Why? Because the programs we have are boring and kids want to focus on something they can enjoy. Let them.

More language classes. That's right, I said it. Latin should be manditory. Then offer at least 2 Romance languages (Spainish, Italian (basically Latin), French, etc.), German, Russian/Ukrainian/Polish, Greek (ancient or modern...ancient, preferrably) and Mandarin/Korean/Japanese.

Better libraries with more controversial titles and titles that can engage those that are willing to read them. The library is a vital resource, allow people to use it as thus. Ever since coming to university and gaining access to one of the largest amounts of Mediaeval and Catholic documents in the world I've pretty muched LIVED in the library.

Free use of printers. Raping students wallets with 50 cents a page is ridiculous. When you have a 20 page assignment, that's really unfair.

Close ties with local museums, et al.

Nice rooms and hallways with good bathroom. Not like trashy bathrooms. Comfortable chairs in classrooms. People that respect each other and don't stair alot. like when I go pass people they respect me if I wasn't their friend.

FIFTY cents? 10 I can understand (ink is expensive ). 20's pushing it... 50 is beyond ridiculous.

Also I like your 'Latin should be mandatory' idea, but it needs work. Find (or create ) a really simple but functional language that makes sense (I hear Esperanto is good) and make it mandatory worldwide. Global language ftw.
