#1:
This will be a bland editor, just doing it's job, and minimal file size. #2: This will be a huge graphical good looking version, it will be a bigger filesize (to what I can manage). But it would look good. Both: Do both of them and let people download what they want. |

Err...?
Make the editor however you like. Too minimal and it will be useless. Too bloated and it will be difficult to use well. |

If #1 means command line and #2 means GUI, take the time to do the GUI, you'll save yourself a lot of headaches.

Provided they both have the same features, I'd go for the minimal version. Programs don't need useless clutter like bitmaps of game characters on each form, or non-standard form colours. Just make sure the user interface is friendly. Very few ROM hacking tools have decent user interfaces. In fact the vast majority of them suck complete and utter ass. I'm actually hard-pressed thinking of a ROM hacking tool with a decent UI (Temporal Flux has a good UI, can't think of many more)

Advance-Map,Text,Mart Has the best UI for that type of hacking.
Lunar Magic is great. Meh... Im trying to think of other good ones... Geting a blank. |

Originally posted by Dan I actually dislike Temporal Flux's interface, everything seems out of the way, like when editing a map and the properties for that map, the map itself, and map tiles are in seperate windows, a single window would actually work better (for me, at least). I like your editors, Dan, everything is where it should be, not enough editors use this style. FF3usME has an interface I like, but it could use a little reorganization, some forms seem kind of cluttered. |

IMO graphics are not really nessesary in the menus and such, but if you build the GUI correctly it should not be much of a filesize diference. My current editors are around 100k. If you are going to go with a GUI you might want to learn how to render the gfx of course from the rom, much cleaner and looks better.

Originally posted by Mega-Dog Rendering the format isn't really hard (I wrote something in QBASIC that loaded one of the many "x" tiles in SMB3 and displayed it, and eventually everything after it TLP-style)... it's making them work together right when you do I'd just say to try and make the interface usable. Like Dan said, many editors have crap interfaces. |

Well, I will make a concept on how I want it to look, then If people Like it, I'll put it into the actual editor, if not, I'll stick to VB's generic grey. And I will put out a few betas to see if people can just pick it up instead of having to ask for help on how to get it to work.

Originally posted by Arthus-cat Why use the Generic Grey, it should be set to the system default so in XP and such it changes. That is what I use. Also I forgot to mention...editors IMO is not how they look but how toey proccess...people want editors with everything implemented. |

Unless you have a very good reason (not "because I like it") for using non-standard Windows colours, I'd stay away from them. They make applications look like complete ass.

Of course, similiar logic can be applied to any editor, but to call it unfriendly would be to imply that they couldn't jump into it like this, and obviously they can. As for the UI, I really haven't seen any other editor look so finely polished as LM does. Granted, there may have been different ways to go about it, and it might not please everyone how it is setup, but it is quite aesthetically well designed and easy enough to get around. |

Originally posted by The Sage Of Time-felinian The basic features are friendly enough (moving objects around), but the more advanced ones aren't. That much is obvious looking at the old SMW forum, with the same topics on how to do stuff coming up again, and again. Some features are also placed in non-obvious places (title screen editor is in the overworld editor for example), or through weird key combinations. You're right about one thing though. There aren't many friendlier editors out there. However, when pretty much all editors have UI problems, that's not saying much. |

Go with #1. Some fancy graphics are nice, but mostly they're a waste of resources. And for the love of God, just use the Windows default colours. It's because of stupid programs that use their own colours that being able to change the defaults becomes completely useless. You try to make light text on a dark background, and it looks alright in most programs, but then you get 3 or 4 that use a hardcoded dark text colour and the default background colour and they become completely unusable. |
