Any level resembling this...

...for example, is pretty stupid and beyond help...

However, people should just use common sense when posting hacks. Example, does your level show creativity? Originality? Does it fit well, do all of the walls/bridges/etc. align properly? Are your palettes not garbled?

We can understand a few small glitches (everyone messes up occasionally), but something that is just garbage shouldn't even be posted... unless, of course, it's meant to be garbage (see the "???" level in SDW, for example)

Note: Read the entire post.

What is a "hacker"? Wikipedia defines it as a skilled computer user. The original defenition of a ROM hacker is someone who "hacks into the game" and edits it. All the tools that exists today makes editing so much easier that it attracts people who wouldn't be skilled enough to figure out how to make the hard work themselves.

Some of these peoples can't even figure out how these programs which makes it a lot easier works.

In other words:
These people can't:
1) "ROM hack", in it's original meaning
2) Use the so-called ROM hacking tools which removes the "hacking" part.
3) Realize that there are help files and/or understand them.

The term "hacker" indicates a certain level of intelligence and the ability to figure stuff out. Should people without any such talents be called ROM hackers? No.

I suggest that we make this forum an anti-newbie forum. (I said newbie, not n00b, meaning people who are new and untrained.) If they figure out how to read the help file, use the program, possibly hex editing (with the tutorials that are already there), they should be allowed to post here.

There won't be some way to check this. It would be a "Post here if you think you're qualified enough. If you're not, your thread will be locked or deleted"-like attitude.

In short: Forbid newbie questions. (Let them learn and evolve themselves. If they can't do that, they're automatically filtered out.) What's left? A forum of people with the ability to figure stuff out themselves, or at least the ability to find already existing tutorials.

If there are people left here after a few months, we have succeded. If not, humanity failed.

I agree. I'm a tolerant guy most of the time, but recently, many people have been pushing my boundries. And it takes a lot to do that. Seriously, those "quirky" palettes or glitch things are not good or funny, even if you think it makes the hack better. It doesn't. Remember, if you do screw up at first, be sure to LISTEN to people when they give you advice, if it was in a polite manner or not.

And that needs to change, with emulators OSS is the norm. With Game editors, everyone goes "Mine mine mine" and keeps it closed. Would be a nice start if the LM source code was released, I can't see any other reason to not open it up for the community unless FuSoYa is embarsed with how it's orginizated. Alot of people would kill for a Mac OS X and Linux binary. :/

Not everyone (all my stuff is open-source, but I used Delphi, so it wasn't useful to many people), but the vast majority yes. And yes, it does need to change. However, it's very deeply ingrained, and the attitude won't disappear over night I'm afraid.

Personally, if I ever get around to releasing new .NET based stuff, I'm gonna release it under something which forces people to open their source if they use any of my code.

Well, we just need a game editor that is open that makes people change their minds just like Gnuboy did.

It would be a godsend of FuSoYa released the code, especially for people who want to make LM combitable editors but oh well. Maybe the code was very sloppy or something, but that's hardly a good excuse...

Some kind of FAQ at The AcmlmWiki would be very nice, although a link to it should be (ironically) kept in a sticky, but if anyone can edit the FAQ it will keep getting updated.

Yes, yes and hell yes!
Why should we waste our time looking at a basic hack that obviously shows the "hacker's" lack of intelligence? Any idiot should otherwise be able to reflect upon themselves as in-need of many improvements.

I completely agree with Smallhacker's views as well. No newbies!

I tire at coming into the SMW hacking forums to see about 10+ "Zomg! liek help me!" threads. I want to see something NEW for once. NEW threads not NEWB threads.

Hmmm, I have a small idea.

Everyone, who has made a good/excellent hack, has a mark under his/her name, for example:
"Patented SMW Hacker"
"I can h4x0r"
"I have hacking skills"

For example.

Sounds like the badge idea at the Starmen.net boards. Though I doubt it would improve quality much, more like being a ego-booster.

Indeed. You all remember what happened last time egos were boosted (or destroyed).

I think it's pretty easy to determine who's an idiot and who's not without a stupid little mark or badge anyway.

Ok rule number two is I'm against because the people who make the hacks that look like garbage turn it into a very good hack and who cares if the people make kinda garbage hack its their hack the way they want to do it.

Personally, I don't like the way the new rules imply that unless you know everything about SMW hacking already, you shouldn't be posting here- that may not have been the intention, but it certainly seems to come off that way.

I still think the larger problem is not the n00bs posting crappy hacks, but others posting stupid, useless, or overly repetitive comments, which is also covered thankfully.

I agree what you said and I think the rules take it too seriously or the people who wrote it, but I have nothing else against those guys.

Well certainly there should be a level seriousness- after all, this isn't one of the craziness forums.

I support the new rules for one reason and one reason only:
Legoman.

I am tired of him posting about the 50 different hacks he has going on. Not only do his hacks look and play like crap, but apparently he is unable to grasp even the simplest concepts of SMW hacking. It's people like him who threw the old forum down the crapper. Let us hope for a brighter future, one where there aren't any n00bish questions, eye-gouging palettes, awful level design, and stupid "OMFG hElp me wit teh exgfx" threads.

Legoman is an example of a hacker who is improving (well,, his grammer isn't, but I mean, at least he has an excuse)... his Dangerous Missio 2 hack does actually look decent, though admittedly I don't know what was up with that "virtual man lost freind" hack...

And a typical legoman thread would be a perfect example of useless posts, with many people jumping in to randomly insult legoman without any actual criticism other than "you suck".

I have to agree, Dangerous Mission 2 does show some promise, but even it can't save his reputation as one of the worst hackers this board has ever seen. Or don't you remember: "This is not the end! This is a you're mission!" But right now, in my opinion, he is second only to golden goomba. Now THAT is an awful hack

But can he improve? Yes. Is he improving? Probably. Only time will tell.

I'm the first to admit this is true, but don't you think that, had he not posted screenshots of his bad-looking hacks in the first place, he wouldn't be insulted? I'm not insulting him, I'm just pointing out that he's one of the many reasons the old forum was trashed.

Well, at least Engrish is funny... :p But I think he deserves a little slack, Finnish is pretty different than English (not even Indo-European!) so I would assume it's hard to switch from one language to another.

Well, yes, but had he not posted screenshots of his bad-looking hacks, he wouldn't have gotten that rare bit of good criticism that probably helped improve him somewhat...

Although I hate to sound antagonistic, I'd have to say I partially agree with Parasyte. Just kick ass and don't put up with n00bish crap and everything should run smoothly. Maybe then I'll actually be able to read this forum without getting a headache.
